SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A driver apparently lost control of his SUV and crash landed on the roof of a University City home early Tuesday morning.The crash happened at around 1:15 a.m. in the 3000 block of Pennant Way, according to San Diego police.Bill Crane told ABC 10News that after he heard a loud crash, he came out of his home and saw the male driver in his yard and the Jeep Cherokee Laredo on top of his next-door neighbor’s house."I was asleep at the time and I heard this crash, and I came out and I looked around and saw a guy kind of wandering near behind me, by what's left of the tree, and he was just kind of stumbling and I couldn't figure out what the hell that was. Because you usually don't think of a car being on someone's roof. So, when I finally figured that out, I went in to get my phone, and came back out and called 911, and he was gone,” Crane said.Crane called 911 to report the crash, and he then called the woman who lives in the house. However, Crane said the woman initially didn’t believe her.Crane added, "I called her twice and she said, 'What, a car on my roof? I'm not going out there, I can't believe that.’ It is pretty unbelievable.”ABC 10News learned the woman was asleep at the time and never heard the crash. She believes the SUV was coming down Pennant Way, somehow veered on a resident’s front lawn and launched onto her garage.A towing service used a crane to remove the Jeep from the roof of the home’s garage.There is no word on how much damage the home sustained, but inspectors said the house was structurally sound despite the wreck.No one was hurt in the crash.As of late Tuesday morning, police have not tracked down the SUV's driver. 1692
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A group of Uber and Lyft drivers hit San Diego roads Friday morning to tell everyone they passed to vote no on Proposition 22.Prop. 22 is a ballot measure that would make rideshare and delivery companies exempt from Assembly Bill 5, a new California law that classifies many "gig economy" workers as employees.AB 5 turns the 2018 state Supreme Court "Dynamex" decision into codified law. It says companies like Uber, Lyft and DoorDash have to classify their drivers as employees and not independent contractors under what's called the "ABC Test" of employment.That gives the drivers access to protections like minimum wage, unemployment insurance, time off and other protections not usually given to independent contractors.Prop. 22 would give the drivers some wage protection and health insurance subsidies, but not as much protection as AB 5."It strips us of all our rights," Lyft and Uber driver Tonje Ettesvoll said of Prop. 22. "We're talking unemployment, we're talking health benefits, we're talking sick days, family leave. If they win Proposition 22, all those things go out the window."Ettesvoll organized the car caravan, which went from the rideshare lot at San Diego International Airport to Lyft's San Diego headquarters on Morena Boulevard. About a dozen cars joined her on the road, decorated with signs and stickers urging people to vote no.At the end of the ride, Ettesvoll and other organizers gave out hand sanitizer and masks to drivers. They say Lyft and Uber don't provide those items, but still expect drivers to clean their cars between each passenger drop-off. Ettesvoll said that's another example of the companies putting profit over people.According to Ballotpedia, a website which tracks elections, Uber, Lyft, DoorDash and Postmates have spent 0 million combined to support Proposition 22, saying if it doesn't pass, they may have to shut down operations in California.Groups against Prop 22, mostly labor unions, have raised just under million.A court battle over the provisions of AB 5 has been going on all summer in San Francisco, with a judge recently granting an injunction to give the companies time to make a plan for compliance.Some drivers told ABC 10News they don't like AB 5 and plan to vote for Prop. 22. They worry the new rules would turn them into full-time employees and they'd lose some of their independence and ability to be their own boss.Ettesvoll and the drivers on Friday hope voters end the debate and force the companies' hands."They have had years to abide by the law," she said. "This isn't something new. That you have to pay your workers a minimum wage isn't new. That you have to have a certain amount of benefits for people isn't anything new. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus is said to have coined the phrase, “The only constant in life is change.” Like it or not, change happens to all of us. We either learn to embrace it or fall victim to it. A San Diego pastor was on the verge of becoming one of those victims and almost lost his church. Instead, he found a unique way to embrace the oncoming change and gave his ministry new life. “When I got here, we probably had 150 members with an average attendance of 175, and every year it was smaller and smaller,” says Pastor Bill Jenkins. Jenkins arrived at United Methodist Church in the heart of San Diego in 1999. The church was already weak and failing. Like many inner-city pastors, Jenkins was facing the inevitable, a dwindling congregation slowly dying off and the prospect of the church closing its doors. But in 2005, Pastor Jenkins had a life-changing idea.“I challenged the church to become a ministry center,” adds Jenkins. “And they said, ‘What is a ministry center,’ and I said, ‘I don’t know.’”What Jenkins and his small congregation would come to learn was rather than attending a one-day a week church on Sunday, the building would serve all those in need seven days a week. It now welcomes refugees, immigrants, and asylum seekers. It serves as a food pantry for the hungry, a clothing donation center, and twice a week it’s a free clinic with medical students from U.C.S.D and Cal State San Marcos. No insurance, no problem, no questions asked. “So, when people now ask me, ‘What is a Ministry Center?’ It’s easy for me to say we are the 7-day-a-week church,” says Jenkins. Pastor Jenkins gave his last sermon in the church in 2011, but the chapel is still home to 12 different congregations sharing the word of God. “Today, we have somewhere between 1200 and 2000 people who come through our doors,” says Jenkins proudly. “So, we flipped the church. We flipped it from being a dead and dying church to becoming an integral part of the community.” The church wasn’t alone in its transformation; Pastor Jenkins and his family went through one as well. To date, over 7500 asylum seekers have come through the doors of the Christ Ministry Center. Two of them are 5-year-old Harry and his mother. “You would have a hard time convincing me that he is not an angel in disguise,” Jenkins says with Harry on his lap. Pastor Jenkins and his wife were so taken with this little boy they decided to adopt him. Now along with Harry’s mother, they co-parent. Pastor Jenkins may have retired from preaching, and his church may have closed its doors, but embracing change and having a love for all people will always be his legacy in the eyes of his God. “He said, ‘If you welcome the strangers, I will welcome you into heaven,’” says Jenkins. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 7-year-old child was struck by a car while looking at Christmas lights in Ocean Beach Monday night. According to police, the incident happened around 6:30 on the 4700 block of Newport Avenue. Police say the family was looking at Christmas lights when the child didn’t see a car coming, walked out into the street and was struck by a car. The young boy was taken to the hospital with a broken leg. Police say the driver remained at the scene. Alcohol isn’t believed to be a factor. 511
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City leaders say they're making strides in overhauling its water department after a disastrous 2018. In a presentation to the Audit Committee Wednesday, city public utilities managers said they had implemented about a dozen reforms after a series of missteps last year. In 2018, thousands of San Diegans received erroneous water bills, which an audit largely blamed on human error. A later audit found that some meter box and lid replacement workers were fudging time cards amid a 22,000 unit backlog. RELATED: New round of complaints on high water bills"We needed to change the culture and make sure that all these issues were addressed," said Johnnie Perkins, San Diego's deputy chief operating officer. Perkins said the Public Utilities Department has implemented new, efficient work strategies. These include getting workers out to the field faster, overhauling how customer service representatives interact with residents, and using software to pick routes that make sense. Previously, for example, workers could be sent to do water meter work in Rancho Bernardo only to be sent to San Ysidro.
