NEW YORK CITY — A woman was seriously injured Monday night when a man unexpectedly pushed her into a train pulling into a Manhattan subway station, according to the NYPD.Police said the shoving happened around 9:30 p.m. at the West 4th Street-Washington Square subway station near Sixth Avenue in Greenwich Village.The 55-year-old woman was standing on the platform when the man suddenly pushed her into a moving train pulling into the station, officials said.The victim hit the side of the train and then fell back onto the platform, police said.She was rushed to a nearby hospital in serious condition. NEWTOWN, Connecticut — Elementary students at a Connecticut school where a mass shooting took the lives of 20 students and six adults in 2012 went home early today because of a bomb threat.Police said they believe the threat made toward Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown was a hoax but cleared the school as a precaution. NEW YORK (AP) — An annual film retreat held in the Colorado mountains has been canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic. The Telluride Film Festival is one of the fall movie season's top launching pads. Organizers announced Tuesday that the festival's 47th edition, scheduled for Labor Day weekend, has been scuttled due to COVID-19. Through much of the summer, Telluride had clung to hopes that cancellation wouldn't be necessary. But with infections spiking throughout much of the South and West, they made what they called a "heartbreaking and unanimous" decision. NEW YORK — Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the passage of legislation that prohibits domestic abusers from possessing handguns and long guns as part of his 2018 Women's Agenda.Previously, there was a loophole in which domestic abusers only had to surrender handguns, they must now surrender all firearms."The recent wave of mass shootings is horrifying, and the federal government's failure to act on any form of meaningful gun safety laws is unconscionable," Governor Cuomo said. "New York is once again leading the way to prevent gun violence, and with this common sense reform, break the inextricable link between gun violence and domestic violence.This legislation builds on our gun laws -- already the strongest in the nation-- to make New York safer and stronger." New York law previously prohibited the possession of firearms for those convicted of a felony or a limited number of misdemeanor "serious" offenses. This legislation expands the list of "serious" crimes, which will lead to the loss of a gun license and the surrender of all firearms for those who are convicted.This legislation will also restrict any individual with an arrest warrant from obtaining or renewing a firearm license which was previously not the case.Governor Cuomo cites the fact that in nine of the last 10 mass shootings, the shooter had an existing record of committing or threatening violence against women or harassing them. 1447

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Louisiana is suing the state of California over its decision to ban the import and sale of alligator products, saying the ban will hurt an important Louisiana industry and ultimately could hurt the state’s wetlands.In a lawsuit filed Thursday, Louisiana said the economy surrounding alligators has played a key role in bringing back the American alligator population and is an important factor in protecting wetlands and other species besides alligators that depend on the wetlands.“California has nevertheless attempted to destroy the market for American alligator products notwithstanding the fact that no such alligators live in California,” the lawsuit says.According to The Times-Picayune/the New Orleans Advocate, California banned alligator skins and meats in the 1970s but repeatedly issued exceptions that allowed sales. The newspaper reports that the most recent exemption expires on Jan. 1 of next year, and this time California’s legislature did not pass another exemption. The newspaper reports the alligator ban was backed by a coalition of animal rights and environmental groups.Louisiana said in its lawsuit that because most of the state’s coastal habitat is privately owned, the state does not have direct control over how it is managed. But the alligator industry provides economic incentives for landowners to take steps to protect marshlands that serve as habitat for the alligators.The state argues that if California’s ban goes into effect, “landowners will be forced to greatly reduce or cease their erosion control efforts because they will be unable to economically sustain those efforts, resulting in irreparable harm to their property as well as harm to Louisiana’s sovereign environmental interests in wetland preservation.”According to the lawsuit, California’s large economy often means that their product standards become de facto national standards so California’s alligator ban will have effects in other states. Louisiana says the upcoming ban is already having effects up and down the supply chain with the price of alligator hides decreasing, and alligator farmers reducing their investments.According to Louisiana Wildlife & Fisheries, over 300,000 alligators are harvested every year from both farm and wild sources. 2282
