DENVER, Colorado — Candidates and political parties are desperate to reach voters as Election Day approaches but one method feels a little more personal. Text messages are being used to target voters, and if you've been inundated, you're not alone. "But it is a little kind of like how do you have my phone number," said Andrew Drysdale, a voter who called the texts unsettling. Colorado Secretary of State Wayne Williams said his office has received numerous phone calls and emails about the text messages. Some of his own staff members have also received them."They're allowed to do it as long as they're following the law," said Williams.The FCC has specific rules about campaign-related robocalls and texts, stating they cannot be sent to a cell phone "without the called party's prior express consent." "There are ways that they use to try and avoid some of the legal restrictions on it by having a live person as one of the steps, so it's not automated," said Williams.On top of that, he adds the Do Not Call Registry does not apply to political calls.Williams says you can visit govotecolorado.com to make sure your cell phone number is not attached to your voter registration. Even if you take those steps to ensure your phone number is not included, it might not be enough to stop aggressive political groups from tracking you down. DEL MAR — The coronavirus eliminated the 2020 San Diego County fair, and racing season went on with no fans. Now, the state-owned fairgrounds has laid off more than half of its staff and has asked Sacramento for million in bailout money."They need a new vision for the future and they need it desperately to solve their financial problems," said Del Mar Councilman Dwight Worden.Worden said affordable housing is an ideal solution. The city wants to team up with the fairgrounds to build upwards of 51 affordable homes on the property. On Monday, the council could approve a formal memo to submit to the fairgrounds on its vision.As it stands, Del Mar has no affordable housing and as such faces steep state penalties - including fines, lawsuits, and even loss of development control."In a place like Del Mar, where the ground costs a million dollars an inch, anything where we have to buy land is immediately not affordable," Worden said.The idea to put housing has been talked about for years. Most recently, in June, a Los Angeles-based developer proposed to put modular homes on the property to temporarily shelter the homeless during the outbreak, but pulled the project after community opposition."That was a hornet's nest," Worden said. "We've been telling them 'look, let's work on this long term affordable housing, where we get credit and we know how to help you do that successfully.'"Worden said this would be different, because it would give people such as fairgrounds workers, emergency medical technicians, teachers, and restaurant servers to permanently live close to where they work.Worden says the city has picked out five locations on the fairgrounds, mostly around the perimeter.The cost is still not clear, but Del Mar may ask Solana Beach the city of San Diego to participate, and see if they can get partial credit for their housing requirements.Del Mar must built 163 new housing units by 2029. DESCANSO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Firefighters Wednesday battled a house fire near Descanso that spread to nearby brush. According to Cal Fire, the blaze started on the 24000 block of Sherilton Valley Road in the area of Cedar Creek. Part of the home became involved in the fire before flames spread to nearby brush, scorching two acres. RELATED: SDG&E prepares for Public Safety Power Shutoff as Santa Ana winds approachCal Fire said fuel in the area was light and flashy and that the blaze had a moderate rate of spread. Crews were able to stop the forward rate of spread of the fire after 4 p.m. The blaze comes less than 24 hours before Santa Ana winds are set to begin in San Diego County, ushering in high fire danger. 726
DENVER — In the wake of the Black Lives Matter Movement and calls to end systemic racism, many have called on white people to call out discrimination and harassment. A Denver woman says she did just that when she recorded a white woman following and questioning a Black man in a neighborhood near Cranmer Park.Beth, who did not want to be identified by her last name, said she recorded the interaction on Sunday evening and shared it on social media. The video has been viewed thousands of times.The video shows a white woman trailing a Black man walking in a Denver-area neighborhood and asking him questions about a picture. The man asked the woman why she was interrogating him, and the woman later loses her temper."You f**khead, get out of here," the woman said.At one point, Beth interjected and told the woman to leave the man alone."He's not bothering you," she said.Beth said the woman was harassing the man, which is why she recorded the encounter."I just want people to know that it's happening," Beth said. "I don't want people to have an excuse for ignorance anymore. Racism is still real, it's still everywhere, and I'm a white person with a camera, so when I see it, I have to call it out."The woman in the video did not wish to give an interview on camera or be identified, but she told Scripps station KMGH in Denver that she saw the man take several pictures of her home, and was worried they could be used for a crime. When asked if she would have reacted differently if a white person were taking photos, the woman said race didn't play a role in her questioning. She said she just wanted to know why the man took pictures of her home.During the confrontation, the man began to walk away, but the woman continued to follow him. He finally told the woman that he did not want to talk with her and said, "Have a nice day."Neighborhood resident Matt Tedeschi has lived in the area most of his life and walks his dog in the area."(I'm) shocked that not everyone is as accepting as they should be, just for someone walking down the street and question them when they have no right to question them like that," Tedeschi said.The woman in the video claims she had every right to question why the man took pictures of her home. Beth argued that it's a beautiful neighborhood and that photos are common."He is in a public space, he took a picture; people do that all the time," Beth said. "It's a movement right now where we need to prove that Black people are harassed for no good reason. It's a time where we need to have evidence to back up what we are saying."Beth said she spoke with the man after the encounter, and he asked her if he was close to Trader Joe's. She asked if he was OK.She said he told her, "I'm OK.
