House Democrats overwhelmingly picked Nancy Pelosi to be their nominee for House speaker on Wednesday at a closed-door meeting, bringing the long-time Democratic leader one step closer to reclaiming the gavel when Democrats take control of the House of Representatives in the new year.Pelosi was nominated as speaker by House Democrats by a 203-32 vote, according to attendees in the room. Barbara Lee, who would have been the first African-American woman in Democratic leadership.At 48, Jeffries is relatively young compared to the rest of the caucus and a rising star in the Democratic Party. Winning the position of caucus chair will elevate him further in the party's hierarchy and give him an opportunity to wield more power and influence. With Rep. Jim Clyburn's expected ascent to the majority whip position, Jeffries' win means that two of the top five leadership positions in the Democratic caucus will be held by African-American members.Lee, who is 72, said on Wednesday that she felt there were "institutional barriers" in her way."You feel some disappointment only with the institutional barriers that I recognized that were out there during this campaign. I'm really disappointed in that, knowing this was an uphill battle," she said.Asked if she felt ageism and sexism were at place, Lee said yes. "You heard and saw what took place, so absolutely, I think that is the case," she said."We still have many glass ceilings to break," she added.Speaking to reporters after winning his election, Jeffries said he wanted to thank Lee "for her tremendous service to this nation" and characterized the race very differently: "From the very beginning through the very end, this was a friendly contest of ideas."The elections are currently ongoing at the Capitol and will continue throughout the day.Inside the room where Democrats are voting, Rep. (KGTV) - The daughter of PGA star Phil Mickelson will make her acting debut in a movie partially shot in San Diego.Sophia Mickelson has a featured role in Ruta Madre, a coming of age story about a singer who discovers his family and roots on a road trip through Baja.According to the movie's website, Ruta Madre deals with issues of self-identity in a bi-national region."It reflects the feeling of many Latinos, especially Mexicans, who have emigrated or were born here, but who have not they feel neither from here nor from there,” director and screenwriter Agustín Casta?eda said in a 2016 interview.Mickelson plays "Daisy," the lead character's childhood crush. HUDSON, Ohio — A Hudson woman who hosted a large house party at a rental home in October was convicted in Municipal Court Tuesday for violating state health orders to prevent the spread of coronavirus.The woman was convicted of violations prohibited and criminal damaging, both second-degree misdemeanors, according to court records.On Oct. 10, the woman used a website to rent a home in the 6800 block of Windsor Road in Hudson, according to court records. More than 150 people attended the party, in excess of the number of people allowed by the mass gatherings order that limits groups to no more than 10 people.Attendees caused more than ,500 in damage to the property, according to court records.The Akron Beacon Journal reported that on the night of the party, police were called to the scene and multiple vehicles were towed throughout the night. Hundreds of parishioners gathered at a Pennsylvania church Wednesday to exchange or renew their wedding vows -- some clutching unloaded AR-15 rifles, according to CNN affiliate WFMZ-TV.The event was led by Pastor Hyung Jin Moon at the controversial Sanctuary Church in Newfoundland.Guns were zip-tied at the door and ammunition was not allowed in the church, WFMZ reported.
