SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local group is teaming up with a non-profit organization to help fight the unemployment rates among young adults in San Diego. Casa Familia came up with the idea to start a coffee cart, training teenagers and 20-year-olds in different skills to run the coffee business. San Ysidro Health Center jumped on board to help with the funding of the project. Ana Melgoza is the Vice President of General Affairs for San Ysidro Health Center. She tells 10News it was an obvious decision."We said 'yes, of course' as soon as Casa Familia approached us with this wonderful and innovative endeavor," Melgoza said.El K-Fe hired six baristas, graduates of Casa Familiar's youth barista training program. The ,000 coffee cart now sits in the central hub of the health center. The baristas and managers are all young adults who have gone through many months of training. Francisco Dominguez is a student at Southwestern College and among the first to join the project."It’s kind of giving hope to the youth that think that they don't have a chance. They have a chance; we all have a chance. I started out like them now I'm looking forward to what the future has and what I can do with this and what we can do as a team," said Dominguez.Dominguez said the project is beneficial for many reasons but mostly for the skills learned at such a young age."Most jobs are 18 and older, so with this internship, it's 14 and older; so high school students: sophomores, freshmen, juniors, seniors in high school, can join the program, can get that job experience they need so once they graduate, they can get that job."The plan is to reinvest proceeds from the first El K-Fe coffee cart to establish more carts and create more youth job and training opportunities.  1820

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new report reveals water usage continues to climb quickly since state water restrictions were lifted in 2016. Romy Meraz finds joy in watering her yard at her home in Bonita."I know the plants are happy and I'm happy for them," said Meraz. It was a different story amid the state-mandated restrictions, when she cut her watering to once a week. Years later, she'll be watering four or five times a week this summer."I want my garden to be beautiful and green," said Meraz.Meraz isn't alone. According to a report from the research group Equinox Project, The Nonprofit Institute at University of San Diego, the average daily water consumption increased from 84 gallons per person to 91 gallons per person. That's an increase of 8.3 percent. It's still shy of the 119 gallons per day in 2007, but the usage has been steadily going up since restrictions were lifted."Even with the rains, with climate change ... we know another drought will come along so we need to be prepared. We've done it in the past. It's not a matter of whether we can do it. We can," said Nilmini Silva-Send, a researcher with the Equinox Project. When it comes to the biggest daily water users, the Santa Fe Irrigation District is tops at 363 gallons per person, followed by the Rainbow Municipal Water District and Valley Center Municipal Water District. Among the factors: lot size. 1382

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A patient at a North Park dental office got upset after she got hit with surprise fee.Two Thursdays ago, Linda Morrow - donning a mask and gloves - went to Pristine Dental Group for a root canal and bone grafting. After the procedure, Morrow, who doesn't have dental insurance, paid cash for the bill. It was in line with the estimate."The total bill was 0. I didn't have change, so I gave them 0 because I only had bills," said Morrow.Morrow says when no one in the office could make change, the receptionist spoke up."She commented, 'Oh, PPE.'" said Morrow.Morrow says her new bill was for 0 dollars, including a charge for personal protective equipment used by the dental staff."That shut my mouth. I was stunned," said Morrow.Confused, Morrow paid the full amount and left."My concept was that it was definitely an afterthought. If I had exactly 0 or my debit card, I would not have had to pay the charge," said Morrow.Morrow posted details of the charge of the Nextdoor app. Quickly, several neighbors responded that they also have paid similar charges at their dentist offices, ranging from to . In an email sent out to patients one of the dentists attributed it to the "inflated cost of PPE.""If I had to buy my own personal protective equipment for me and my family, they should have to buy it for themselves," said Morrow.Morrow points out no other businesses has charged her for their PPE. On its website, the California Dental Association cautions dental offices who apply the fee to charge the same amount of everyone. As for Morrow's bill, her dentist calls it an oversight, saying the fee should have been added to the estimate, because everyone is charged the same fee. The owner of Pristine Dental says all patients with an email on file are sent an explanation of the new fee before the appointment. Morrow says she get email updates but says she never received such an email. Some insurers do cover the PPE fee. 1981
