Interim security clearances for White House aides, including Jared Kushner, were downgraded last week after chief of staff John Kelly stipulated new changes to how officials access the nation's secrets, according to sources familiar with the matter.Aides who previously operated on "top secret" interim clearances saw their access changed to "secret," a classification for less sensitive material.In a February 16 memo, Kelly stated that White House officials who have been operating on interim clearances since last June would have their temporary clearances discontinued.That included Kushner, the President's son-in-law and senior adviser. It’s harvest time for the wine industry on California’s Central Coast.At Wolff Vineyards in Edna Valley, owner Jean-Pierre Wolff is dealing with all kinds of issues.“Today in my vineyard, it’s over 100 degrees,” he said. “The impacts of the fires and the smoke taint really add another level of challenge.”These environmental challenges are now costing Wolff financially. Some customers canceled their orders because of concerns about nearby wildfires impacting his grapes.“Negative effects can manifest themselves later on after fermentation and during barrel aging,” Wolff said. “So, they basically backed out of agreements.”Millions of acres have recently burned across California, Oregon and Washington, areas that produce 85% of the country’s wine.“It’s the first time in recent history that fires have impacted so many different wine grape growing regions,” said Anita Oberholster, Ph.D. with the University of California, Davis Department of Viticulture and Enology.She says America’s wine tourism is already struggling due to COVID-19 and that these fires could cost the industry even more through job loss and damaged products.“The problem with this year is the fires started much earlier than our harvest season,” Oberholster said. “About 10% of the grapes have been harvested and the rest were still on the vine. 2020 is not our year.”For many wineries, smoke taint of grapes is so severe, there might not be a 2020 vintage.“The 2020 vintage is going to be one where we’ll have a limited amount of high-quality wines,” Wolff said.While Wolff is working to keep his products from going down the drain and letting his wine go to waste, he says many in the industry are dealing with fire fatigue and that an increase in cost linked to these fires could be felt in years to come.“2023 probably particularly with reds is when impacts will be felt,” he said. “We’ll bounce back, but we’ll be a little black and blue.” 1930

INDIANAPOLIS — A new book you're sure to want to add to your collection is coming out next spring — staring none other than the Bunny of the United States (BOTUS). The second family's bunny, Marlon Bundo, is the focus of the book written by VP Mike Pence's middle child, Charlotte, and illustrated by her mother, Karen Pence. The announcement was made on the "Marlon Bundo" official Instagram account (@marlonbundo) Friday afternoon. "In the book, I follow Grampa around all day, as a BOTUS should, while he goes about his duties as Vice President," the announcement says. The book is set to be released March 19, 2018.  A portion of the proceeds from the book will go to charity.  749

INDIANAPOLIS — A man who had to be rescued from a retention pond on Indianapolis' northeast side Monday after he jumped in to rescue his dog has died. The incident happened in The Masters apartment complex at about 11:30 a.m., near Masters Road and E. 91st Street.The Indianapolis Fire Department says the man went after one of his dogs when the pup went into the icy water.The victim, a man in his 20s, was not able to get out of the water.Two residents of the complex saw the man trying to rescue his dog and tried to help. Both fell into the water but were able to get out and were treated at the scene for non-life threatening injuries. The victim was pulled from the water by a rescue team and rushed to St. Vincent Hospital where he later died. His identity has not been released. The victim's dog is expected to be OK.  859
