Two months after the first discovery of COVID-19, the specific strain of coronavirus that surfaced at the end of 2019 in China, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention warned of a possible pandemic. It’s one that could cause “severe” disruptions in the United States.“The difference between COVID-19 and other typical coronaviruses is that it seems to be causing more episodes of pneumonia and people are getting a lot sicker,” said Dr. Michelle Barron, Medical Director of Infection Prevention at the University of Colorado Hospital. The announcement was met with some panic – people began discussions of stockpiling.“They said to be prepared and I think preparation is something we do all the time, we just don’t think of it in the context of an infectious disease,” Dr. Barron said. Barron says that in order to prepare, you don’t need to do any more than you normally would preparing for something like a big storm. “Have a plan be ready to go so that you have a baby sitter or someone that needs help from you has another access.”Dr. Barron said she does not foresee Americans facing a shortage of food or medications at this time. “The biggest thing that’s already been affected is our ability to travel. We live in a global world. People are on planes, trains and going places all the time,” she said. The CDC also said Americans should prepare for what’s called “community transmission.” “When you start seeing cases in the community, you start having a lot more community transmission where it’s not just associated with travel. I think there will be disruptions in the sense that big events that were planned might start to get canceled. Schools may or may not cancel for a certain period of time if there’s a certain number of cases in the school, just like we do now with norovirus or when there’s big outbreaks of flu,” Dr. Barron said. This could also have an impact on the goods available in the U.S., as part of the global market. “The term pandemic means it’s worldwide,” said Dr. Alex Padilla, a Professor of Economics at the Metropolitan State University of Denver. “Investors are very worried because again the supply chain is very complex which means if it becomes a pandemic, it becomes much more difficult to produce goods that are complex and assembled and produced in different countries.” “Certainly, supply chain is always an issue in a pandemic event, we saw this back during H1N1 in the U.S, and saw it during the Ebola crisis, where personal protective equipment became short in supply,” said Patrick Conroy, the Director of Safety at UCHealth. “I don’t know if any country could ever be truly fully prepared for the next novel virus or pandemic. We certainly have a framework in place.” At the University of Colorado Hospital and other health facilities across the U.S., they have special pathogens units where they can take high risk patients. They use special equipment to keep any infections from spreading. “The airflow helps keep any germs or bacteria from entering the suit,” said Mark Yoder, Nurse Manager for the Intensive Care Unit at the University of Colorado Hospital. He displayed how nurses stay protected in airtight suits while caring for infectious patients. Like with any illness, Dr. Barron said there are ways you can prevent yourself from getting sick, like carrying hand sanitizer and washing your hands often. “I think preparation is always a good idea. Having things that are critical to your needs is always a good idea. I think the situation is very fluid, it could change very rapidly,” she said. “Don’t let the headlines put you in a state where you think you can’t do anything.”“People confuse pandemic with Zombieland. They think the entire world is turning into Zombieland and everything is coming to a stop. That’s not the way it is,” Dr. Alex Padilla said. 3843

The coveted crash test ratings for vehicles are in desperate need of an update, according to multiple auto safety groups. The system hasn't been updated since 2010. Right now, 98% of all vehicles get four or five stars. “It’s the equivalent of Halloween — everyone gets candy,” says Jason Levine with the Center for Auto Safety. “The idea is supposed to be separating between things that are safe and things that are really safe.” Levine says the tests are too easy to pass and they don't help consumers understand the difference between cars. Some recommendations include updating the ratings by testing new technology that helps drivers avoid crashes, like emergency automatic braking, and accounting for how passengers in the rear seats are impacted Experts also recommend testing systems that help avoid hitting pedestrians. This type of testing already exists, it just hasn't been mandated in the U.S. “NHSTA, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, has dragged its feet on renewing these ratings for almost a decade now,” Levine says. “They said they were going to update them in 2015. They didn't. They said they were going to update them in 2018 and they didn't. Here we are, we just saw a press release of NHSTA saying we'll do something in 2020 but they haven't even really explained what that is.” Advocates also say there's a need to update crash test dummies to reflect changes we've seen in drivers, like weight, height and age.Auto safety groups would like to see a silver star added for older drivers to better understand how a car might protect them in a crash. 1604

A Georgia family got a special holiday surprise last week after finding an owl hiding inside their Christmas tree. The discovery came last Thursday evening when Katie McBride Newman and her two children, India and Jack, were finishing dinner.India, 10, had started to clear the table and was in another room when Newman heard her exclaim, "Oh my gosh!""She comes very dramatically into the dining room and goes, 'Mama, that ornament scared me,'" Newman told CNN. "Then she bursts into tears."Newman said she's a big fan of owls, so the tree actually had about a dozen owl ornaments gracing its branches. At first, Newman said she thought India had just been spooked by one of those. So Newman checked it out, ready to calm her daughter's fears. But when she peered into the tree for the ornament, she saw the owl turn its head and look straight at her."And I'm like, 'Oh, that's a real owl,'" Newman said. Meanwhile, India had disappeared into the other room, in tears again.Owl may have been in their tree for over a weekThe family had purchased the tree from a store about two days after Thanksgiving, so at first they thought the owl must have flown in and taken refuge inside their tree, Newman's husband, Billy, told CNN.The family left their windows and doors open that night, hoping the bird would leave on its own -- but it didn't.The next day, they called the Chattahoochee Nature Center, a non-profit environmental center about an hour away from their home in Newnan. An employee there told them to leave the owl some raw chicken, concerned it may not have eaten in a few days. The employee stopped by Saturday morning. She caught the bird and identified it as an Eastern screech owl, common in the Georgia area, a spokesperson for the nature center, Jon Copsey, told CNN. She also checked for injuries and gave it some food and nutritional supplements. The owl was pretty thin, igniting the theory that the bird must have been inside the tree since they bought it, Billy Newman said.Returning the owl to the wildThe employee left the family some instructions: Leave the bird in a crate in a darkened room and release it after dark.At dusk on Saturday, the family left the open crate outside. By 9:30 p.m., the owl had disappeared.Copsey said the family did everything right in the situation -- closing it off from the rest of the house, trying to help it escape on its own and calling a wildlife rehabilitation professional.Katie Newman, though, says she swears she can still hear the owl at night, hooting away. 2531
