(KGTV) — A local man is hoping for answers after his mother was found murdered during a girl's trip to Turks and Caicos.Marie Kuhnla, 62, set off on the trip to a Club Med resort with her two friends and fellow public defenders in New York.Rick Kuhnla Jr. told 10news his mother was excited about the trip and recalls pestering his her to take her sunscreen because she got sunburn on a previous trip.Her friends say a few days into their trip on October 14, Marie went to her room to take nap and wasn't heard from again.Her body was discovered in bushes on the edge of the resort days later. Seniors are among the fastest-growing population of new cannabis users. However, the stigma behind cannabis could be keeping some seniors from getting much-needed relief from chronic pain, as well as sleepless nights.Greg Saweikis is one senior finding relief through cannabis. Since he was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in 2017, he’s undergone rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. But after a suggestion from a friend, Saweikis started taking cannabis, too.He takes CBD and THC pills by Stratos. He even uses a cannabis cream for his hands. “It seems like it really has been helping,” Saweikis says. “I sleep a little bit better.” But Saweikis knows not all people his age and older are open to using cannabis. “I think there is a large stigma, still,” he says. “And it's just a holdover from the 60s and the whole, you know, from demonstrations and all of that kind of thing.” Since the 1930s you've been told there's something really bad about cannabis that's always going to be there in the back of your head. Leland Rucker is editor of Sensi, a magazine for adults with a cannabis emphasis. He says the stigma is still attached. “And I talked to one woman who it really helped her start to sleep. She's all of a sudden sleeping much better, but she was embarrassed about,” Rucker recalls. “She was embarrassed to talk to people about it, because she had been so cannabis negative all of her life.”But Rucker says more older Americans are exploring, encouraged in part by their children and grandchildren. “And so, you have to find out what the reality is,” Rucker says. “And I think that now that it's legal, we've given people that opportunity.” 1725

Small business owners are concerned that a federal loan program, the Economic Injury Disaster Loan, is providing too little money – too late. The delay, and the diminished funding, are leaving some business owners with questions, concerns and a fear that they’ll have to shut their doors.One of those businesses is GoPegasus, a transportation company based in Orlando, Florida. It’s been months since any of its dozens of buses have even moved, even though business should be booming right now.“There are days that it's really tough to wake up in the morning, I'm gonna tell you I... But you have to do it like us, 26 years. It's a life,” said Claudia Menezes, the vice president of GoPegasus said.And even though their business has stopped - Menezes said they’ve seen more than million in cancellations so far - their bills haven’t. Things like employees, bus maintenance and insurance all still have to be paid. Which is why Menezes said GoPegasus applied for an EIDL loan in the first place. In the 26 years GoPegasus has been in business, Menezes said they have received two such loans before, one immediately following September 11, 2001, and another after Hurricane Irma.The EIDL is a low-interest loan, separate from the Paycheck Protection Program, that the federal Small Business Administration awards after a disaster. EIDL funds can be paid back to the government over decades.The coronavirus pandemic means any business owner with 500 employees or fewer can apply for one of these loans.Menezes said that when they applied for a loan in March, the maximum cap was million, and the company was approved for a 0,000 loan, but before they got the money, the loan program was capped.In May, the SBA capped all EIDL loans at 0,000. An SBA representative said that decision was made “in order to help as many small businesses and nonprofit organizations as possible. We're really running out of resources,” said Menezes.Kelly West and her family have a similar story. This is the first time her family’s company, Skydive Greene County, applied for a federal EIDL loan and she described the experience as “horrific.”“I might sound a little dramatic, but it's been an emotional roller coaster,” said West.She’s the operations manager for the company and said she originally filed a loan application in March. She said she needed to fix an error on that original application, but after she did, the nearly 60-year-old family business’ loan was only partially funded. She said she’s appealed, written to federal representatives and even got a senator involved but now she’s waiting – with no idea if or when she’ll learn moreTalking about small business owners and the importance of funding EIDL loans, West said that, “these are people, not just their income, but these are our dreams, our hopes, our dreams, our life’s work.”Menezes and West are not alone. In a July 1 meeting of the U.S. House of Representatives’ Small Business Committee, representatives from both sides of the aisle shared similar small business stories from each of their districts with James Rivera, an Associate Administrator for the Office of Disaster Assistance in the U.S. Small Business