SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University astronomers played a role in the recent discovery of a third planet within the Kepler-47 planetary system.A team of researchers, led by astronomers from SDSU, discovered a new Neptune-size planet orbiting the system's two suns between two previously discovered planets.The planet, named Kepler-47d, was discovered using a method called, "transit method," according to to university. The method measures a level of brightness to help detect masses. "If the orbital plane of the planet is aligned edge-on as seen from Earth, the planet can pass in front of the host stars, leading to a measurable decrease in the observed brightness," a release from the school describes.RELATED: Researchers share photo of a black hole — the first ever in historyPreviously, the planet's signal was too weak to detect.“We saw a hint of a third planet back in 2012, but with only one transit we needed more data to be sure,” SDSU astronomer Jerome Orosz, the paper’s lead author, said in the release. “With an additional transit, the planet’s orbital period could be determined, and we were then able to uncover more transits that were hidden in the noise in the earlier data.”Kepler-47d is about seven times the size of Earth and takes 87 days to orbit around its suns.“We certainly didn’t expect it to be the largest planet in the system. This was almost shocking,” said William Welsh, SDSU astronomer and the study’s co-author.The entire Kepler-47 system itself is interesting as well. With two suns, it's the only known multi-planet circumbinary system. The system is extremely compact and would fit inside the orbit of Earth. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- SeaWorld San Diego is being allowed to reopen, but certain parts of the park will have to remain closed, a San Diego County spokesman said.A county spokesman told ABC 10News that the park is being allowed to reopen under California’s guidance for zoos.SeaWorld San Diego will be able to open its outdoor areas of the park, but indoor areas -- such as its aquariums -- and rides will not be open to guests under the specific zoo guidance.Under the zoo guidance, the park will have to post a Safe Reopening Plan like other businesses.It remains unknown when the park will officially reopen; SeaWorld San Diego officials did not immediately respond to ABC 10News’ request for comment.The park has been closed since March due to the coronavirus pandemic. The park's website states that for season passholders, tickets will be extended as long as the closure lasted.The company’s most recent earnings report revealed troubling numbers from the second quarter and first six months of 2020, including revenue down 96 percent compared to the same time last year.Parents around San Diego said the news is a welcome sign after a summer of closures. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some in the legal community are raising concerns that in-person federal court cases are putting attorneys and their clients in unnecessary danger.A letter sent by the Federal Defenders of San Diego Executive Director Kathryn Nester to United States Senator Kamala Harris says since raising concerns back in March about COVID-19's impact on federal detainees and criminal cases, the risk to their clients and staff has increased.According to the letter, "The increased danger stems from escalating prosecutions and the reopening of in-person court proceedings in our district, despite escalating COVID-19 infections in local jails and communities. These prosecutions are occurring on an uneven playing field, as the pandemic is undermining our clients' constitutional rights to a speedy trial and to confidential communication with their lawyers."Nester claims the United States Attorney's Office has substantially increased new prosecutions over the past several weeks.In the letter she states, "The USAO is increasing prosecutions while simultaneously winding down its practice – instituted at the beginning of the pandemic – of issuing Notices to Appear instead of arresting and detaining many defendants. The result is a growing jail population, which increases the risk of COVID-19 transmission."Nester also cites concerns about the condition of local jails and what's described as lack of testing, reporting, and transparency at these facilities.She adds that the increasing prosecutions are against clients with reduced constitutional safeguards."Requiring detainees to quarantine for 14 days after each court appearance effectively precludes trials, because defendants cannot be brought to court on consecutive days. So the government will bring clients to court to plead guilty, but not to exercise their constitutional right to a speedy trial," Nester stated.The U.S. Attorney's Office said it has dramatically reduced the number of new criminal cases in response to the COVID-19 pandemic."The Southern District of California stakeholders – the District Court, the U.S. Attorney's Office, the defense bar, the U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Pretrial Services, U.S. Probation and the Bureau of Prisons – have worked collaboratively over the past several months to adjust and deal with this unprecedented crisis," said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Unified School District is warning parents and staff of a breach involving the personal data of students and staff.District official said in a release the breach dating back to January 2018 may have impacted the personal data of as many as 500,000 students enrolled in the district between the 2008-2009 and 2018-2019 school years.The data is believe to have been accessed by a phishing email effort, according to the district. Those staff members and parents affected have been alerted by SDUSD.Officials said investigators began looking into reports of phishing emails in October 2018. At that time, roughly 50 staff members whose accounts were compromised had security on their accounts reset immediately, according to the district. An investigation determined that unauthorized access was gained to the district’s network services, including their student database. The student database contains personal identifying information, potential health information, scheduling, and grade information.The district says it has since taken steps to prevent unauthorized access from reoccurring and to "eliminate" any continuing threat.SDUSD told 10News the breach wasn't announced until now because officials wanted to verify all their information and not compromise the investigation.“Data security has become an increasing concern for public agencies, corporations and private citizens nationwide,” Toren Allen, executive director of San Diego Unified’s Integrated Technology Department, said. “We are constantly reviewing our practices and systems in an effort to find efficiencies and to identify potential vulnerabilities.”The district recommends that anyone whose data may have been accessed to remain vigilant of their credit cards and account and contact a credit reporting agency to notify them of the breach of information. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld's next big attraction is on track to open later this spring.Construction on the park's Tidal Twister roller coaster is set to be completed in May of this year, the park said Wednesday. The roller coaster is being hailed as a first-of-its-kind coaster with a figure-8, horizontal design and dueling trains in which riders sit both backward and forward.Tidal Twister will take riders on a journey as if they're riding the tide, accelerating 30 miles an hour, twisting and banking on a figure-8 track, and crossing an opposite facing train in the middle of the attraction.
