The sand was used to create a berm along the west side of the beach, closest to the homes, that could protect against storm surges of up to 15 feet while more sand was placed along the shoreline, extending the beach and moving the waves further away from properties.“I think the beach replenishment project is very important,” said Nee Jersey Department of Environmental Protection chief resiliency officer Dave Rosenblatt. “Without it, we would’ve expected to see a lot more damage from Sandy and frankly, normal nor’easters.”Superstorm Sandy in the fall of 2012 was the catalyst for the project. The storm’s worst damage was felt about 100 miles north of Margate where the boardwalk was ripped up and homes were left without power for days, and in some cases, weeks.“After Sandy, it was very easy to compare the areas that had beach replenishments and dunes to those that did not,” said Rosenblatt.But Margate is just an example of several coastal cities around the country that are doing things differently.“As the sea level rises, most people are more worried about what’s going to be underwater. That’s not as important as the flood plane is expanding,” said Galen Newman, associate professor of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning at Texas A&M. “I think there are many cities exploring options.”After Hurricane Harvey, Houston built more greenspace in its downtown area so water could better drain. On the Texas coast, near Galveston, engineers have been considering a dike to stop flooding. After Hurricane Ike in 2008, the area withstood billions in damages, and experts worry the next strong storm to target the area could cause catastrophic effects to the economy as the area is America's leading producer of petroleum.Furthermore, in parts of Florida, new building codes now mandate buildings withstand winds of up to 130 MPH,, a low-end Category 4 hurricane. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A federal judge has ruled that Texas’ statewide mask mandate must extend to inside polling places. But election officials Wednesday did not appear to be rushing to enforce the order. It was handed down after more than 8 million people have already cast ballots. U.S. District Judge Jason Pulliam said not requiring face coverings in Texas polling places created a discriminatory burden on Black and Latino voters, who are at higher risk of death and severe illness from the coronavirus. Texas Governor Greg Abbott had included an exemption for polling places in his statewide mask mandate. The governor said he encourages people to wear a face mask but exempted polling places from the mandate because he didn't want voters turned away from the polls just because they didn't have a mask, according to the Texas Tribune. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton immediately appealed Tuesday’s ruling. AVON PARK -- A traffic stop in Avon Park, Florida, on Sunday led to what the Highlands County Sheriff's Office calls one of the largest drug seizures in recent memory in their county. Deputies confiscated enough fentanyl to kill nearly 40,000 people, as well as over a pound of heroin and nearly a pound of cocaine.Around 7:40 p.m., Deputy Seth Abeln saw a blue Ford Focus on North Central Avenue that had a tag light out. After Abeln stopped the vehicle, Deputy Ben Jones and K-9 Gentry were called to do a free air sniff of the vehicle. According to the sheriff's office, Gentry indicated there were drugs in the car.A search of the vehicle turned up:● 554 grams of heroin● 450 grams of cocaine● 99.6 grams of fentanyl● 975 oxycodone pills● 107 Xanax pills● 90 vape pens with liquid THCThe sheriff's office says a dose of 2-3 milligrams of fentanyl is enough to be deadly, meaning there was enough of the drug to kill 40,000 people using 2.5 milligrams as a fatal dose. BALTIMORE - A woman and man are dead and at least seven other people are seriously hurt after a gas explosion caused three homes to collapse Monday morning in Northwest Baltimore.As rescue crews and K-9's continued combing through the rubble overnight, a man's body was discovered just before 1 a.m. Tuesday. Ashland University in Ohio is offering a new ,000 scholarship to talented Fortnite players."Fortnite Battle Royale" will be offered in fall 2018 as part of the university's esports program.The AU esports team will be the first known program in the country to add the game to its official offerings. Head Coach Josh Buchanan is excited to add the popular game to the college's gaming titles."Fortnite appeals to both the core and casual gaming audience," said Buchanan in a news release.
