Kiley Winkelhake has been living with anxiety since she can remember."I would go to daycare, and they would have to rip me off my mom because of my separation anxiety. I would cry every day; I was in hysterics," Winkelhake recalls.At the age of 7, she started seeing a psychiatrist and was put on her first medication. By the time she was 12, she was diagnosed with depression and tried just about every legal medication for kids. "I got super depressed and really hopeless," Winkelhake says. "I didn't think I was going to make it to graduate at all. I was so sad, and I was pushing everyone away. I was really not healthy... at all."She felt like she was drowning. She says the voices around her were muffled, and mundane tasks like getting out of bed were suddenly very scary. Winkelhake had become suicidal. "I just felt like I was a burden to everyone, and I think a lot of the time when you're depressed and when you die by suicide, you're thinking you will make the people that love you be in less pain, and so when I was suicidal, I just was like 'Well, I think it will make my parent's life easier, and my friend's life easier if I just... died,'" she says. Through the help of friends, she connected with therapy, and with art as her outlet, Winkelhake made it to graduation. She says she's feeling much better today."I'm 20 now, and I never really thought I would be 20," she says. But I'm alive, and it's kind of amazing, I guess."She knows anxiety and depression will forever be a part of her, and learning how to live with it is her current mission."It's not about getting rid of the pain or the illness. It's about learning how to control it, and not let it control you anymore," Winkelhake says.We often hear about those who have taken their life, but health professionals say a majority of people struggling with mental health issues are able to find happiness again."If there's any way that what I can say can impact someone and keep them alive, or help them get help, then I want to be able to do that," Winkelhake says."What we know is that suicide is preventable. If people get access to resources, the crises in their life that are leading them to be suicidal, often pass," Julie Cerel, with American Association of Suicidology, said says.National organizations like American Association of Suicidology and Sources of Strength say it's important to pay attention to people like Kiley because she's living proof that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. "We can wrestle with mental illness. We can wrestle with really difficult things in our lives and get through that, and still really live a healthy life," Sources of Strength Executive Director Scott LoMurray says.Sources of Strength is a program aimed at empowering teenagers and young adults to seek connections and healthy behavior. The organization offers support for young people dealing with depression and anxiety. But what makes it unique from other organizations is its upstream approach to prevent students from feeling suicidal in the first place."We spend a lot more of our time actually focusing on strength, focusing on resiliency, focusing on recovery, focusing on health and help and what those things look like," LoMurray says.One strategy is teaching students about coping mechanisms. Sources of strength calls it "protective" factors, which includes family support, positive friends, mentors, healthy activities, generosity, spirituality, medical access, and mental health."That might be listening to music, that might be talking to a friend, that might be a mindfulness practice or a gratitude practice where every night you write down three things you're grateful for. Those things actually have really profound impacts on our brain," LoMurray explains.LoMurray says volunteering and healthy exercise can also put somebody in a better head space, giving them a sense of purpose and worth. But in the end, there isn't one answer to solving mental health. It's a complicated issue, which is why both LoMurray and Kiley are thankful for -- what they say has been -- a recent culture change around the topic."I've definitely seen a shift in people talking about mental health more, and embracing taking care of yourself and not being as judgmental on taking medication," Winkelhake says."The reality is, being very clear and direct with someone and saying, 'I'm really worried about you... that you might be thinking about suicide,' is actually a relief for people who are thinking about suicide. If someone is that desperate, it's likely suicide is already on their mind," Cerel says.Winkelhake says she appreciates the conversation because she knows she's not alone. "I think it's cool to see people that are alive living with this illness because we talk so much about the people that pass away from the illness, but we don't talk about the people that are living with it and learning how to live with it," she said.She says it's helpful to know everyone is more accepting of the illness. Winkelhake now lives her life using art as her solace and finding a reason to be happy one day at a time."I just hope that I can live in an honest way that brings happiness to me and the people around me," Winkelhake says. In states where it is legal, dispensaries are the go-to location for marijuana products. But now, more customers are using a marijuana home delivery service. Marijuana delivery is a growing business in California, with a company called Eaze dominating the marketplace. Its web page connects customers to dispensaries. Customers can choose from a variety of products, including flower, vape pens, body creams and more. Then, it gets delivered straight to the customer’s door. "A lot of times it gets there faster than a pizza," says Sheena Shiravis, Eaze’s director of consumer communications. Eaze's website looks like a typical online store. "You add things to your cart just like you would on Amazon,” Shiravi explains. “Anything like that. You check out, and then you get an ETA with when your driver is going to arrive." Eaze's software uses an algorithm to help dispensaries and drivers anticipate what customers will buy throughout a day. The product and drivers are tracked by GPS for security and safety. "There's little things like alerts that the driver has been sitting still or idle for 15 minutes, the dispatcher can instruct the retailer and will get an alert so they can call the driver,” Shiravi says. Delivery drivers must have clean driving records. They also have a host of safety procedures to follow. "The cars are not branded. The drivers don't wear cannabis clothing,” says Elissa Hambrecht, CEO of Fume, a dispensary. “There's nothing that says Eaze.com on it. It's literally a soccer mom car." There is some controversy in California and other states that are considering marijuana delivery. Some worry this will make increase crime. "We've seen