A multistate outbreak of listeria has been traced to a Houston manufacturer's Vietnamese ready-to-eat pork products, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced this week. Long Phung Food Products has issued a recall of its ready-to-eat pork products, which were shipped nationwide.Four people were hospitalized after eating Long Phung anchovy-marinated pork patty rolls manufactured between May 21 and November 16 and labeled with establishment number "EST. 13561." No deaths have been reported.Listeria is the third leading cause of death from food poisoning in the United States, according to the CDC, and is especially dangerous for anyone with a weakened immune system, over age 65 or pregnant. Symptoms usually occur within four weeks of infection but can take as long as 70 days to appear. In some cases, the first signs of infection are diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. Typical symptoms that follow include headache, stiff neck, fever, muscle pain, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions.Pregnant women are especially at risk. According to the CDC, they are 10 times more likely to get a listeria infection, and the odds are even higher for Hispanic pregnant women, who are 24 times more likely to get listeria.Although pregnant women typically experience only flu-like symptoms, the danger to the developing fetus is high. Infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, premature delivery or stillbirth.Newborns with listeriosis can develop blood infections, meningitis and other serious and potentially life-threatening complications. Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics.The illness has affected people in Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee and Michigan, but the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said it is concerned that families and businesses may have stored frozen products. A Monroe County woman is facing second-degree murder charges after police say she decapitated her seven-year old son in her Sweden, New York home Thursday night.According to 13 WHAM in Rochester, court documents show Hanane Mouhib, 36, used "a large-bladed kitchen knife to intentionally stab [the boy] in the upper-left area of the back." The victim, Abraham Cardenas, was a first-grade student at Barclay Elementary School in the Brockport School District. Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter said several other people, including children, were in the home at the time of the attack. Mouhib graduated from nursing school at the College at Brockport in May 2011.Officials at Rochester Regional Health System told 13 WHAM Mouhib worked as a nurse practitioner at Genesee Mental Health from January 2016 through January 2017.The town of Sweden sits on the western edge of Monroe County, and is bordered on the west by Orleans County and on the south by Genesee County.  1019

A Valrico, Florida mom is sharing her experience on social media after she said she was asked asked to wait outside the Plant City DMV office with her infant daughter.Liz Gatley, a stay-at-home mother of three girls, said she was asked by a representative at the Plant City Tag Office to take her one-year-old daughter outside or come back another day. In a picture on Facebook you can see at least four young children, one in a stroller, and the mothers waiting outside the office. Gatley said her daughter, as well as the other children were not being disruptive and said she's a firm believer of taking them outside if they were. In the post, Gatley wrote, "I was so mad but I was also embarrassed and confused," she said. She went on to say, "for you to embarrass me and be extremely rude, unapologetic and not understanding the fact many moms are stay at home moms with little to no help, is what bothers me."Gatley said she and the mothers stood outside with no bench or air conditioning as they waited two hours to be seen at the office. At the end of the post she said, "if you have children, go to another location!"Doug Belden with the Hillsborough County Tax Collector's spoke with Tampa-based WFTS on Friday afternoon. He apologized to Gatley and the experience at the Plant City office noting it was not the friendly and efficient policy that is in place.Belden said he called Gatley directly and told her he would meet with her at her earliest convenience, even throughout the weekend to help get the facts of what happened. Belden said he is outraged that Gatley experienced this at his office, and that children are always welcome in the offices across Hillsborough County.He went on to say that he will be looking into this employee, and taking appropriate measures -- and even went as far to say he plans to check with the landlord to see if they can install benches outside the office. We asked Belden if Gatley should have gone back inside, and he said "absolutely" adding if he found out about this situation at the time, he would have taken care of this immediately. Gatley said Belden was sincere in his apologies and plans to take him up on his offer of meeting with her as soon as possible.  2349

A Russian who allegedly worked on funding online propaganda efforts to manipulate voters in the 2016 and 2018 elections was charged with a federal crime Friday as part of a wider conspiracy to hurt American democracy.Elena Alekseevna Khusyaynova, 44, of St. Petersburg, Russia, is charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States for managing the financing of the social media troll operation that included the Internet Research Agency, which special counsel Robert Mueller's investigators charged with crimes earlier this year.Prosecutors who unsealed the complaint Friday say she aided the Russian effort to "inflame passions" online related to immigration, gun control and the Second Amendment, the Confederate flag, race relations, LGBT issues, the Women's March and the NFL National Anthem debate from December 2016 until May 2018.The social media efforts specifically focused on the shootings of church members in Charleston, South Carolina, and concert attendees in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Charlottesville "Unite the Right" rally, which left one counterprotester dead, and police shootings of African-American men, the complaint says.The criminal charge says the Russians' online manipulation effort focused on multiple political viewpoints and candidates, but frequently zeroed in on the Republican Party's most well-known leaders.In one effort to spread an online news article about the late Sen. John McCain's position on a border wall to stop illegal immigration, an alleged conspirator directed others to "brand McCain as an old geezer." They also attempted to paint House Speaker Paul Ryan as "a complete and absolute nobody incapable of any decisiveness" and as a "two-faced loudmouth."They aimed other efforts at stories about Jeb Bush, Sen. A Northern California family was forced to evacuate their home over the weekend, as the Carr wildfire continues to spread. Not only was the family tasked with getting themselves out, they also had to evacuate the animals on their rescue farm.Lisa Ellsworth runs Tiny Tim’s Pals, a pet rescue farm in El Dorado Hills, California.“It’s our family, yeah,” says Ellsworth. "We take ‘em in from—sometimes they’ve been abandoned; a lot have been abused, neglected.”This weekend, those animals needed to be rescued from their sanctuary, as the fire in Northern California moved frighteningly close to their farm.“All the sudden, our neighbors come drivin’ up and they’re like, ‘Get out! We’re being evacuated,’” recalls Ellsworth. “The police are coming around, so that’s the notice.”Because of the time constraints to get out, they had to abandon two pigs and two feral dogs that couldn’t be corralled into trailers in time. The animals the family could take, they brought to the Rolling Hills Equestrian Center.Terry Skevington, with the center, says it’s one of the few places that allows owners to bring animals of all shapes and sizes. The animals can even sleep on site with them.“I had an old couple park here and stay with their cats, because the hotels wouldn’t let them stay with their cats,” says Skevington. “To some of ‘em, that’s all they got left.”He says the outpouring of donations of items--like fans for the animal stalls, halters and even feed--has been overwhelming.As for Ellsworth, she doesn’t know the status of her home or the animals she left behind, but she says she’s been able to keep it off her mind by staying busy. Fortunately, Ellsworth has insurance. She says in the worst-case scenario, she’d use the money as an opportunity to build a new barn for her animals.Representatives for the Humane Society that serves the region say, overall, they’ve seen about 1,000 animals displaced since the Carr fire broke out. About 150 of those animals have been housed at Rolling Hills. The center’s operators here say those animals and their owners can stay as long as they need.  2118
