Beijing, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Officials from 28 countries across Asia and the Pacific gathered Thursday in Beijing for a high-level meeting on cooperation on children's rights in the Asia-Pacific region.Anthony Lake, executive director of the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), called for collaboration among Asia Pacific countries in protecting children's rights in a speech delivered at the meeting.Lake said,"We are already seeing the benefits of cooperation in areas that cut across borders, from preventing the spread of disease, to addressing the effects of climate change, to increasing child protection, to improving education."During the three-day meeting, more than 180 representatives from 28 countries in the Asia-Pacific region are expected to discuss issues on children's welfare and protection and the realization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), these being eight global anti-poverty objectives due to be accomplished by 2015.The meeting, scheduled from November 4 to 6, is hosted by the All-China Women's Federation, the National Working Committee for Children and Women under the State Council, China's Ministry of Commerce, and with support from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's national political advisors Thursday offered suggestions on the national development plan for 2011 to 2015, at a meeting of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) in Beijing.Jia Qinglin, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, the top political advisory body, attended the meeting.At the gathering, 15 CPPCC members made speeches in which they advised the government on issues such as improving education, adjusting income distribution, developing the western regions, enhancing China's innovative abilities and public welfare.The Communist Party of China Central Committee outlined the key objectives of the 12th five-year development plan in a four-day meeting that ended on Monday.The plan will be drawn up by the State Council, or the Cabinet. China's top legislature, the National People's Congress, will vote on the plan at its annual plenary session early next year.

BEIJING, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- China has decided to postpone a negotiation with Japan on the East China Sea issue as part of its response to the seizure of a Chinese fishing boat, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu Friday night.The postponed talks, the second governmental negotiations on the principle common understandings on the East China Sea issue, had been scheduled for mid September, according to Jiang.A Japanese court on Friday, despite Chinese protests, ruled a 10-day detention through Sept.19 against the captain of a Chinese trawler which collided with Japanese patrol ships off the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea on Tuesday.The Chinese trawler under detention stops at the harbor of Ishigaki, Okinawa, Japan, Sept. 9, 2010. Japan's acts have violated the law of nations and basic international common sense, and are ridiculous, illegal and invalid," Jiang said."Japan will reap as it has sown, if it continues to act recklessly," Jiang warned.Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Friday summoned Japanese Ambassador to China Uichiro Niwa, saying China's determination to defend its sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands and the interests of the Chinese people was unswerving.Yang said China demanded Japan immediately and unconditionally release the boat and all the crew, including the captain.On Tuesday, two Japan Coast Guard patrol ships and the Chinese fishing boat collided in waters off the Diaoyu Islands.No injuries were reported, but the fishing boat was then intercepted by the Japanese patrol.

TIANJIN, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Coca Cola, the world's largest beverage maker, will begin operations at its largest bottling plant in China, a 900-million-yuan (132-million-US dollar) investment in Luohe City of central China's Henan province, by the end of October this year."We are very positive and committed to our growth here in China," said Glenn Jordan, president of Coca Cola Pacific Region, during an exclusive interview with Xinhua while attending the fourth Summer Davos forum held in north China's port city of Tianjin, on Monday.The soft-drink giant already operates 39 plants in China. It opened three new plants in Jiangxi Province, Hubei Province and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region last year. Also, it now has two factories under construction, including the largest one in Henan and the other in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.Statistics from the company showed its investment in the new plant in Hubei Province has reached 600 million yuan, while the cost of the two-phase project in Jiangxi Province added up to 250 million yuan.Jordan said these are all parts of Coca Cola's three-year, 2-billion-US dollar investment plan in China announced last March, and the project is now "well on track" in terms of infrastructure, marketing and product development.Jordan believes the expansion was good for both sides. "On average, we are hiring around 10 people per day in the Coca Cola system and putting almost 1,000 coolers per day in the market."The investment package also includes a 90-million-US dollar innovation and research center in Shanghai. One new beverage created at the center last November was Minute Maid Pulpy Super Milky, which combines fruit juice, milk powder, whey protein and coconut bits to create a creamy fruit-flavored dairy drink."The Shanghai research center has been very productive and very rewarding," Jordan said, "We have already taken some of its innovations and technologies to other parts of Asia and to the world's markets."As for the business environment in China, Jordan believes the country is moving in a better direction, as it has continuously improved its business operating rules and regulations."We have been here for more than 30 years, during which China has changed rapidly. GUANGZHOU, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao lit the Asian Games torch from a specially designed cauldron in Beijing's Temple of Heaven Tuesday morning, marking the official start of the month-long relay for the 16th Asian Games.The torch relay will cover Beijing, Harbin, Changchun, Shandong's Haiyang, and 21 cities in southern Guangdong Province before arriving at the Asian Games opening ceremony in Guangzhou on November 12.Guangzhou, capital city of Guangdong, has been preparing itself for the games for the past six years, after it won the bid to host the Games in July 2004.The construction of the venues and the Asian Games Village has been completed.