shootings; we've seen homicides,” says Sgt. Scott Pendleton with the Colorado Police Department in Aurora. “A great deal of violent crime that surrounds marijuana." Sgt. Pendleton, who is a narcotics officer, worries about customers and drivers being sitting ducks for robbers. States that have a marijuana home delivery service include California, New York, Florida, Maine and Oregon. Other states are considering allowing the service, including Colorado and Washington. "You don't know what's going to take place, where there is going to be a rip off that's set up,” Sg. Pendleton says. It's hard to measure whether marijuana delivery has impacted crime where delivery is legal. However, Shiravi believes it’s helped cut down on black market sales. "Delivery helps eliminate the black market, because you are providing a legal channel for access," Shiravi says. In the heart of Silicon Valley, people are keeping a pulse on a new product, as techies transition to foodiesAt Vina Enoteca, a restaurant located a few blocks from Stanford University, staff serve up new plant-based proteins.“We had a spike on the pizza with Impossible Meat,” says owner Rocco Scordella.Scordella put products created by the company Impossible Foods on his menu a few years ago. Now, they account for 20 percent of his pizza sales.“I think it’s as close as it can get,” Scordella says. “That’s why I think when a lot of meat eaters taste it they’re like, ‘Oh, wow. This is close to real meat.'"That’s the idea behind Impossible Foods, one of the top plant-based protein companies in the country. The company gave us an all-access inside look at their lab, showing us the science of turning plants into meaty-tasting patties.“The Impossible Burger is made of actually just four really simple categories of ingredients,” Laura Kliman, Impossible Foods senior flavor scientist, says. “We have proteins, our nutrients which generate flavor; we have our binders and we have fat.” They also use the blood red liquid hemoglobin.“Heme is what makes meat taste like meat,” Kliman explains. “It’s an iron containing molecule that is found in every living plant and animal and is essential for life.”This food tech startup was founded by a Stanford University biochemistry professor and a team of scientists back in 2011. After studying meat at the molecular level, they launched Impossible Burger 2.0 in 2014 and the sales have skyrocketed“Since then, we have grown from about 5,000 restaurants in January 2019 to now more than 9,000 restaurants that are serving the Impossible Burger,” Rachel Konrad, Impossible Foods chief communications officer.Those restaurants include some of the biggest fast food franchises in the world.“Just in the past six weeks, you’ve seen Burger King and Little Caesars jump on this trend,” Konrad says. “They’re both rolling out the Impossible Burger and the Impossible Sausage."Impossible Foods hopes to increase that demand by launching in grocery stores later this year.With a starting price point on par with grassfed beef and going down from there.“If we want to make a product that is affordable for many, we need to be using ingredients that are really part of the food chain now,” says David Lipman, Impossible Foods chief science officer.Lipman claims his team’s plant-based foods are better for your health and the environment.“Animal-based agriculture has been possibly the most damaging thing we are doing to the planet,” he says. “We can get the ingredients we need just from the earth at a 20th the amount of space and land, much lower water usage. So, we want to cut out that middle man and make the use of animals and agriculture no longer needed.”Cattle rancher Joe Morris, however, disagrees with those claims. “First of all, they haven’t been around really to understand if that’s true or not,” he says. “Whereas actually beef has been around since people have been people.”Morris’ family’s business T.O. Cattle Company is one of California’s oldest beef companies, dating back to the Gold Rush era. He believes in tradition over technology.“The people that are doing plant-based proteins are doing it with good intentions,” he says. “But there’s a failure to understand the ecology of just ecology and they really don’t know much about agriculture.”Instead, Morris says whatever damage caused by animal agriculture has to be healed by holistic animal agriculture.“The animals are incredible creatures and they do amazing work," he says. "And the results of their work is biodiversity beauty water in the ground. The plant-based proteins, there’s no romance, there’s no beauty there.”When it comes to customers, however, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. “It’s good,” says a man who bought an Impossible Burger from Burger King. “I could hardly tell it wasn’t a regular beef patty.”This customer also tells us that he added bacon to his plant-based protein patty. 4039

  

It’s a morning routine unlike any other.With every inhale and exhale Brother Sage starts feeling the flow.Once this spiritual healer centers his chi, he then decides to drink his own pee.“So, this is the water of life,” Brother Sage said while holding a bottle of his urine. “Some people know it as the water of auspiciousness.”Brother Sage is a believer in urine therapy and has practiced this technique for decades, using urine to wash his eyes, clean his feet and clear out his sinuses.He calls urine therapy a cleansing for the mind, body and spirit. Now he’s sharing this ideology with others.About once a week at the Boulder Public Library the Urine Therapy Group of Colorado meets up, with members discussing how drinking their pee has cured them from all sorts of ailments.“It is beneficial in any situation,” said Indira Bhatt Gupta. “If you have stomachache, drink that — it goes away. So many benefits.” For some, the benefits aren't just physical, they’re mental, too.“I feel like it cured my depression,” Dylan Flora said.When asked how long it took to feel the change, Flora replied, “instantly.”Urine therapy has been practiced in ancient Eastern cultures for thousands of years and now Western doctors are trying to clear up any misconceptions about believed medicinal benefits from ingesting urine.“It is entirely possible to get chlamydia or gonorrhea of the mouth from drinking someone’s urine if they have those diseases,” said Dr. James Wilk of UCHealth in Colorado.Wilk claims drinking urine can be dangerous, saying pee belongs in a toilet and not in your mouth.“Actual scientific studies failed to show any kind of benefit,” Wilk said. “There’s nothing, except for exercise, that is a panacea that works for so many diseases.”Brother Sage, however, is questioning modern science. “If you have a bee sting, a wasp sting, you stepped on something that's going to start bleeding," he said, "(urine) switches the pH to alkaline so the body starts to heal faster." 1995
