SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Sheriffs deputies detained a man in Lemon Grove this afternoon, who may be connected to an early morning carjacking.It was supposed to be a routine check-up. A 76-year-old woman was going in for a 7 a.m. eye appointment at a medical office on the 3900 block of Fourth Avenue in Hillcrest.But she never made it.“The man with the gun pointed it at the woman, so I guess it was just taking place, and she scrammed out of there and called 911," a woman named Nancy said. She said her friend witnessed the carjacking happen from across the parking structure.San Diego Police detectives said a shorter, thin, Hispanic man with short hair approached the grandmother, pointed a gun at her face, stole her purse, and drove off in her gray Mazda 3.Officers notified all nearby agencies to search for that car.Then at 9:45 a.m., the car was found on Lemon Grove Way in Lemon Grove. But it was in bad condition. “A few hours later, the Diego Sheriffs Department responded to a hit-and-run that involved that very vehicle, the victim’s vehicle," Lt. Andrew Hoffman of the San Diego Police Department said. Witnesses said the driver of the Mazda 3 hit a parked red Honda Civic, veered into a pole, then ran away.For two hours, investigators set up a perimeter of the area and used a helicopter to look for the car-jacking and hit-and-run suspect. But they came up empty.Then at 2 p.m., detectives did a secondary search of the apartment complex.That is when one of the deputies recognized a wanted man and arrested him. “I guess the guy walked out of the apartment, the other officer saw him from the back of the cop car, must have recognized him," witness Floyd Bloom said. "So that’s when they yanked him out of the car. But he reached for the officer’s taser and his gun. And so they tased him.”San Diego sheriffs deputies said the man they detained is a tall, thin Caucasian man, who was possibly wearing a disguise.Detectives said a curly, black-haired wig fell off of the man during his struggle with police. They also found a rifle and ammunition in the back of his trunk.San Diego County Sheriffs deputies detained the man, then handed him over to the San Diego Police department. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — University of San Diego is sidelining its plans to return to some form of on-campus classes this fall unless given approval by state and local officials.A statement from USD President James Harris read that due to the rising number of cases locally and in California, as well as the lack of reopening guidance for colleges, they will offer remote learning for all fall undergraduate and graduate courses.The undergraduate semester is still set to begin on Aug. 17, according to the school."At the time of my original announcement, the number of daily cases of COVID-19 in San Diego County was approximately 100, and given the shut-down order then in place, we were optimistic the situation would be much improved by the Fall," Harris' statement read. "Instead, the number of daily cases skyrocketed, and San Diego is now averaging more than 400 cases per day."With less than a month to go before we begin Fall classes for undergraduates, we have reached the point where a final decision has to be made."Originally, the campus planned to offer in-person courses as part of a hybrid approach to the academic year. USD says it can still pivot to the planned hybrid model if conditions improve. The school added that the campus will also continue to offer students options for remote or in-person classes when they receive permission to move forward with the plan."The good news is that all of the great work of the task forces preparing for the Fall will benefit us as we move forward. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- America’s Freedom Bell, which has been traveling across the country for years, officially has a permanent home in San Diego.Wednesday, the bell was unveiled at its new home at the Veterans Museum in Balboa Park. Before that, it was kept in a storage facility in between travels.Richard Rovsek, a Rancho Santa Fe resident and founder of the Spirit of Liberty Foundation, drew up a design for the bell on a napkin during a meal. 72 hours later he learned it would become a reality.Rovsek created the bell to give Americans a chance to ring it and honor the men and women who served our nation. Five million Americans have rung the bell so far.“It’s closure for families,” said Rovesek.The bell was cast on June 6, 2013 with full military honors on the 69th anniversary of D-Day. It has traveled to Independence Hall, Arlington Cemetery, Pearl Harbor, Normandy Beach and more. It will continue to travel occasionally, but will forever call San Diego home. On the bell are the timeless words “Honor Our Armed Forces Past, Present and Future.” It includes emblems for every branch of the military and contains 11 pounds of steel from the World Trade Center.Wednesday, the Spirit of Liberty Foundation and The Veterans Museum at Balboa Park also announced the creation of “America’s Patriotic Honor Roll” which will include the names of more than 100 million veterans who have served since 1776. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With the pandemic prompting San Diegans to wear facial coverings, and practice physical distancing and stringent hand hygiene, flu season's start has been slowed.According to the county's Influenza Watch report published Oct. 21, San Diego County has reported 10 flu cases to date this season, compared to 320 cases at this time last year. Last year's season totaled 20,711 flu cases.The county says no influenza-related deaths have been reported so far this season. The CDC says the flu season in the U.S. typically occurs in the fall and winter, with the season peaking in December and February.County health officials say health precautions due to the coronavirus and an increase in the rate of residents receiving flu vaccinations have kept flu numbers low so far."Influenza activity has been very low so far this season in San Diego County. This may in part be due to the social distancing, hand washing, and mask wearing interventions instituted to reduce the transmission of SARS-CoV2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Seasonal influenza vaccinations are being recorded in the San Diego Immunization Registry at a higher rate than at this same point in any previous season, with 637,696 San Diegans immunized through week 42," the county's report said.Week 42 covers case totals up to the week ending Oct. 17.According to the county, 70% of this year's flu cases cover Influenza A, while 30% include Influenza B. 1445
