(KGTV) - An East County woman was devastated to find out the money she spent to buy a new cat likely went to con artists.“I just felt like I lost my sense of love for humanity,” Suzi Moon told Team 10. Moon’s Maine Coon cat, Teka, recently passed away. She was 15-years-old and a longtime member of her family.“He was the best cat ever,” Moon said. When he died, she was heartbroken.“I was in an emotional mode,” Moon said. “I wanted to get another one because I just was so used to that cat.”Moon searched online and found a website that advertised pure Maine Coone cats. She emailed the website and got a response. “They emailed me back and this cat that I saw on the website was a gray cat. Beautiful,” she said.She also spoke to someone on the phone, who sounded legitimate. The man asked her questions, such as whether or not she was having the cat indoors and if she was declawing the cat. Moon eventually scraped up 0 and sent the money through Zelle, something she now regrets.The day the supposed seller was supposed to ship the cat to her, he asked for more money for a special crate. “We need to have you cash app, send ,000 more,” Moon said. After back and forth with the seller and refusing to pay more, Moon said they eventually blocked her number. The 0 she paid was gone. The website, puremainecoons.com, is no longer active. Team 10 found the website on petscams.com, a site that bills itself as a pet watchdog website. The Better Business Bureau said pets are the top scam when it comes to online purchases. The average loss is 0. Moon wanted to share her mistake with others in hopes nobody else falls victim to this scam.“I just felt violated. There [are] people out there taking advantage like that. It’s disgusting,” Moon said.Team 10 called the person Moon said she spoke with about the cat. That man hung up before answering any questions. The BBB suggests do not buy a pet without seeing it in person. The organization also recommends conducting an internet search of the photo. If you see the same picture on different websites, it could be fraud. 2112

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— The San Diego Police Department's Eastern Division opened up their “Trunk or Treat Haunted Station” to more than 500 kids the Skyline neighborhood. Officers and community members helped to transform the station, and students from Morse High School played monsters in the haunted house. The tradition began four years ago, with the goal of connecting the community with law enforcement.  “It’s so safe. It’s so fun. The kids are having a blast,” one woman said, as her cousin played with the police equipment on display.Outside the station, sponsors gave out candy and snow cones. Officers allowed Trick-Or-Treaters to tour the inside of a SWAT vehicle and ride a police motorcycle. “When I was a child, we didn’t have a place like this to come to,” one woman said, as her grandchildren played inside the SWAT vehicle. “As I was growing up, they would say 'Don’t eat the candy. Things are unsafe.' But we’re so glad to be here because we know our kids are safe here.”Residents said this was exactly what the community needed-- An experience that not only keeps the streets safe, but builds good relationships between residents and law enforcement. “A lot of the kids said, 'I want to be a police officer when I grow up.' And that’s what we want. We want kids from this neighborhood to get interested in becoming a police officer,” Lt. Ernesto Servin of SDPD said.  1414

(KGTV) - San Diego County is offering help to families where a grandparent is a sole provider for his/her grandchildren, as that population expands.Through the Department of Health and Human Services, the County offers support groups, events, resources and more to help people in their golden years who are suddenly thrust back into the role of parent.According to the county's website, there are more than 24,000 grandparents in San Diego County who are raising a young child."That's a pretty large number," says Program Manager Tina Emmerick. "But what's really striking for us is we know that's not capturing the whole population."Emmerick says the reasons grandparents wind up providing for their grandchildren vary. In many cases, it's because the parents tested positive for drugs, are incarcerated, have mental health problems or passed away.For the grandparents left to raise the kids, it can be overwhelming."It's difficult," says Martha Lopez. She's been raising her grandson, Jacob since he was born. His mother, Martha's daughter Crystal, tested positive for Methamphetamine during birth and CPS was going to take Jacob away."I didn't want Jake to go anywhere else," says Lopez. "I wanted to make sure that he was well taken care of."I love him, and he deserves the best, and I'm here for him," she says.Lopez says the last six years have been wonderful, raising Jacob as her own. She had to take early retirement from her job at UC San Diego to become a full-time mom again.Jacob has limited contact with his biological mother, who Lopez says still has issues with drugs.Lopez is part of a support group run through the County. It's one of several programs they offer to grandparents raising grandchildren.The county started offering help to this group in 2012. The resources and support have expanded over the years. They now offer four symposiums throughout the year so grandparents can find all the help they need in one place."We can direct them to food banks, legal aid, support groups," says Emmerick. "They're realizing they're not alone in this. There are other families like them. And that broader community can wrap around these families and provide that extra support."The Live Well San Diego initiative and 2-1-1 help the county with the program. 2297

The shutoffs in 38 counties could last into Tuesday. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A jury on Monday ordered agribusiness giant Monsanto Co. to pay a combined .055 billion to a couple claiming that the company's popular weed killer Roundup Ready caused their cancers.The jury's verdict is third such courtroom loss for Monsanto in California since August, but a San Francisco law professor said it's likely a trial judge or appellate court will significantly reduce the punitive damage award.The state court jury in Oakland concluded that Monsanto's weed killer caused the non-Hodgkin's lymphoma Alva Pilliod and Alberta Pilliod each contracted. Jurors awarded them each billion in punitive damages in addition to a combined million in compensatory damages.A federal jury in San Francisco ordered the weed killer maker in March to pay a Sonoma County man million. A San Francisco jury last August awarded 9 million to a former golf course greens keeper who blamed his cancer on Monsanto's Roundup Ready herbicide. He said the ratio between the billion in punitive damages and million in compensatory damages is too high. He said judges rarely allow punitive damages to exceed four times actual damages awarded.The California Supreme Court ruled in 2016 that any punitive damages exceeding 10 times the compensatory damages are likely unconstitutionally high. The court didn't propose a ratio it felt correct, but said punitive damages should almost never exceed nine times actual damages, it said.The punitive damages awarded Monday are 36 times the actual damages.The lawsuits have battered Bayer's stock since it purchased Monsanto for billion last year and Bayer's top managers are facing shareholders discontent.Chairman Werner Wenning told shareholders at Bayer's annual general meeting in Bonn last month that company leaders "very much regret" falls in its share price. At the same time, CEO Werner Baumann insisted that "the acquisition of Monsanto was and remains the right move for Bayer."Bayer's stock price closed Monday at .91 a share, down 45 cents or 2.76 percent per share, in trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
