SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As the unofficial start of summer came and went, one thing that many San Diegans were without was the use of community pools.Reopening community and apartment pools is listed in San Diego County's pilot program to phase into California's Stage 3 of reopening early.The county has submitted a letter petitioning the state to be allowed to enter the pilot program, but has yet to hear back.RELATED: Is it safe to swim in pools this summer amid COVID-19? The agency says currently, "there is no evidence that the virus that causes COVID-19 can be spread to people through the water in pools, hot tubs, spas, or water play areas. Proper operation and maintenance (including disinfection with chlorine and bromine) of these facilities should inactivate the virus in the water."But for San Diego County, health officials are leaning on the state for the go ahead on pools. It’s the gathering of individuals across different households for extended periods," says Sweeney.The county's public health orders allow for water activity in the ocean, bays, and lakes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- COVID-19 outreach in the Latino community is getting a boost after San Diego County partnered with promotoras to help with contact tracing. Promotoras, which literally means promoters, are bilingual community health workers. The goal is to lower the high number of COVID-19 cases among Latinos in the county. Latinos and Hispanics make up almost 63% of COVID-19 cases in the county, but Latinos make up only 34% of the population.The promotoras are members of the communities where they will be working. The county announced the partnership at the beginning of August and now the promotoras are out in the community helping with contact tracing. The promotoras will work in underserved communities and Latino neighborhoods. ABC 10News spoke to two promotoras working with South Bay Community Services. They are getting ready to start on September 1st. In total, 17 promotoras with the organization will start on that day. They've all received hours of training and are certified contact tracers. The promotoras will have the task of reaching out to the close contacts of positive COVID-19 cases. The contact is made over the phone or via email and text and the promotoras will ask things about testing and if they're presenting any symptoms. The county's partnership also includes promotoras from San Diego State and will include promotoras that speak other languages like Tagalog and Arabic. 1421

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County law enforcement officials say overdose deaths from fentanyl have sharply increased since last year.The San Diego County District Attorney Office said in the first six months of 2020, there have been 203 fentanyl-related deaths: 119 have been confirmed and 84 are pending confirmation. The victims range in age from 17 to 66 years old.In all of 2019, there were 152 fentanyl-related overdose deaths in the county."This alarming uptick demonstrates that dealers continue cutting various illegal drugs with fentanyl and now more than ever it’s a recipe for death," said District Attorney Summer Stephan. "The public needs to be aware of the danger of using any controlled substance even if packaged like a harmless medicinal pill. Higher overdose numbers tell us there’s likely more product on the street in San Diego that may be laced with deadly fentanyl. I’m urging you to share this potentially life-saving message with your loved ones today."The DA's office says it is prosecuting several cases, including: In January, a 28-year-old smoked a powdery substance given to him by a friend. His mother found him unresponsive in the living room of her home. He was pronounced dead from a fentanyl overdose.In February, a 20-year-old suffering from anxiety, consumed a counterfeit oxycodone pill before going to bed. His roommates found him dead in the morning from a fentanyl overdose.In May, a 19-year-old purchased two Percocets from a friend. He consumed both pills and subsequently died from an overdose. He had fentanyl in his system at the time of his deathFentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine and up to 50 times more potent than heroin, according to officials. Even in doses as little as two milligrams, the drug is lethal for most people. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As we continue to work through the pandemic, a couple of Carmel Valley kids are working to spread “some good news” for San Diegans. Brothers Zach and Asher Swazey are putting together their own newscasts.Its called “SGN San Diego.” The newscast is filled with good news.“You want to have something that will affect people in a positive way,” says 13-year-old Zach.The brothers are now working on episode two. They say it was a lot of work putting everything together.“It took us 2-3 weeks,” says ten-year-old Asher. “We went through multiple stages of editing. It took a little of time to make the script and film.”The boys say they were inspired to start SGN San Diego after watching actor and filmmaker John Krasinski on Youtube.The boys say their video is getting more views, but their headline is to make people feel good.“When you’re making a YouTube channel, it’s not about how many likes you get or how many subscribers, it’s how it affects people.”The brothers say their parents are also a big help. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border officials seized more than 10 tons of marijuana hidden behind a cargo shipment at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry this week.At about 9 a.m. Monday, an agent with U.S. Customs and Border Protection was inspecting a truck with a manifested shipment of "plastic garment hangers." The vehicle was referred to a secondary inspection where an x-ray machines would continue the inspection.During the secondary inspection, officers detected an anomaly which prompted another examination this time with a canine. The truck, trailer, shipment, and narcotics were seized by CBP.“The ability of CBP officers to interdict contraband at the port of entry is a perfect example of CBP’s efforts to secure our border,” Joseph Misenhelter, Officer in Charge at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, said. “CBP officers prevented over 10 tons of marijuana from entering our community.” 1529
