NEW YORK, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said on Wednesday that China and the United States should positively carry out a large-scale economic and trade cooperation.When meeting celebrities from the U.S. economic and financial community, Wen said political and strategic mutual trust should be the precondition of such cooperation.Since the establishment of diplomatic ties 31 years ago, China and the United States have developed a lot more common interests than differences. Over the past three decades, the U.S. enterprises have altogether invested over 62.2 billion dollars in 58,000 projects in China, and in 2008 alone, their profits amounted to approximately 8 billion dollars, according to the official data provided by the Chinese government.Wen said the RMB exchange rate isn't responsible for the mounting U.S. trade deficits. The reason lies in the structure of Sino-U.S. investment and trade. Both countries should carry out a large-scale trade investment cooperation based on equality, mutual trust and mutual benefit.China has taken it as its national strategy to expand domestic demands, protect intellectual property rights and promote sustainable development, Wen said.Foreign companies in China have always enjoyed national treatment and are welcomed to play a more active role in boosting China's development, he added.During the discussion, participants from the U.S. side, including former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and former Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin, also called for closer cooperation between the two countries, adding that China is a stabilizing factor for global economic and financial system.They said the development of a sound U.S.-China economic and trade relationship would benefit both sides. TIANJIN, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Coca Cola, the world's largest beverage maker, will begin operations at its largest bottling plant in China, a 900-million-yuan (132-million-US dollar) investment in Luohe City of central China's Henan province, by the end of October this year."We are very positive and committed to our growth here in China," said Glenn Jordan, president of Coca Cola Pacific Region, during an exclusive interview with Xinhua while attending the fourth Summer Davos forum held in north China's port city of Tianjin, on Monday.The soft-drink giant already operates 39 plants in China. It opened three new plants in Jiangxi Province, Hubei Province and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region last year. Also, it now has two factories under construction, including the largest one in Henan and the other in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.Statistics from the company showed its investment in the new plant in Hubei Province has reached 600 million yuan, while the cost of the two-phase project in Jiangxi Province added up to 250 million yuan.Jordan said these are all parts of Coca Cola's three-year, 2-billion-US dollar investment plan in China announced last March, and the project is now "well on track" in terms of infrastructure, marketing and product development.Jordan believes the expansion was good for both sides. "On average, we are hiring around 10 people per day in the Coca Cola system and putting almost 1,000 coolers per day in the market."The investment package also includes a 90-million-US dollar innovation and research center in Shanghai. HANGZHOU, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 1,000 graves were damaged in a mud flow that hit east China's Zhejiang Province Saturday after torrential rains, caused by tropical storm Meranti, triggered landslides, a debris flow and delayed flights.However, no causalities have been reported as of 11 p.m. after Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang, was hit by nine landslides and a debris flow, said Zhejiang flood control officials.After the mud flow damaged 952 graves at the Meinushan Cemetery in Binjiang District, the district government ordered work crews to relocate exposed remains to safe places and reinforce existing graves, said officials.Torrential rains have been pounding the city since 4 a.m. Officials reported that by 7 a.m. the rainfall has reached 232 mm, a rarely seen accumulation in only three hours.In Shanghai, more than 300 outgoing flights, both domestic and international, were delayed for more than 30 minutes as of 5 p.m. at Shanghai Pudong International Airport.However, no flights have yet been canceled, according to airport security staff.Also, inbound flights have not been seriously affected, with fewer than 10 flights being delayed prior to landing, they said.Additionally, flights were not affected at the other civilian airport, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport.

BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Property prices in 70 major Chinese cities rose 9.1 percent year on year in September, the lowest growth rate so far this year, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Friday.The rate was down 0.2 percentage points from the 9.3-percent increase in August, but prices were up 0.5 percent month on month, a statement on the NBS website said.New home prices climbed 11.3 percent year on year in September, up 0.5 percent from August.Prices for second-hand homes were up 6.2 percent from a year earlier, a rise of 0.5 percent from August.Real estate investment continued to expand in the first three quarters, with the total standing at 3.4 trillion yuan (511.4 billion U.S. dollars), up 36.4 percent from the same period in 2009, the statement said.The property price growth rate peaked this year at 12.8 percent in April.

SHANGHAI, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Wang Lihua sent her son to a Shanghai rehabilitation center for the disabled when he was three years old. Now about to turn six, her son, who has cerebral palsy, a neurological disorder that permanently affect body movement and muscle coordination, has regained use of some parts of his body."When he first came to the center, he was not able to crawl, kneel, or stand. Now he has not only learned these abilities, but also learned to walk, even just for a short distance," Wang said.Opened in 1999, the Shanghai Rehabilitation and Vocational Training Center for the Disabled specializes in medical, educational, engineering, and vocational rehabilitation for the disabled.Feeling timid and afraid of the strange new environment at first, Wang's son now very much likes the therapists at the center."The therapists here work very hard, since they provide training to children with cerebral palsy one at a time from dawn to dusk. The children have a busy day as well. My son spends his day either having meals or training," Wang said.The hard work has paid off. Her son has learned by heart many lines of a nursery rhyme and Chinese poem, as well as addition and subtraction.Largely satisfied with the results of the rehabilitation, Wang said she was thinking about sending her son to a regular primary school next year.According to Xu Shenglin, the center's vice director, the center treats children suffering from cerebral palsy or autism with a combination of therapies such as acupuncture, massage and sports, and every child with cerebral palsy is treated in a one-on-one rehabilitation program which has an effective rate of 95 percent.The center also runs a course for parents of children with cerebral palsy to teach them about home rehabilitation.Monthly fees for each child with cerebral palsy at the center is 3,000 yuan (495 U.S. Dollars), with 60 percent covered by health insurance. Families with children with cerebral palsy receive an annual subsidy of 10,000 yuan from the Shanghai municipal government.In Shanghai, the economic center of China, there are 942,000 disabled people, accounting for 5.29 of the city's population. The city's government has spent about 4.4 billion yuan in aid programs for the disabled since 2007, which has helped set up over 2,000 aid institutions and allows 100,000 disabled people to receive subsistence and other kinds of government subsidies.Under a program that offers health and medical services at home, some 130,000 disabled people have received basic rehabilitation services and 160,000 have received health check-up service.The government in Shanghai has also financed at-home care for 15,000 unemployed and severely disabled people who are not committed to any institutions or do not receive any subsidy for day care.In China, the rights of the disabled have always been a priority of the government.
