LANZHOU/BEICHUAN, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- After living through major tragedies, such as the Wenchuan Earthquake that claimed over 68,000 lives and the Zhouqu mudslides that left 1,400 dead, the new semester starting Wednesday may bring a much-needed sense of normality to the affected students.Senior high schoolers of the mudslides-hit Zhouqu County, northwest China's Gansu Province, began a new semester on a usual date, Sept. 1, which is the first day of school in many parts of China, but at a place 400 km south of Zhouqu, the provincial capital of Lanzhou.After the county was hit by massive mudslides on Aug. 8, two primary schools were damaged and high schools are now being used by these pupils. So high schoolers, altogether more than 3,000, were transferred to four schools in Lanzhou and Dingxi City."The new dormitory has everything -- bed sheets, tooth brushes, slippers, toilet paper, you name it", said Wang Wentian, whose house was destroyed. Fortunately, her family was not at home when the mudslides struck.Another student, Guo Xiangban, lost several loved ones in the mudslides. "I still feel sad when I am alone. But the past is the past and I have to move on with my life," said Guo.On the same day, students of the newly-built Beichuan High School, where over 1,000 students were killed after two school buildings collapsed during the Wenchuan earthquake on May 12, 2008, also started their new semester."I have never been in a school so beautiful. There is even a bathroom in our dorm," said Qiao Qi, a senior high student at Beichuan.The new school, covering an area of 15 hectares, can accommodate 5,200 students. Before the school was built, students, like nomads, had studied during the past two years in tents, then makeshift classrooms.Sitting in a wheelchair, Guo Dongmei looked at the bustling sports field where her schoolmates could not wait to try out the new sports equipment, such as the parallel bars.

SHIJIAZHUANG, Sept.10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Friday, the nation's Teachers' Day, called on teachers to dedicate themselves to rural education, improving teaching standards and contributing to the modernization of the country's education program.Wen made those remarks during a visit to a middle school in Xinglong County of north China's Hebei Province, which is about 135 km from Beijing.Teachers play a key role in primary education, which lays the foundation for a country's development, Wen said, adding that Chinese teachers had made contributions to the country's education cause and modernization drive through hard work and selfless devotion.Wen stressed it was important to improve rural education as it is a matter concerning the long-term development of rural areas and the improvement of people's skills.Persistent efforts would be made to ensure students in rural areas have universal access to schooling and modern education, he said.In 2007, China decided to waive tuition fees for students training to become teachers at six top teaching universities in Beijing, Shanghai, Changchun, Wuhan, Xi'an and Chongqing.To be eligible for free tuition, the student must agree to work at a primary or middle school for at least ten years after graduation and spend the first two years in a rural school.The first group of students who enrolled under the tuition-free program are scheduled to graduate next summer.Eight students from the Beijing Normal University who are in the program joined Wen in his visit to the rural school Friday.Wen urged the students from the university to develop a better understanding of China's rural area, contribute to rural education and help build their hometowns into better places after graduation.The premier asked them to make rural education their career and prepare themselves for hardships and challenges.He said the government would continue its support to the program of tuition-free education for normal school teachers and provide them with opportunities of receiving further education and grant favorable policies in employment.

ROME, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- China and Italy enjoy a good foundation for cooperation and China would like to expand that to other areas such as trade and investment, environment and culture, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here Thursday. BEIJING, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- China launched an association on Monday to evaluate the quality of the nation's higher education."The association, as a non-government organization, is designed to evaluate and supervise the quality of higher education," said Lin Huiqing, an official with the Ministry of Education, at the launching ceremony held in Beijing.The association is composed of over 200 educational institutions as members, including the Higher Education Evaluation Center of the Ministry of Education, Shanghai Educational Evaluation Institute, Peking University, Beijing Normal University, and others.China's higher education has been blamed for a decline in quality since 1999 when the government started to expand college enrollment."Therefore, we should establish a nation-wide network to evaluate the teaching methods, development of each discipline and curriculum designs of each school," Lin said.According to Ji Ping, a senior official in charge of the evaluation of educational quality with the Ministry of Education, China started to implement higher education quality evaluations in the 1980s, and decided to carry out evaluation once every five years since 2003."It is time for us to start a new round of higher education evaluations," Ji said, noting that the priority of China's higher education is to improve its quality."We have required the local schools to make regular evaluations themselves, and invite experts to carry out independent assessments," Ji said.
