SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – As hospitals across San Diego prepare to distribute the COVID-19 vaccine to front line workers, questions have been raised about whether receiving the vaccine will be mandated for healthcare employees.“We will not make the vaccine mandatory. We do not make the normal flu vaccine mandatory. We do, however, require our staff to continue to wear masks throughout the entire flu season if they chose to not get the flu vaccine,” Palomar Health CEO Diane Hansen told ABC10 News. She said that Palomar Health’s policy will be no different with the COVID-19 vaccine.On Monday, ABC10 News spoke to hospital representatives at Sharp Healthcare, Scripps Health and Kaiser Permanente. They echoed Palomar Health's policy in that the COVID-19 vaccine will not be mandated but workers who decline to get it must wear PPE.San Diego employment attorney and legal analyst Dan Eaton told ABC10 News on Monday that hospitals can impose a mandate but so far that hasn't happened. “Employers generally have the legal right to mandate vaccination in the private workplace, subject to accommodations for medical conditions and religious objections, but there is a broader ethical question about whether they ought to mandate vaccination,” he said. He explained that the concern becomes whether mandating a resistant population creates a morale problem. “[The question is] whether, at the end of the day, you're acting in a nurturing fashion toward your employees if you mandate a vaccination that they don't want or they don't trust.”Eaton said it may be that at some point the state or federal legislature steps in in some form or fashion with respect to mandatory vaccination, but that's not the current case. 1718

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Becky Buckingham is a nurse in the intensive care unit at Kaiser in San Diego. She has cared for patients who have tested positive for COVID19. “I would be lying if I didn’t say it's concerning and every nurse is fearful in going into these patients’ rooms,” Buckingham. “I think every nurse is eventually going to be impacted by these patients and have to take care of a patient under investigation, ruling out if they have it or not, or if they are actually positive.”She said nurses have a wide range of emotions when it comes to the current health crisis.“A lot of nurses that are extremely concerned because maybe they’re pregnant or they have babies at home or they take care of their elderly parents,” Buckingham said. “There’s also been nurses that are like, bring it on. I’ll take what I have to take. This is what I’m here for.” The supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) has been something causing concern among health care workers.Kaiser’s nurses’ union, the United Nurses Associations of California, recently sent a letter to the California Hospital Association, encouraging the state’s hospitals to immediately postpone all elective procedures and nonemergency surgeries, show hospital caregivers greater transparency in the status of PPE supplies, and partner with nurses to “get the right equipment in the right hands at the right time.”In response, the California Hospital Association said they support canceling all but essential elective surgeries and agreed to transparency with health care workers regarding PPEs, “especially as [they] know demand is great and supply is short.”Buckingham believes her hospital has enough PPEs for now, but the future is uncertain.“Kaiser has been more transparent this week with how they are obtaining more PPE, so I know that they have gone overseas and obtained more PPE that we will be getting in May. Brothers Zach and Asher Swazey are putting together their own newscasts.Its called “SGN San Diego.” The newscast is filled with good news.“You want to have something that will affect people in a positive way,” says 13-year-old Zach.The brothers are now working on episode two. They say it was a lot of work putting everything together.“It took us 2-3 weeks,” says ten-year-old Asher. “We went through multiple stages of editing. It took a little of time to make the script and film.”The boys say they were inspired to start SGN San Diego after watching actor and filmmaker John Krasinski on Youtube.The boys say their video is getting more views, but their headline is to make people feel good.“When you’re making a YouTube channel, it’s not about how many likes you get or how many subscribers, it’s how it affects people.”The brothers say their parents are also a big help.
