SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego City Council was recently warned about the damage an earthquake can cause to the region, specifically on the county's water system."Strengthen their water system, make that long-term investment," seismologist Lucy Jones said of the city's aging water infrastructure. A water main break occurred in the same area in January 2017 as well.Water main breaks last August in Mission Hills, Point Loma, the Midway District, and Spring Valley also left residents and businesses without water. As of August, there had been at least 29 water main breaks around the county in 2018.Since 2013, San Diego has spent about 8 million repairing and replacing 116 miles of water transmission lines and distribution pipes, according to city documents. Though, the city still has more than 3,000 miles of pipeline to replace, San Diego Pulbic Utilities Department spokesperson Brent Eidson told 10News in August."To do it properly, we're probably always going to be replacing pipes," Eidson said.Buildings and BridgesWhen it comes to older structures throughout the county, it comes down to what standards were used when constructing a building.Geologist Pat Abbott says California has been proactive about preparing for earthquakes — he applauded the upgrades made to the Coronado Bay Bridge."You have an upright here and a horizontal road bed and they don't shake the same way," Abbott said of bridge construction. Dating back to the 1950s, it will soon be replaced with two parallel bridges with three travel lanes in both directions, including bike lanes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Lifeguards and firefighters responded to Blacks Beach on Sunday to rescue an injured paraglider from a ravine.The 27-year-old woman, who is a pilot, was teaching an advanced training course for paragliding when she lost lift and her parachute collapse, according to lifeguards.Witnesses told lifeguards that the woman tried to brace her impact with her legs as she landed into a ravine next to a popular trail called "Citizens Trail."Lifeguards say the woman was far from the trail when she landed and San Diego Fire-Rescue was called to perform a technical rescue to lift her up the trail.The pilot was taken to a nearby hospital, though the extent of her injuries was not clear, lifeguards said. 734

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County officials urged people across the county to cooperate with the latest public health orders and purple tier restrictions Monday.The county broke its record for the highest single-day COVID-19 cases reported on Sunday at 1,087. The second highest day was reported Monday with 833 new cases.During an emergency briefing, county officials said too many people fail to take the proper measures to slow the spread.“It is really about wearing facial coverings, and the social distancing, and staying home when you are sick,” said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer.“As we go into the Thanksgiving holiday, we know that people want to get together, but I encourage you to follow the guidance that we have posted on our website, that the state, as well as the CDC, are recommending. Really limit your engagements or gatherings over the holidays. Follow the guidance from the state, no more than three households. I would strongly encourage you not to travel out of state.”County Supervisor Greg Cox said cease and desist letters were sent to several businesses and entities that refused to follow the purple tier closure orders over the weekend.Wooten recently asked law enforcement agencies to step up enforcement efforts in their jurisdictions; Supervisor Cox sent similar letters Friday.“On Friday, I sent a letter to all the mayors in our region to have them step up enforcement of state and local public health orders. "As we all grapple with the enormous scale and impact of the coronavirus in the U.S., it reminds us of how precious life is and the importance of protecting our own health," CEO Tony Ueber said in a news release.
