SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego mother is responding to a disturbing video showing a woman screaming racial slurs and threats at her son, a black man, outside a downtown luxury apartment building early Tuesday morning.Shawni Crawley told 10News the incident occurred while her 29-year-old son, Rodney Jackson, was working as a security guard at the Pinnacle on The Park apartments located at 424 15th St. in San Diego's East Village neighborhood.The video, posted by Jackson's brother, doesn't clearly reveal the woman's identity. In his public Facebook post, his brother wrote: "A snippet of an incident with my brother and a racist white woman downtown San Diego!!! The woman told Jackson she didn't have a ride home and requested he call her a cab.While waiting in the reception area for the cab to arrive, the woman began insulting other tenants. Deputies asked the man to remove the cover to which he complied.On May 12 at Westview High School in the Torrey Highlands in San Diego's North County, a student's Snapchat's racist post spurred outrage among students and parents. In a screenshot shown to Team 10, the post from the student said: "god i really f------ wish the south won the civil war. i wish i had a f------- slave to do my work for me." At just 16-years-old, many teens today couldn't think of doing so.Alexa Mendes said she knew she had to cut the cord after recognizing that she was addicted to the likes, shares, and interactions online."It is difficult enough to try and manage our overwhelming lives already filled with extracurriculars, sports teams, clubs, honors societies, difficult classes, insane amounts of homework, the pressures of applying to prestigious universities, and an abundance of other expectations," Mendes writes. "On top of that, we are always thinking about our online profiles."So she curbed her online presence back. In doing so, she learned a lot and turned those lessons into a book: #Unsubscribed: How I am thriving in high school without social media (and you can, too)."It wasn't that difficult. It's something I'm passionate about since it's part of my life and my experience and story to tell," Mendes said.Now, Mendes' message isn't that teens should drop social media entirely. Instead, she hopes her story can help others strike a healthy balance."Over time, I realized that the key wasn’t to abolish my usage completely--it was all about becoming balanced and finding a way to use social media in moderation," she writes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman visiting San Diego to spend time with her daughter is dead after being struck by a car near San Diego State University Friday evening. San Diego Police Department says the woman was hit at the 4800 block of College Avenue just south of Montezuma Road in the College Area at approximately 7:45 p.m. The 48-year-old female victim was transported to an area hospital where she died. Police say the victim was not using a crosswalk when she was struck in the number two northbound lane of College Ave.The driver fled the scene according to SDPD but returned about an hour later.The driver is a 40-year-old female and detectives say they are still determining if this will continue to be classified as a hit-and-run.Police expect the intersection to be shut down for several hours. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A team of middle school students from Oak Valley Middle School in 4S Ranch has won a national competition in cybersecurity.Coached by Paul Johnson, a senior systems engineer at Northrop Grumman, the students learn how to catch and protect against hackers. During competitions, hackers attempt to breach networks, while the students try to identify and eject them. Called "CyberPatriot", the national championship was held in Baltimore, Maryland.The goal of the program is to get kids interested in potential careers in cybersecurity.The Poway Unified School District has CyberPatriot teams at Design 39 School and Del Norte High School, in addition to Oak Valley Middle School. 715
