The US Food and Drug Administration has again expanded the list of recalled medications that contain valsartan, used as a component in a set of drugs to treat heart failure and blood pressure.The expanded list was posted Monday.The FDA announced an initial recall in July after lab tests revealed that some drugs could have been tainted with a substance that may lead to a higher risk of cancer. The drug had been recalled in 22 other countries.The expanded recall includes some drugs that contain valsartan and hydrochlorothisazide, but not all drugs containing valsartan are affected. 594

The World Health Organization updated its guidelines on mask-wearing Tuesday, recommending that anyone over the age of 12 wear a mask indoor and outdoor and inside your home if it's ventilated poorly.The updated guidelines come as COVID-19 cases continue to sore in America. On Wednesday, 180,083 new cases were reported, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.According to the guidelines, in areas where COVID is spreading, WHO recommends that anyone over the age of 12 wear masks in shops, shared workplaces, and schools if they can't maintain a distance of more than 3-feet between others.They also recommend masks be worn when people visit your home if there's not adequate ventilation, or you can't be more than 3-feet or more from each other.The WHO said on top of wearing a mask, other precautions such as washing hands, avoiding touching your face, having adequate ventilation if indoors, testing, contact tracing, quarantine, and isolation should also be taken."Together, these measures are critical to prevent human-to-human transmission of COVID-19," WHO said.In areas of COVID-19 spread, the organization said healthcare workers should take part in "universal masking" in health care facilities, meaning they should wear an N95 respirator mask throughout their entire shift, including when caring for other patients.The advice applied to visitors, outpatients, and common areas such as cafeterias and staff rooms, but added administrative staff does not need to wear a mask if they are not exposed to patients.The organization also recommended that people who do vigorous physical activity should not wear masks, citing some associated risks, particularly asthma.For children, the WHO recommends children up to 5-years-old should not wear masks for source control. They added that children between the ages of 6 to 11-years-old should only wear masks if "a risk-based approach is applied.""Factors to be considered in the risk-based approach include intensity of COVID-19 transmission, child’s capacity to comply with the appropriate use of masks and availability of appropriate adult supervision, local social and cultural environment, and specific settings such as households with elderly relatives, or schools," the organization added in its guidelines. 2285

The United States is at the beginning of a second wave of significant job loss.“We are seeing a resurgence in layoffs that has been quite clearly indicated in the last couple of weeks,” said Daniel Alpert, an adjunct professor and senior fellow at Cornell University.Cornell University recently published a study showing about a third of the people who went back to work during the pandemic have now been laid off for a second time. Another 26 percent of workers have been warned by their employers that future furloughs and layoffs may soon come.“The problem is that you get an echo,” said Alpert. “So, if you have a resurgence in layoffs, a decrease in spending, that creates more contraction on the part of businesses, which creates more layoffs. The question is, when can you put a floor under this spiraling situation? It is a classic economic spiral.”The cycle--of job loss eventually leading to more job loss--is causing some to fear it could lead to a third wave of unemployment in a few months. The Tampa Police Department is searching for a young man who was caught on camera doing a skateboard trick across a custom-painted car in Ybor City.A spokesperson for the police department said the case is being investigated as a felony criminal mischief. Detectives would like to speak with Dalton Newbury as a person of interest. According to those who have shared the video that's getting thousands of shares on Facebook, it was originally posted to Instagram by the skateboarder himself. The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces have detained a US citizen who had been fighting with ISIS in Syria, a US military official told CNN Thursday.The official added that it appeared that the American citizen surrendered to Kurdish elements of the Syrian Democratic Forces.A spokesperson for the US-led coalition fighting ISIS would not confirm that a US citizen was in the custody of the SDF, referring questions to the US State Department."We have seen those same reports and the SDF as our partner has taken an oath to make sure that any fighters that they capture that they maintain them and bring them to the proper authorities. In this case the proper authorities would be the equivalent of the department of state in the country," Col. Ryan Dillon told reporters at the Pentagon via a video conference from Baghdad."If this was a US citizen it would be the Department of State to find out the updates on that particular person," Dillon added.A State Department official told CNN that the department was aware of the reports but said that they "have no information to share at this time."The Justice Department and the FBI also declined to comment.The Daily Beast was first to report that a US citizen had been detained by the SDF.This isn't the first US citizen fighting for ISIS to be detained by US allies in the region.
