A volunteer in the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine trial in Brazil has reportedly died.According to Bloomberg, the participant hadn't received the company's vaccine, but it's unclear how they died.Brazilian outlet Globo reported that the volunteer was a 28-year-old doctor from Rio de Janeiro who'd been working as a COVID-19 frontline worker.Reuters reported that Anvisa, Brazil's National Health Surveillance Agency, said the trial would continue but did not provide any further details.Following the news, AstraZeneca shares dropped about 1%, CNBC reported.AstraZeneca's trial has been on hold since Sept. 8, after an unexplained illness popped up in a patient in the United Kingdom.According to Reuters, AstraZeneca plans to resume its trial sometime this week. 770

Shadow Health is using virtual patients to train real people in hopes of quickly bringing those real students into the workforce.From pediatrics to maternal health, the future of nursing school is happening now.“The technology is so good, you’ll get an answer. You might not get the answer you’re looking for; you’ll have to rephrase and that’s the way it is in real life too,” said Lorrie Rilko, an assistant professor at George Washington University’s School of Nursing.She was a nurse practitioner for 30 years and then decided it was time to help the next generation of nurses.“My greatest responsibility is to prepare future nurse practitioners in the art of accurate history taking and skilled physical exam and then putting all of the pieces of the puzzle together to come up with a clinical diagnosis,” Rilko said.She says George Washington University was already using this simulated technology when the pandemic hit. The pandemic put the program in the perfect position to continue training new medical professionals and it allows them to learn, practice and fail on computers rather than on real live patients.“It's kind of like telehealth,” Rilko said. “We’ve had telehealth and until we had to really rely on telehealth, there were a lot of barriers to overcome."Brent Gordon is the managing director for Elsevier's nursing and health education business, which recently acquired Shadow Health.“One of the challenges in higher education institutions, specifically in the United States and this is true worldwide, is that they have challenges meeting the demand, they have capacity constraints,” Gordon said. “One example is shortage of clinical space. Digital simulations help solve that problem.”He says one of the real problems that the virtual education solves is that of communication, which he says can be at the root of medical malpractice claims.“Nurses are increasingly graduating, passing the (National Council Licensure Examination) NCLEX but not entering practice with the clinical reasoning skills they need to be successful on day one," said Gordon.Rilko said her students enjoy the virtual interaction, and they like training on their own time. A teacher at a Virginia high school was fired this week for allegedly refusing to stop calling a transgender male student a girl, ABC News reported. The teacher, Peter Vlaming, was reportedly fired for violating the school's nondiscrimination and anti-harassment policies. Vlaming was a French teacher at West Point High School in West Point, Va. "After thoughtful deliberation, the School Board voted to support the superintendent’s recommendation," the school's board wrote in a statement. "The School Board has adopted policies and tonight we upheld these policies."Vlaming claimed that his religion prevented him from identifying the boy by his preferred pronoun. Vlaming did agree to use the student's male name. A petition, which has more than 2,000 signatures, was launched in support of Vlaming. Vlaming said in the petition, "I won't use male pronouns with a female student that now identifies as a male though I did agree to use the new masculine name but avoid female pronouns. Administration is requiring that I use masculine pronouns in any and every context at school. I was informed that any further instances of using female pronouns would be grounds for termination." On Friday, students held a walkout and protest at the school in response to Vlaming's firing, WWBT-TV reported. “The school board is trying to force the teacher to conform to their ideologies with the threat of removal from the school,” Forrest Rohde, a junior who organized the walkout, told WWBT. James Millner, the president of Virginia Pride, agreed with the board's decision. "He violated school policy, despite multiple warnings from administrators. A Marin County, California doctor says his research into medical marijuana has identified a compound that can help diabetes patients.Dr. Michael Moskowitz, President of Bay Area Pain Medical Associates, says it’s not about getting high, it’s about getting well – and he thinks he’s on to something.Moskowitz believes he has identified a rare component of marijuana called THCV that he says is helping one of his diabetic patients – a patient who’s blood sugar level varies between 50 and 1000 in a single day.“It’s not clear, but it appears that, on a preliminary basis, for the first month that he did that, the extent of how much he varied seems to be less,” said Moskowitz.THCV is found in a strain of marijuana called Black Beauty. It’s leaves are much darker than most marijuana.Although she doesn’t have diabetes, Nina Murphy has chronic neck and back pain she used to treat with traditional pain medication. “I was a little skeptical. I haven’t used marijuana before so it’s not something I was just going to jump into,” said Murphy. “I’m extremely pleased and I hope to off my meds in the next couple months so, yeah!”Moskowitz says more study needs to be done with Black Beauty. “Just having the opportunity to work with something that clearly has therapeutic value, but figuring out how to optimize that and make that work the best for the most number of people is very exciting,” he said.Moskowitz will travel to Miami next week to speaking at a conference to discuss his findings. 1500
