President George W. Bush gave a tearful eulogy to his father, President George H.W. Bush, Wednesday at a state funeral for the 41st president of the United States.The younger Bush choked up as he quoted his father's inaugural address from 1989."In his inaugural address, the 41st President of the United States said this: 'We cannot hope to only leave our children a bigger car, a bigger bank account,'" Bush said. "'We must hope to give them a sense of what it means to be a loyal friend, a loving parent. A citizen who leaves who home, his neighborhood and his town a better place than when he found it. What do we want the men and women who work with us to say when we are no longer there? President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President Mike Pence are set to receive the COVID-19 vaccine soon.According to two transition officials familiar with the matter, Biden will receive the vaccine publicly as early as next week. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss it publicly.The White House says Pence and his wife, Karen, will receive the vaccine publicly on Friday at 8 a.m. ETAccording to USA Today, Surgeon General Jerome Adams will also be vaccinated on Friday.Biden said on Tuesday that Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious-disease expert, advised him to get the vaccine “sooner than later.” Biden has said that he wants to keep front-line health care workers and vulnerable people as the top priority as the vaccine is rolled out throughout the country.But he’s also noted the importance of him getting the vaccine publicly to build confidence among Americans to get vaccinated.Biden said, “I don’t want to get ahead of the line, but I want to make sure we demonstrate to the American people that it is safe to take." 1096

Public school districts across the country have been dealing with a teacher shortage. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, administrators had to think outside the box when it came to hiring. "This year, in March, when we all went to distance learning, we pretty much canceled all the recruiting face-to-face events. We already planned and pivoted to going full-steam on virtual events," said Jessica Solano, the Teacher Engagement Leader for Polk County Public Schools in Florida. Solano says her district had been boosting their virtual platform before the pandemic so when it hit, they were ready to switch all of their teacher recruitment to online. What they found surprised them."What is so ironic is we actually had our best year yet by doing such an active push on virtual recruiting. Even our district career fair that we traditionally host every year face to face. The year before we had over 350 people attend, which was fantastic and it definitely hit high numbers, but this year we had 700 people attend," said Solano. Because the teacher career fair became virtual, the district was able to reach a larger pool of candidates. Candidates that normally require lots of travel and marketing to get.At Denver Public Schools, Executive Director of Talent Katie Clymer says recruiting during a pandemic and a teacher shortage was challenging at first. "We have a very targeted teacher shortage. If I can speak bluntly, we’ve got lots of elementary teachers. We do not have Spanish-speaking teachers, so our ELS positions. We do not have math teachers. We do not have enough science teachers and we do not have enough teachers of color who represent our students and family," said Clymer.Going virtual with recruiting also allowed districts to save money on travel costs, as they often have to hop on a place to find the exact teachers they need. "We saw a higher level of candidate engagement because this was the option to engage in a hiring fair. Whereas previously if you have the option to attend in person or virtual, you're more likely to attend in person whereas when virtual is the virtual is the only option, we saw a higher level of candidate engagement and subsequent follow up," said Clymer.Many public school districts also rely on a number of retired teachers to help them throughout the school year. "We often see our retired educators coming back as hourly teachers or substitute teachers. They play a really critical role in continuing to support our students and they're highly sought after by our schools as guest teachers or substitute teachers," said Clymer.This year, though, Denver Public Schools is expecting less retirees will return to the classroom as a majority are considered high risk for contracting COVID-19. Still, the district and Polk County Public Schools report a majority of their teaching positions have been filled for the new school year, largely in part to a boost in virtual recruiting. 2939

RAMONA, Calif. (KGTV) - The young man found shot to death in a Ramona home was identified by his roommate Monday as a resident of Ukraine.San Diego County Sheriff's deputies got a 911 call reporting Sunday at 8 p.m. reporting shots fired near the home on Wood Rock Lane. They found the victim dead inside.Four people live in the home, including Ben Ledbetter. He said the victim, a 20-year-old man, worked for Ledbetter's mobile detailing business for four years. Ledbetter believes he is being targeted and said someone killed his best friend out of anger."He's 100 percent good.  His heart is strong, his will is strong.  His attitude was positive.  You couldn't kill a better person.  He was the best person you could ever know," Ledbetter said.The victim's name is being withheld until his family can be notified.Deputies shut down the area near the home until 1 p.m. Monday to search for evidence. Ledbetter told 10News that detectives took his phone, truck and clothes as part of the investigation.Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact sheriff’s Homicide Detail at 858-974-2321 or 858-565-5200.   1182

Prominent tech investor Steve Jurvetson is denying the misconduct allegations against him.In a lengthy Facebook post, Jurvetson said the reason for his departure from the venture capital firm he co-founded on Monday had nothing to do with "sexual predation" or "workplace harassment.""How does one respond to accusations so serious that being innocent is not a good enough defense?" he wrote. "Let me be clear: no such allegations are true."Jurvetson, 50, was a partner at prominent VC firm Draper Fisher Jurvetson. He is also a board member and investor at Tesla and SpaceX, but as of Monday, he's currently on leave.According to Jurvetson, he left the firm "because of interpersonal dynamics with my partners" and "stress."In October, DFJ said it became aware of "indirect and second-hand allegations" about Jurvetson. The company launched an independent investigation, but it did not provide details on the allegations of misconduct."It is excruciating to learn just how quickly, in one news cycle, people conclude that because I have left DFJ there must be some credence to vicious and wholly false allegations about sexual predation and workplace harassment," wrote Jurvetson.He clarified that the DFJ investigation "began not with a complaint, but with unsubstantiated rumors."Jurvetson's departure comes on the heels of other investor resignations over misconduct allegations. 500 Startups cofounder Dave McClure and Binary Capital cofounder Justin Caldbeck left their respective firms this summer after multiple women came forward with allegations of workplace sexual harassment.
