Mail is adding more fonts and formatting options, Notes has a new look, and the Reminders app has been beefed up with a number of new features, including tagging people and making smarter to-dos.Apple Maps, which has struggled to compete with Google Maps since it launched in 2012, is getting a new, more detailed look at the end of this year in the US. Apple says it rebuilt the app from the ground up by sending hundreds of planes and cars with custom sensors and lidar sensors over 4 million miles across the country. It's also adding other Google Maps-like features, such as favorite locations and interactive street view, which it calls "look around."With iOS 13, you'll be able to share your name and your photo (or custom emoji) in Messages. It's adding more personalization options for its "memojis," including makeup, piercings, more teeth options like gaps and grills, earrings, additional hair options, hats and glasses. The new feature, called AirPods Audio Sharing, will supposedly let you bring your AirPods close to someone else's and — with permission — tap a button to start listening to what they're rocking out to. Apple's underwhelming take on the smart speaker was launched two years ago, and now it's adding some new features, including being able to recognize the voices of different users — just like Amazon and Google's smart speakers.Privacy is, again, at the center of Apple's sales pitchApple is launching its own login platform called Sign in with Apple, which will let you log in to outside apps with FaceID. It has the option to hide your real email address and instead give each app a randomly generated email address. Google, Twitter and Facebook have their own sign-on tools already, but some security experts advise against using a single sign-in service across multiple sites, in case your one login is compromised. Sign In With Apple will work across Apple devices, including Macs and iPhones, but only with apps that update to support the feature.Other privacy updates include a new option to limit how much tracking information third-party apps can collect. Now you can choose to allow an app to get location information just once, as well as receive reports on background tracking. Apple is also blocking the ability for outside apps to sneakily gather location information via your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections.A more independent Apple Watch can track periods, monitor soundApple is bringing a number of new tools to the Apple Watch as part of watchOS 6, many of which will help the watch run more independently of the iPhone. The Watch will have its own App Store, a calculator with tip tools, an audiobooks app, and Apple's Voice Memos app, for more subtly recording audio (check local laws). It's also adding a pair of new health tools. Cycle Tracker adds tools for tracking periods and fertility -- tools that are also being added to the iOS Health app. A new Noise app uses the built-in microphone to measure environmental sound and warn you when the decibels are too high and could hurt your hearing. The computer is silver, covered in holes and has a handle on top. But professionals will likely care more about what is inside: a 28-core Intel chip and 1.5 TB of system memory. An Australian man who was injured in a volcanic eruption in New Zealand more than a month ago has died, becoming the 20th victim of the disaster, officials said Monday.Paul Browitt and his two daughters were caught in the Dec. 9 eruption on White Island. The body of Krystal Browitt, 21, was among six recovered from the island in the days after the eruption.Paul Browitt and his daughter Stephanie Browitt, 23, survived the eruption and were transferred to Alfred Hospital in their hometown of Melbourne three days after the disaster.A police statement confirmed Paul Browitt died on Sunday night as a result of injuries from the eruption. A hospital statement said he had been critically ill.Maria Browitt, the wife and mother of the victims, had remained on a ship while her family took a day trip to the island.Of 23 victims who remain in hospitals in New Zealand and Australia, at least five are listed as in critical condition, health authorities said. Authorities won’t comment on the conditions of two victims in Sydney at the request of relatives.Alfred Hospital said it was continuing to give specialized burn care to two volcano victims transferred there. BUFFALO, N.Y. — Hours before a 3-year-old boy was found sleeping alone on a porch in Buffalo, New York, the rental car that his parents were driving was burned and human remains were found inside, police said.The parents of the boy, 24-year-old Nicole Merced Plaud and 31-year-old Miguel Anthony Valentin-Colon, as well as their friend, 29-year-old Dhamyl Mirella Roman-Audiffred, are considered missing persons.Now, Buffalo Police have released video that identifies persons of interest after the burned out vehicle was discovered in Buffalo's Black Rock neighborhood near where the boy was found. Police were also able to make a connection between the burned-out car and the toddler found. The department released three videos. The first shows an individual with a shirt over their head walking to the location on Tonawanda Street where the car would be burned. The second shows what appears to be the same person, moving quickly away from the scene with another individual and a child. The individual stops to put a shirt back on their head. On the left side of the frame, a flash can be seen that may be the car being ignited in flames. The third video is a slower, enhanced version of the second video. 1219
