In one of the most divisive political seasons in U.S. history, finding common ground has been a challenge. But one activist decided to put rubber to the pavement in the hopes of finding what connects us.Seth Gottesdiener recently embarked on a cross country odyssey on his bicycle.“It's my preferred method of transportation and I find it really meditative,” said the avid cyclist. “It's one of my favorite things to do athletically outdoors.”The 33-year-old social justice activist mounted his two-wheeler back in late September for what he called "The Great American Bike Ride."“I thought why don't I bike across America and talk to people,” said Gottesdiener. “I'll talk to just denizens of the country and see where they're at and see how this year has affected them and their opinions.”The 45-day journey began in Los Angeles. His plan was to pedal his way through 22 cities and 13 states, concluding his expedition in the nation’s capital on Election Day.“I was not prepared for the great Southwest,” he said. “It was very intense. It was very unrelenting. The heat was over 100 degrees a lot of the days, giant mountains, really dry.”All along the way, Gottesdiener met with Americans from all walks of life. He interviewed them as part of a feature documentary.“I want people to hear voices that they would have never come encounter with on their own. I want to connect Americans together.”The ride also took him on a journey of self-discovery.“There’s parts of the country that I hadn't ever seen before, like Arkansas, like Kentucky, and a lot of Tennessee. And it was beautiful,” he said.It was also an opportunity, he says, to gain a better understanding of fellow citizens bitterly divided by politics. He hopes the journey reminds one another of the human spirit that connects us all.“Be there for each other. Help each other. Pull each other up by the bootstraps, rather than be so divided as we've seen this year.”One of the questions that Gottesdiener asked people on his journey was: “If there's one thing you could say to all Americans right now, what would it be?”He knows what he would say.“I would just say ‘Listen.’” 2147

INDIANAPOLIS -- A man carrying an AR-15 at the sister version of the national gun violence rally in downtown Indianapolis on Saturday drew quite the attention from the crowd. The man was walking around outside the Indiana Statehouse during the Indianapolis "March for our Lives" march with the gun strapped to his back. Jami Stall said she respects the man's right to be at the rally but she found his attendance, carrying the firearm, to be alarming and in bad taste. READ | Hundreds attend March for our Lives rally at Indiana Statehouse"It was led by children and teens - I thought that was in bad form," said Stall. In the coming weeks and months, several coronavirus vaccines will begin making their way to our cities in a hope to curtail the spread of a virus that has put a halt on our everyday lives and filled the nation's hospital rooms.Yasir Batalvi, 24, signed up for one of these trials and was among the first Americans to be vaccinated against the coronavirus. The Boston-area resident was among those who participated in Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine trial.Moderna’s vaccine has been hailed as a medical breakthrough. The vaccine has been considered 94.1% effective against the virus. According to Moderna, none of the thousands who were given two shots of the vaccine had severe COVID-19 symptoms. That is compared to 30 patients who were given a placebo who had symptoms.While the vaccine could nearly eliminate the number of hospitalizations and deaths associated with the virus, the shot might result in some symptoms."I actually had some pretty significant symptoms after I got the second dose. Once I got the second dose, I was fine while I was in the hospital. But that evening was rough. I mean, I developed a low-grade fever, and fatigue and chills," Batalvi told CNN.But by the next day, Batalvi said he felt “ready to go.”In an interview with CNN last week, Operation Warp Speed chief scientific adviser Moncef Slaoui said that 10 to 15% of those immunized had noticeable side effects.“Most people will have much less noticeable side effects. That frankly -- in comparison to a 95% protection against an infection that can be deadly or significantly debilitating -- I think is an appropriate balance," he told CNN.Batalvi was entered in a double blind trial, meaning he doesn’t know if he was given a placebo or the actual vaccine."I hope once this vaccine comes out, people feel confident taking it. I mean, I'm right here: I took the vaccine -- it was all right. I think we can get through this," he told CNN.In order to obtain an emergency use authorization, the FDA will weigh the vaccine’s benefits against possible side effects. 2049
