SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students from around San Diego are using a modern medium to learn and inspire.The Cesar Chavez Service Clubs, which has chapters at 22 local schools, has launched the "Chavistas Podcast."Once a month, they interview a local leader, learning that person's story. They hope it can inspire other kids to reach for the stars."We feel that, as a community of Chavistas, that we can get a good message of community out there," say Ariana Gallegos, the club supervisor.Gallegos has a background in radio broadcasting and uses that to help the kids craft their interviews."It's a beautiful experience that I get to bring the students to a setting that sometimes is hard to be at," says Galleos. "But it allows them to see that if I can do it, you can do it."Students in the club say it's been a fun experience. They hope other kids will listen and learn."When it turnes out good, it's really nice, just feeling like you accomplished something good," says Wilson Elementary 7th Grader Mecklin Montgomery. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The North County Transit District announced plans last week to expand the COASTER rail line to the downtown convention center.The San Diego Pathing Study outlined the plan to bring COASTER service to the convention center. The long-term endeavor would extend service from the Santa Fe Depot to the Convention Center. The plan includes an eventual station at the Convention Center.The study is mapped out in near-, mid-, and long-term projects. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The County of San Diego released a 200-page report on Thursday that examines its handling of the recent Hepatitis A outbreak that infected almost 600 people and caused 20 deaths.The report details the county’s successes and what recommendations it has for the future. County officials have been criticized by some people who believe there was not enough action taken at the time.“The county seems to be more interested in its [own image] rather than solving problems,” prominent homeless advocate Michael McConnell told 10News by phone Thursday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Medical Board of California has filed an accusation and petition to revoke the probation of a Del Mar doctor who is accused of prowling in a former girlfriend’s backyard.10News first broke the story about Dr. Jeffrey Lovin in May after we were given home security video showing a man lurking behind a home. An ex-girlfriend said the man in the video was Dr. Lovin, a radiologist. Lovin was charged with prowling, peeking and violating a restraining order. He pleaded not guilty.At the time, Lovin was already on probation with the Medical Board for other criminal activity. This month, the Board issued an accusation and petition to revoke his probation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in San Diego could be closing as part of an effort to integrate women into the Marines.MCRD has been in San Diego for about 100 years, but it currently does not have facilities specifically for female Marines.According to a Military.com report, Marine Corps officials are looking at other options in order to meet the integration mandate from Congress.One proposal would create a single boot camp that would include the necessary facilities, rather than the current process of dividing recruits between MCRD in San Diego and the boot camp in Parris Island, South Carolina.In response to a possible closure, the San Diego Military Advisory Council said losing the area boot camp would cost the city.SDMAC Executive Director Mark Balmert said, “So 400 recruits a week come through our location here, about 16,000-17,000 a year. Our studies have shown more than 60,000 of their family members make the trip to San Diego to be a part of their recruit graduation.”Marine officials have already told the Pentagon it cannot add women to boot camps without building new facilities. 1139
