The crude oil crash just got worse.US oil prices plummeted nearly 7% on Tuesday to .43 a barrel. That marks the cheapest closing price since late October 2017.The latest deep selloff coincided with more mayhem on Wall Street. The Dow shed more than 600 points on Tuesday as fears about slowing earnings and economic growth deepen."In times of crises, all assets correlate," said Matt Smith, director of commodity research at ClipperData. "Crude has gotten caught up in the flight from equities."In the span of just seven weeks, crude has gone from spiking to nosediving into a bear market. Fears of a new supply glut and weakening demand have wiped out 30% of its value since hitting a four-year high of a barrel in early October.Crude has sold off by about 7% twice in the past week. The November 13 decline of 7.1% was the worst in three years.Beyond the stock market tumble, energy analysts saw few new reasons for the energy plunge."Oil traders are overwhelmed by bearish news," said Clay Seigle, managing director of oil at Genscape. "The broad selloff in equities has traders concerned about the possibility of an economic slowdown, which could reduce demand for oil products."One new development may have also helped weigh on oil prices. President Donald Trump signaled on Tuesday he won't punish Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for the death of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi."It could very well be that the Crown Prince had knowledge of this tragic event -- maybe he did and maybe he didn't!" Trump said in a statement. Energy traders may be interpreting the White House comments on US-Saudi ties as a sign that the kingdom won't aggressively cut oil production to support the market. Trump has repeatedly urged Saudi Arabia and OPEC not to do anything that will lift prices."If we broke with them I think your oil prices would go through the roof," Trump told reporters at the White House Tuesday. He also said he was "not going to destroy the economy of our country" over the murder of Saudi journalist and Washington Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi.OPEC is scheduled to meet next month in Vienna to weigh a potential output shift."You've got to think OPEC will be looking to make a sizable cut to try to reign in supplies and find a floor for prices here," said ClipperData's Smith. Not long ago, OPEC was under pressure to ramp up output in a bid to avoid 0 oil. Traders feared a supply shortage caused by the Trump administration's sanctions on Iran, the world's fifth biggest oil producer. However, the Trump administration took a softer approach on Iran than it initially signaled. Temporary waivers were granted to China, India and other buyers.By that point, Saudi Arabia, Russia and the United States had already ramped up output, leaving the market with a potential glut. US production has been especially strong, driven by the shale boom in the Permian Basin of West Texas. US output alone is expected to spike by 2.1 million barrels per day in 2018.At the same time, the global growth worries spooking Wall Street threatens to eat into demand. The International Energy Agency warned last week of "relatively weak" demand for oil in Europe and advanced Asian countries as well as a "slowdown" in India, Brazil and Argentina."The outlook for the global economy has deteriorated," the IEA wrote.The-CNN-Wire 3361

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued new guidance that recent studies have indicated that cloth masks offer more protection against the coronavirus than previously thought.Previous guidance suggested that masks were best used for preventing the spread of the virus. The CDC now believes that masks are effective for both stopping the spread and reception of the virus. The CDC said on Tuesday that multi-layer cloth masks can both block up to 50 to 70% of fine droplets and particles and limit the forward spread of those that are not captured. Overall, cloth masks offer up to 80% blockage in human experiments. The CDC’s analysis found that cloth masks offer comparable protection as surgical masks.“Studies demonstrate that cloth mask materials can also reduce wearers’ exposure to infectious droplets through filtration, including filtration of fine droplets and particles less than 10 microns,” the CDC’s guidance said. “The relative filtration effectiveness of various masks has varied widely across studies, in large part due to variation in experimental design and particle sizes analyzed. Multiple layers of cloth with higher thread counts have demonstrated superior performance compared to single layers of cloth with lower thread counts, in some cases filtering nearly 50% of fine particles less than 1 micron.”The guidance says that mandatory mask wearing can help prevent the need to implement economic shutdowns.“Adopting universal masking policies can help avert future lockdowns, especially if combined with other non-pharmaceutical interventions such as social distancing, hand hygiene, and adequate ventilation,” the CDC said.In an interview with Andrea Mitchell of MSNBC, Dr. Anthony Fauci said that wearing masks is “two-way street.”"Recent data has now shown that as a matter of fact, there's also the added benefit to protect you from droplets and virus that's coming your way," Fauci said Tuesday on MSNBC."“You protect others," he added. "Their masks protect you. And your mask also protects you."In a separate interview on Tuesday, Fauci said that shut downs can be avoided.“We are not talking about shutting down,” Fauci told CNN’s Jake Tapper. “There is always that misunderstanding when we talk about public health measures. We are not talking about shutting down. We are talking about the four or five things I talk about all the time, wearing mask universally, keeping a distance, avoiding congregate settings indoors over outdoors and washing your hands.”Editor's note: A previous version of this story said "masks were best used for spreading the virus" when it should have said "masks were best used for preventing the spread of the virus." That has since been corrected. 2729
The entertainment world is still reeling from the loss of Chadwick Boseman, who died on Friday at the age of 43. Boseman had reportedly been privately fighting colon cancer since 2016, meaning some of his most iconic roles — including those in films like Black Panther, Marshall and 21 Bridges — were likely filmed between grueling chemo treatments. In the face of such an insurmountable loss, doctors and medical professionals hope that Boseman's cancer battle can shine a light on the dangers of colon cancer in young and middle-aged people and encourage them to undergo annual screenings.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, colon cancer is currently the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. In 2017, more than 50,000 people died of the disease. And while colon cancer is most common in people 50 years and older, researchers say cases among younger people are on the rise.Researchers say that doctors have been able to catch the disease early in older people because of a push for increased screenings, but they're still at a loss for why the disease is increasing in young people — though rising rates of obesity may be a factor.Furthermore, Boseman's death is highlighting the rates of colon cancer in Black Americans — according to the American Cancer Society, Black people have the highest rates of colorectal cancer of any racial or ethnic group in the U.S.But what are the symptoms of the disease?According to the American Cancer Society, colon cancer typically presents with:Change of bowel habitsFeeling the need to go, but not feeling relief afterRectal bleeding with bright red bloodBlood in the stool making it look dark brown or blackCramping or abdominal painWeakness or fatigueUnintended weight lossWhile those symptoms don't necessarily guarantee a cancer diagnosis, the American Cancer Society recommends anyone with those symptoms visit a doctor. The Mayo Clinic adds that the following could leave a person with a higher risk of colon cancer:Old age (50 and above)Race factors (Black men are 24% more likely to develop colon cancer than white men, and Black men die 47% more likely to die of the disease than white men)History of colon tumors or polypsInflammatory intestinal conditions, like ulcerative colitis or Chron's diseaseFamily history of colon cancerA diet low in fiber and high in fatSedentary lifestyleDiabetesObesitySmoking/alcohol useHistory of radiation treatments in the abdomen 2468
