SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego restaurant group is turning to an old trend to try to make it through the latest shutdown order. The order, which went into effect Monday, relegated restaurants to takeout and delivery only, decimating their bottom line and forcing them to cut jobs and reduce hours."Right now the way it's been, it's not profitable," said Alex Navarrete, general manager of Karina's restaurant group. "We're giving everybody one shifts, two shifts, but what is that going to do?"Karina's restaurant group has nine establishments around the county. Prior to the pandemic, it had dozens of workers at each location. Now, it has four workers on the clock at anytime at each. "They all want to work, I just don't have hours now, since we're only doing takeout," Navarrete said. Navarette is now trying to go above and beyond for his company and his employees - even as his options are limited. Four of the group's restaurants -- two in the Otay Ranch mall, and others in Chula Vista and La Jolla -- will try to take advantage of their parking lots. They're essentially turning into car hops, where patrons get their food delivered to their cars and eat in the parking lot. "This would be a perfect time to get that cobwebs off the motor home and bring it out, bring the family out," he said. Curbside pickup for restaurant food is nothing new, but the Karina's group is eyeing making it more festive, with potentiality live music or a DJ outdoors at its two restaurants in the Otay Ranch Mall - Karina's Mexican Seafood and Savoie Italian Eatery. Navaraette said by staying and eating in the car, guests could order their food in courses, so the tacos and other entrees don't get soggy. And he said staff would be able to throw away their trash for them.He said if this works out well, he hopes to increase hours and shifts. 1844

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Adapting to new restrictions is now routine for businesses in the age of coronavirus. The latest set of rules handed down by Governor Newsom is not sitting well with salon owner Shanelle Cedeno.“Now it just feels like a target," Cedeno says.As hospitals become overwhelmed with surging cases, ICU capacity is the state’s newest metric for tightening restrictions.RELATED: Gov. Newsom: New California stay-at-home order triggered by ICU capacityOnce available capacity falls below 15%, only schools that have received waivers can stay open along with critical infrastructure.Retail can stay open at 20% capacity and restaurants will be restricted to take out and delivery. Bars wineries, salons, and barbershops will have to close their doors completely.Cedeno says her "Beautiful You" salon in Barrio Logan is already implementing every safety measure asked of them.RELATED: San Diego hospitals react to Newsom’s regional stay-at-home order“Everybody who comes in is one on one, how we run our business is very clean very sanitized,” said Cedeno. She says the new rules are unfair since the county’s numbers indicate salons and barbershops only make up 2.5% of community exposure settings.“A lot of these cases are just coming from people’s personal lives and not following the rules outside of where they come into businesses,” said Cedeno. The timeline is still uncertain for when salons will have to close. Until then, Cedeno says they’re moving up appointments before it’s too late.“We are making our reach-outs to have them come in today and tomorrow,” said Cedeno. “We’re San Diego, we got this. We’re all in this together.” 1655

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A thief with a U-Haul truck and young accomplice made off with a haul at a home in Rancho San Diego.Sue Sobke and her husband returned to their home on Calle Deposito Saturday night and found their patio sliding door shattered. "Just a violation. A lot of fear and panic," said Sobke.Inside, two rooms were ransacked. The jewelry box in her bedroom was emptied of hundreds of pieces. Many of the piece were sentimental, one in particular. Her father, a World War II veteran, bought her mother a gold ring while in China after the war. Both of her parents have passed. "Felt close to her ... means my mom and how much I loved her. How much my dad loved her ... now it's gone," said Sobke. Her mission to get it back could depend on a piece of surveillance video. The video shows a U-Haul truck making a turn near her home. Neighbors spotted it parked in front of her home. "They saw a man in my backyard, in his 40s, fit and wearing a hat," said Sobke.Sitting in the truck was a boy about 12 years old."A neighbor saw the boy in the truck listening to music. He waved at him and drove off," said Sobke.Whether the boy was used as a lookout or diversion, Sobke can only shake her head."It's clever. I'll admit that. No one would suspect a young boy waiting for his father. It's horrible, training him," said Sobke. The training may not be over. Detectives told Sobke that a U-Haul truck has been seen near other break-ins in the area. "For about three weeks, they've been chasing this U-Haul truck," said Sobke.A sheriff's department spokesperson says the burglary has not yet been linked to any other cases. 1631

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Amid fears of post-election unrest, parishioners at San Diego's oldest church are meeting the possibility of violence with prayer. It's the morning of the election and Peggy Stolberg is hoping to cast a vote for peace — through prayer."It always seems like prayers are the answers to many things," said Stolberg.Stolberg spent part of her morning in the sanctuary of the Mission San Diego de Alcala, her church for the last 35 years."I pray for the unity of our country. I'm also here to pray for non-violent situations after the results come out," said Stolberg.Peggy is one of many — a few at a time — expected to show up by the end of the day, says Father Bill Springer."A little bit of anxiety," said Father Springer.Father Springer believes this was the first-ever all-day prayer vigil for election peace in the history of the 251-year-old mission."We just felt there was a threat of violence around the election, because of the divisiveness of our society and previous violence in the streets," said Father Springer.Father Springer says to combat that, he's calling upon the power of prayer."Aside from the efficacy of the prayer itself, it also alerts people and puts on their mind that this is something people should be concerned about ... and spread to their neighbors and others that they should have a spirit of peacefulness and spirit of respect for others," said Father Springer. 1419
