It’s not hard to see why: Medicare Advantage plans often cover stuff that Medicare doesn’t, and most people don’t pay extra for it.But Medicare Advantage can be more expensive if you get sick because copays and other costs can be higher, says Katy Votava, president of Goodcare.com, a health care consultant for financial advisors and consumers.Unhappy customers who want to switch back to traditional Medicare may find they no longer qualify for the supplemental policies to help pay their medical bills, or that they would face prohibitively high premiums.“These are complicated products,” says Votava, author of “Making the Most of Medicare.” “They’re like nothing else, no other insurance that people encounter anywhere until they get to Medicare.”Medicare’s alphabet soupThe first hurdle many people face when deciding about Medicare coverage is simply understanding how the various parts fit together. Traditional Medicare, also known as original Medicare, has two parts:Part A covers hospitalization and is typically premium-free.Part B covers outpatient care, including doctor visits, and has a standard monthly premium of 4.60 for 2020, although higher-income people pay more.You can choose any doctor who accepts Medicare, and most do. The government pays health care providers directly.Part D is prescription drug coverage, which is provided by private insurers. The drugs that are covered and the amounts you pay out of pocket vary widely. Monthly premiums vary as well but average .74 in 2020.Traditional Medicare has deductibles, copays and coinsurance that can quickly add up. To cover these gaps, private insurers also offer supplemental plans known as Medigap. The average monthly Medigap premium in 2019 was 2, according to health insurance marketplace eHealth.com, but it can be lower or much higher depending on the plan, the insurer and the area where you live. The plans are known by letters A through N. As with traditional Medicare, you can choose any doctor who accepts Medicare.If you apply for a Medigap policy when you’re first eligible for Medicare, the insurer has to accept you and can’t charge more for preexisting conditions.How Medicare Advantage is differentMedicare Part C is Medicare Advantage. Rather than add to the other parts of Medicare, however, Medicare Advantage plans replace them. Insurers that offer Medicare Advantage are required to provide all the benefits of Part A and Part B, and most plans include Part D drug coverage as well. In addition, the plans typically cover certain expenses that Medicare doesn’t, such as hearing, vision and dental care.Most Medicare Advantage enrollees in 2020 paid no additional premiums for their coverage, other than their regular Part B premiums, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation, a health research group.How Medicare Advantage manages costsMedicare Advantage plans are similar to employer-provided group health insurance: To be covered, you typically must choose health care providers in the insurance company’s network. If you move out of the area or travel to other states, you may not be covered.The devil’s in the details, and Medicare Advantage plans have many, many details. The average Medicare beneficiary has access to 28 Medicare Advantage options, with varying networks, coverage, deductibles, copays and co-insurance, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. In general, though, Medicare Advantage costs less upfront and potentially more overall if you need lots of medical care. Many Medigap plans have higher upfront costs but cover most if not all of your expenses when you need care.If you want to switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another, you can do so during annual enrollment periods. But if you want to switch from Medicare Advantage to traditional Medicare, you often won’t have guaranteed access to a Medigap policy. That means the insurer may charge you more, exclude preexisting conditions for a time or not issue you a policy at all.That doesn’t mean Medicare Advantage plans are a poor choice — just a complicated one, says Tatiana Fassieux, a training specialist with California Health Advocates, a Medicare advocacy nonprofit. She recommends people contact their state health insurance assistance program, which can provide free, unbiased one-on-one counseling. AKRON, Ohio - The Akron Police Department is investigating a viral video that shows officers using a Taser on a man and punching him while he was on the ground during an arrest.The video, captured by a neighbor, shows one officer punching the man multiple times.Warning: The video below includes images and language that some users may find disturbing.Akron police said they saw the man, who they identified as 47-year-old Patrick King, coming out of a known drug house Sunday. They made an investigative stop while he was walking down the street.King gave false information about his identity, an Akron police official said. An officer tried to detain him and got a handcuff on one of his hands. King then resisted by trying to run away, pulling away, tensing up and refusing all verbal commands, the official said.A neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, captured the incident on video and posted it to Facebook – it’s since been shared over 3,000 times and viewed over 147,000 times.The neighbor felt the officers went too far."As soon as they put the one handcuff on him, that's when they got to throwing him around and slamming him and beating on him and stuff like that," he said.Akron police said they arrested King and charged him with tampering with evidence, resisting arrest, misrepresenting identity, drug paraphernalia and drug abuse. King also had an active warrant out of Cuyahoga County for a parole violation.Akron police said they have begun a use of force investigation into this incident. Akron officials have not identified the officers who were involved. Deputy Chief Jesse Leeser said King is 6-feet-4 and 220 pounds and the officers were winded trying to get him under control."Officers used force to include tasing, strikes and pressure points," Leeser said. "He was obviously actively fighting with these officers. The fight had gone to the ground. Not only did he have that handcuff as a weapon possibly, but the officers were also exposed. Allstate Insurance announced on Wednesday that they are planning to lay off 3,800 employees.In a press release, the company said the layoffs were part of a restructuring plan to lower costs.Allstate will make the cuts in the sales, claims, and support departments."Implementing this plan is difficult as we still deal with the impact of the pandemic but necessary to provide customers the best value," said Tom Wilson, Chair, President, and CEO of Allstate in the press release. (KGTV) - Neighbors are fearful and outraged at the idea a sexual predator could move in next door after running into a detective investigating the neighborhood.Tucked away in Alpine Heights is a quiet sprawling neighborhood with multiple cul-de-sacs."Most people don't even know we're here," three decade resident Gerry Brewster said.David Csik and his wife Katie moved in two years ago and describe the area as a kid's dream, filled with block parties, and get-togethers around the BBQ or the pool. They have two kids, a toddler son, and 6-month old baby girl."We moved to Alpine for the community and to send our children to the schools out here; it's all we've ever wanted," Katie said.December 14th, they say a neighbor approached someone walking around a vacant property next door and found out she was an investigator for the Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement Task Force (SAFE). "They're writing what they call a factual site assessment which they submit to the courts and they're looking to place a sexually violent predator right down the street," David said they were shocked. Katie was ready to get going, "my initial thought was we have to move."The neighborhood jumped into action, writing stacks of concerned letters to their representatives and investigators with the SAFE Task Force.Supervisor Dianne Jacob responded to their emails, saying in part, "At this time, the County has not been made aware of any recommendation to place a SVP at this location. When a SVP is being proposed for conditional release from a state hospital, a public notification is provided by law enforcement and a court hearing takes place before a SVP is placed in the community. I have consistently stood with the community in opposition and will continue to oppose the release of any SVP into our neighborhoods."She said in the email she also contacted the Attorney General and is waiting to hear back.The neighbors did not wait. They created a map showing dozens of children who either live in the vicinity or visit their grandparents daily. After sending the letters, and after SAFE conducted their investigation, the District Attorney did not take this address to court as a possibility for a reformed sexual predator.It was a relief to parents. "I would never have slept at night knowing someone like that was around here," Katie said.While this particular case was thrown out, neighbors want a secure future."What we want to see is this property off the map out of their database," David said.The San Diego District Attorney's website says, "The Department of State Hospitals reviews all possible housing locations within the county and recommends a specific placement to the court." The department states, "Staff examines existing searches for properties that were previously identified. Such information is used only as a starting point.