Administration. Most of the stories told by the representatives had similar themes – not enough money and not enough information.In reference to the 0,000 cap, Rep. While some representatives questioned how long that time frame was, Rivera said loans that are applied for now – after a new application portal was rolled out in June – have an even shorter turnaround time.A representative of the SBA said in an email that, “following the passage of the CARES Act, SBA created and implemented an entirely new online EIDL application portal and distribution system…This system has now handled more than eight million applications, allowing the SBA to distribute funds to those small businesses in less than two days.”Rivera also said in Congress that there’s a huge demand for funds – bigger than ever before, and that the SBA has awarded 6.8 million business about 7 billion, and still has about 0 billion left to award.Both Menezes and West said that if they knew back in March what they would have to go through – and are still going through -- they likely would have tried to get loan help elsewhere.“It's a one thing to have a yes or no answer and to know right away. So we could have made alternative plans to get different financing if we needed it,” said West. “But then when you're promised something and then it doesn't come through, and then you're promised by somebody else and it doesn't come with them, now what is three or four different times. You feel like you’re just beat up.”Menezes echoed that sentiment, and also said after 26 years in business, she doesn’t know if her company will make it through this one.“It is like it makes the situation even worse because you don't know what you do, what you can do, what to do. Some first responders worry if current COVID-19 hospitalization numbers do not start falling, the general population looking for care might get turned away.Bed space in intensive care units is not available in several major metropolitan areas around the country, as more COVID-19 patients come in.Last week, 224 ICU beds in the Albuquerque, New Mexico were reported as occupied despite the availability of only 192 within hospitals that reported data to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.According to data from HHS, 1 in 3 Americans is living in an area where hospitals have less than 15 percent of available intensive care beds, and 1 in 10 Americans are in an area with less than 5 percent capacity.“It’s scary,” said Maria Pais, an RN Supervisor at University of New Mexico Health. “We’re scared.”Since March, Pais has been helping the hospital convert areas into ICU chambers so it can handle the influx of patients.“Social distance so we can get through this and so we can have the beds we need in this hospital to care for you and your family,” she said.“It takes a toll on everybody, because daily, as we come into work, we never know what we’re going to be doing,” added Patrick Baker, director of the hospital’s Rapid Response Team.“I don’t envy the providers who have to sit there and make the plans for if and when we have to determine who gets care and who doesn’t,” he said.Baker says surgery units have been converted into ICUs as UNMH has reached a point where emergency rooms are now seeing effects as well.“It’s not just affecting COVID patients,” said Baker. “COVID patients coming in is a big deal, but how would you feel if you had to go to the emergency room because you got in a car accident and you weren’t able to be seen?”And the issue is not just affecting people coming into these hospitals but the men and women tasked with keeping them running.“Staff to take care of the patients in the beds is more likely the limiting resource that we have,” said Barclay Berdan, CEO of Texas Health Resources, which oversees the Dallas-Fort Worth area. According to the newest numbers from the Department of Health and Human Services, 93 percent of ICU beds are occupied in the Dallas region, straining the limited number of nurses, doctors, and pharmacists who tend to them.Berdan says it means the need for more trained staff as well as the possibility of transferring patients to hospitals that might have more room, but might be out of the patient’s network.“Wear a mask, wash your hands frequently, stay out of crowds,” he said.It has led these first responders to repeat what we have heard so many times before in an effort to avoid a situation that is worse than the one we are currently in.“There’s a real possibility that you show up somewhere to get care if you get in that car accident, and they say, 'Sorry, we can’t help you,'” said Baker. 2890
Starbucks announced in a press release Tuesday that it will close 8,000 company-owned stores in the United States on May 29 in order to provide its staff with mandatory racial-bias education.The stores will be closed during afternoon hours that day. At that time, employees will be required to attend a training session that will address "implicit bias, promote conscious inclusion, prevent discrimination and ensure everyone inside a Starbucks store feels safe and welcome."The press release states that the program will be developed with "national and local experts on confronting racial bias," along with NAACP officials and former Attorney General Eric Holder.The announcement comes just days after two black men were arrested at a Philadelphia Starbucks. The police were called because the men chose not to order anything.
