BANGKOK, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of Bangkok residents gathered in the city centre on Thursday, making ten thousand micro-organism balls to help clean the polluted water in flooded areas.Organized by local volunteer groups, the activity aimed to make 10,000 Effective Micro-organism balls (EM Ball), which are proven to be efficient in cleaning contaminated floodwater.According to Danal Chanchaochai, the organizer of the event, people in flooded areas were facing critical conditions as germs may spread in polluted water and threat their health. Mainly consist of soil, rice bran and micro-organisms, a tennis-sized EM Ball is capable to clean up 10 liter of water and can last for as long as one month, which making it a perfect water sanitizer.Another main objective of the event was to educate citizens on the simple steps of making EM Balls, in case of more flood in the city, he said. The organization had generated buzz on social media sites like facebook and twitter, calling everyone to help.Held at Amarin Plaza, one shopping mall at city centre, the activity attracted groups of volunteers, including office workers, local students and even foreign visitors.Volunteers were lining up to get the raw materials from the collection point and gave back completed EM Balls to the distribution centre in boxes. Residents needed to present their identity cards in order to retrieve the donated water cleaners.Volunteer Kulawan Ayura Chai said that, although her house hadn' t been affected by water yet, she understood the difficult situation faced by the victims and felt responsible to help.Lasted for three days from Thursday to Saturday, the activity aimed to make 100,000 EM Balls, adding to the 30,000 balls made earlier, to distribute to the flood victims in Bangkok and other regions in Thailand.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Google will launch its new music service next week, U.S. media reported on Friday. In an emailed invitation, Google said it will hold an event called "These Go to Eleven" next Wednesday in Los Angeles, which is expected to be the debut of Google Music, tech news website The Verge reported.Google is reported to be adding new features over the current version of its music service, such as a MP3 music store with connection to its social network Google+.According to a separate report from technology news site CNET on Friday, Google has not yet got licensing deals with all four of the major labels -- Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and EMI.Google introduced a beta version of its music service called Music Beta in May, enabling users to upload their entire music libraries for free to Google servers and stream songs from any browser or Android-based devices.Since the search giant failed to come to license agreements with major music labels at the time, Music Beta is essentially a massive cloud storage hard drive.

BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- Scientists have discovered that blind optimism is related to brain's frontal lobes which are associated with processing errors, according to a British study published Monday in the journal Nature Neuroscience.Scientists at the University College of London scanned brains of volunteers who were asked to estimate their personal likelihood of involving in negative events, like a divorce or cancer,  before and after given the average probability of these events occurring. They found that the volunteers who estimated lower probability (or the more optimistic ones) than the given one raised their estimates a little bit later while those estimated higher probability altered their estimates much more.Through the brain scanner, scientists saw there was less activity in the volunteers' frontal regions when the information given was worse than expected while more activity when the information was better than expected. It suggested that the more optimistic people neglected the negative predictions."The more optimistic we are, the less likely we are to be influenced by negative information about the future," said Dr. Tali Sharot, lead author of the study. He added being optimistic clearly had some benefits, "but it can also mean that we are less likely to take precautionary action, such as practising safe sex or saving for retirement. So why don't we learn from cautionary information?"

HELSINKI, Nov.23 (Xinhua) -- Nokia Siemens Networks is planning to cut its workforce by 17,000 worldwide by the end of 2013, the company said in a statement on Wednesday in Espoo, Finland. The company said the measures are part of an extensive global restructuring program, in which it will focus on mobile broadband and services."We need to take the necessary steps to maintain long term competitiveness and improve profitability in a challenging telecommunications market," said the company's Chief Executive Rajeev Suri in the statement.Rajeev Suri called the job cuts regrettable but necessary, and said the company would provide support for individuals and communities affected by the cuts, but defended the decision on economic grounds.Nokia Siemens is aiming to cut operating expenditures by around a billion euros over two years. Some 74,000 people currently work for the Espoo-based company in 150 countries, around 7,000 in Finland. The company will announce the geographical distribution of the job cuts later on.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Overweight or obesity may put children at three times greater risk for high blood pressure than those of normal weight, according to researchers from the Regenstrief Institute and Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine.Their study will appear in the November issue of Hypertension: Journal of the American Heart Association with advance online publication on Monday.More than 1,100 healthy Indiana school children were followed for nearly five years. The researchers found that when body mass index (BMI) reached or exceeded the 85th percentile for the age and gender of the child -- designated as being overweight -- the risk of high blood pressure nearly tripled. Obesity was defined as a BMI percentile higher than 95th. BMI is a measurement of body fat calculated from weight and height.Among study participants, 14 percent of overweight or obese children were pre-hypertensive or hypertensive, compared with 5 percent of normal weight children. These findings were consistent across age, gender and race. The average age at time of study enrollment was 10.2 years. Each child was assessed approximately eight times during the course of the study. All were healthy children and none were taking medication affecting blood pressure."Higher blood pressure in childhood sets the stage for high blood pressure in adulthood," said Regenstrief Institute Investigator Wanzhu Tu, professor of biostatistics at IU School of Medicine, who led the study. "Targeted interventions are needed for these children. Even small decreases in BMI could yield major health benefits."The researcher also found that leptin, a protein hormone which is involved in body weight regulation and metabolism, was positively associated with increased blood pressure in overweight and obese children.
