SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The holiday shopping season is here and you probably have a long list of presents to buy that will set you back hundreds, even thousands of dollars. But you might think twice about overspending on Black Friday or Cyber Monday when you take a closer look at the FIRE movement to help you make it in San Diego. Amon Browning and his wife Christina were recently featured on ABC News. The San Francisco couple just retired, and they’re only 40 years old. “I was making ,000 a year, and Christina was making about ,000 a year,” says Amon Browning. In just eight years, they managed to save million by investing 70 percent of their income through a method called FIRE, which is short for Financial Independence, Retire Early. Mah is the Community Liaison for a local FIRE Chapter in San Diego called Choose FI, as in Financial Independence. They gathered to learn what it takes, mostly significant financial sacrifices, to retire early. “The American Dream is getting a college degree, and this job, and this white picket fence. But all of that has this huge debt behind it,” claims a woman interviewed for the documentary.The goal of the film is to get people thinking about where they spend their money. “The consumerism culture is harmful. It really hurts people,” says another man as video of a massive Black Friday rush appears on the big screen.Ultimately, the documentary portrays how consumerism and marketing place so many Americans on the edge of bankruptcy. “We are spending money we don’t have to buy things we don’t need to impress people we don’t know,” says another man in the documentary in an ominous tone. Nearly half, 44 percent, have credit card debt, and only 38 percent have an emergency fund. Those in the Choose FI community are the opposite. “People in the FI Community have a savings rates upwards of 40 percent,” says Mah. Meaning nearly half of their income is going into savings. Everyone in the movement is different in their quest to save and retire early; there’s no one specific way to do it. “Some things that most people cut: really expensive cable, really expensive phone bills, streaming services,” adds Mah. For others, it’s more drastic, like downsizing a house or giving up an expensive car for a used one. Everything is always going to be out of your control.”“Even if I don’t reach financial independence, retire early, I think I will be better for trying than not to try at all,” says Mah. The FIRE movement takes a great deal of sacrifice. To be successful like the Brownings, you must reduce spending, pay off your debts, and maximize your savings by setting aside 40 to 60 percent of your income. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The community is coming together for the family of a San Diego mother of two who died this week while acting as a surrogate for another family.Michelle Reaves was helping a family have children of their own, according to a GoFundMe set up to help her family. It was her second surrogacy for the same family when complications arose and she died while giving birth, the campaign explained.The baby Reaves was carrying survived.Reaves leaves behind two children, Gage and Monroe, and her husband, Chris.The organizer of the GoFundMe campaign is hoping the community will "be there for Michelle’s family like they would for us.""I can’t even begin to imagine what her husband Chris and her two babies are going through so I want to start this page to help raise money for help with the kids, for Chris as they all adjust, funeral services, or anything at all to make it as easy as we can on them," wrote organizer Jaime Herwehe. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The National Weather Service says that conditions are in place for a La Ni?a weather pattern in the fall and winter of 2020-21. That could bring warmer, drier than usual weather to San Diego over the next few months.By definition, La Ni?a happens when the water along the equator is colder than usual. That pushes the jet stream farther north and directs storms away from the Pacific Southwest region of the United States.Because of that, Southern California typically sees less rain during La Ni?a years."What that means for everyone is that our winters can be variable, meaning they can be all or nothing," explains National Weather Service Meteorologist Alex Tardy. "It doesn't necessarily result in more or less rain, though. You just have a very inconsistent winter in general with a La Ni?a pattern like we're seeing developed now."The numbers bear that out. According to the San Diego County Water Authority, San Diego averages 10.34 inches of rain every year, with most of it falling from December through February.But in La Ni?a years, the rainfall is usually below average. During La Ni?a in 2018, San Diego only saw 3.34 inches. A La Ni?a in 2017 brought 12.73 inches. La Ni?as in 2017 and 2012 got 8.18 and 7.90 inches of rain, respectively."The bulk of the historical cases have been somewhat below average," says Dan Cayan from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. "It's 10 to maybe 30% below what we would normally achieve in those in those core winter months."That's bad news for firefighters across California. Already this year, the state has set records for wildfire disasters, with 7,982 wildfires burning more than 3.6 million acres. A dry, warm fall and winter will prolong wildfire season."That's not a real welcome signal for us here in Southern California, particularly after this extended dry period and heatwaves," says Cayan. "A wetter winter this next year would have been a welcome relief. But the roll of the statistical dice right now does not look like they're in our favor."Tardy puts it more bluntly."We are a tinderbox," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The cities of Escondido and La Mesa are taking measures to help restaurants expand outdoor dining after a rollback of indoor dining in the county due to surging coronavirus cases.Starting Friday, Escondido will reduce traffic to one lane in each direction on Grand Avenue, between Maple Street and Juniper St., to allow restaurants to expand temporary outdoor seating.
