This time around though, many franchises like Samynathan's are offering parents a helping hand by providing assistance with a student's distance learning and provide some coding fun on the side."We can offer a STEM-based learning where they can learn coding, robotics, and they can do academics, homework,” Samynathan said. “If they’re going to cover a subject at school, we do it prior so they have a better understanding in doing that particular subject.”Some Code Ninja centers, like the one in Los Alamitos, California, sent out a survey to parents. They're taking about hiring an elementary school teacher to help proctor the learning so parents can work and kids can stay on task in their classroom while learning online. It's something that Nina Foster, mom to an 11-year-old in San Diego, is considering.“Preston is anxious to do more things on the outside again we may go back to doing one hour in the studio one at home, something like that,” Foster said.So far, Preston has kept up his coding skills through the center's virtual program and he's excelled.“He’s almost through the program,” Foster said. “He’s on the purple level -- it goes up to black just like karate. Once you get to the black level, you create your own app. From there, they’re joking that he could become a junior sensei until he’s old enough to work there.”Samynathan says Code Ninjas helps develop that out-of-the-box thinking."This is the best time for kids to get equipped with coding technological skills, they always want their tablet, they’re always playing games. It sounded like a really good position with a lot of possibilities of growth within the company. It just seemed like something I was looking for,” said Martin.He received a contract and was assigned a project. The company, Gap Systems LLC, was moving their offices to Baltimore and needed him to procure new equipment. Since he wasn’t full-time just yet, he’d have to purchase the laptops with his credit card and the company would reimburse him.“The next two weeks, I completed a total of three purchase orders and all of the payments were posting perfectly fine,” Martin said.A few weeks later, the charges suddenly reversed and Martin’s credit card balance exceeded ,000.After speaking with a bank representative, he learned the account owner had reported the charges as fraudulent.“They probably in some other way scammed someone else to get their account and routing number and then they gave me that information to pay my credit card,” said Martin.Martin feels he should’ve known better, but his excitement clouded his judgment. AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Faculty and staff at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan are being trained to fight active shooters in a unique way – by using hockey pucks. University police are conducting the training sessions, which were organized by the OU Union and the American Association of University Professors, to improve classroom safety for all. The use of hockey pucks allows those vulnerable to an active shooter attack to fight back with something heavy that will also cause a distraction, according to OU Police Chief Mark Gordon. "Hockey pucks provide the ability to be carried in briefcases or backpacks, are not considered a weapon and will meet the goal of distracting the shooter,” Gordon said. The OU Union has distributed hockey pucks to 800 of its members and will distribute an additional 1,700 pucks to students. "Part of the strategy for fighting is you need to create a distraction to give yourself time as a group in a classroom to rush the gunman so you can get your hands on the gun and take it away from the shooter," Gordon said.Although police and organizers find the pucks to be a good solution to the threat of a mass shooting, some students on campus disagree."I found it, at first, absurd," said Adam Kalajian, a third-year student at OU. "What good will it do? I mean, there’s an armed person coming in, why would you chuck a puck at them? What’s it going to do?
