QUICKSBURG, Va. – With a push of a button, 40,000 square feet seemingly come to life to show off America’s love affair with parades. “Every parade float tells a story,” said Joe Proctor, general manager of the American Celebration on Parade. Nestled in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, it’s a retirement village of sorts – for some of the largest floats of America’s most iconic parades. “Most people have no clue or no idea how big these parade floats are,” Proctor said. “Some of these or as long as 80 feet long and also go up to heights of over 30 feet.” Proctor grew up at the museum – literally. Now, he runs the place. “I always felt a special love in my heart, like there was something in that,” he said. “I was a part of something very special.” So how did it all come to be here? Back in the 1940s, a man named Earl Hargrove was designing storefront window displays in Washington, D.C. His work caught the eye of President Harry Truman, who asked him to design a float for his inauguration parade. And the rest is history: Hargrove’s floats have appeared in every presidential inauguration parade since then. “We have a parade float that came out of Ronald Reagan's inauguration that's over 65 feet long and about 30 feet tall,” Proctor said. That’s not all: their floats have appeared in the Tournament of Roses Parade and Thanksgiving Day, among others. “Earl Hargrove loved parade floats,” Proctor said. “He loved decorating. And each year the parade floats kept getting bigger.” Hargrove couldn’t bear to get rid of them, so he built the museum to house them. We had the place all to ourselves on one December day, but during the summer, tens of thousands of people make their way there to see the lights, sounds and plenty of glitter. “He used to put glitter on lots of different things because he loved the flash,” Proctor said. A Florida woman is facing attempted murder charges after police say she told her four children to unbuckle their seat belts and then purposefully drove a minivan into a tree yesterday.Calicia Williams and the children, who are between 7 and 13 years old, were all injured in the crash, Ocala police said in a release.Williams was speeding and told the children to take off their seat belts and stretch out their hands before the crash, according to the release."The devil can't hurt you, he only hurts bad people," Williams said just before the crash, according to the police report, which cited a witness whose name was redacted. A Japanese space probe has successfully fired a "bullet" into an asteroid as part of a mission to collect rock samples from the celestial body.The projectile disturbed material from the exterior of asteroid Ryugu which then floated from its surface due to the weak gravitational field.These particles were successfully collected by the probe, according to Japan's space agency JAXA, which announced that the Hayabusa 2 craft had successfully touched down on on the asteroid on Friday morning Japanese time.JAXA scientists had expected to find a powdery surface on Ryugu, but tests showed that the asteroid is covered in larger gravel.As a result the team had to carry out a simulation to test whether the projectile would be capable of disturbing enough material to be collected by what scientists call a "sample horn," which protrudes from the underside of the probe.This video shows the success of a December 28 test, which green-lit the asteroid landing.The team is planning a total of three sampling events over the next few weeks.Hayabusa 2 will depart Ryugu in December 2019 and return to Earth by the end of 2020 with its precious cargo of samples, which will be analyzed by scientists such as John Bridges, a professor of planetary science at the University of Leicester, UK.Bridges, who was also involved in the first Hayabusa mission, told CNN via telephone on Thursday that the event was "nail-biting stuff" due to the extreme precision involved in landing on Ryugu."This is a significant mission," said Bridges.
