SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Six robbery suspects were arrested after reportedly assaulting a 14-year-old over a cell phone and leading police on a pursuit late Friday.A 14-year-old boy was walking in the 4400 block of Newport Avenue in Point Loma Heights when a Toyota Rav4 pulled alongside him just before 9:30 p.m., according to San Diego Police.Three suspects, one of whom was armed, got out and demanded the victim's cell phone at gunpoint, police said, before the armed suspect hit the boy over the head with the gun. The suspects then fled the area with the boy's cell phone.Police located the Toyota and tried to pull the vehicle over, prompting the suspects to lead police on a pursuit into the Lincoln Park area. Four juvenile and two adult suspects jumped out of the vehicle at Willie James Jones Ave. and tried to run but were all taken into custody after short foot pursuits, police said. 899

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- State Assemblyman Todd Gloria continues to maintain a comfortable lead in the race to become San Diego's next mayor, according to a new scientific poll. The 10News-Union-Tribune poll shows City Councilmembers Scott Sherman, a Republican, and Barbara Bry, a Democrat, vying for the second spot.The top two votegetters March 3, regardless of party, move on the November general election. "Todd Gloria looks assured of punching his ticket, but who is he going to face? Is that going to be fellow Democrat Barbara Bry... or is it going to be Scott Sherman, a Republican, proving that this is still a two-party town," said Thad Kousser, who chairs the political science department at UC San Diego. The poll, of 527 likely voters, shows Gloria leading the field with 29 percent of the vote. Sherman is in second with 18 percent, and Bry has 13 percent. The poll's margin of error was 5.3 percent, which Bry and Sherman are within. Democrats currently outnumber Republicans in registration by a two-to-one margin in the city, and independents outnumber Republicans by 40 percent. "When it gets close, when it gets into the single digits, the election day is really what matters," Kousser said. An additional question to be answered election day is the fate of Measure C. It would raise the overnight tax hotel guests pay in the city of San Diego by as much as 3.25 percent to pay for expanding the convention center, street repair and homeless services. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Serious concerns being raised about a COVID-19 outbreak at a federal detention center in downtown San Diego this week after dozens of detainees and employees tested positive.According to the Federal Defenders of San Diego there are 86 detainees currently COVID-19 positive at the Western Region Detention Facility. The Federal Defenders say those numbers came from the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) later Monday afternoon.Earlier Monday a spokesperson for the Marshals told ABC 10News, “As of Nov. 2, we have received reports of 74 USMS prisoners being held at the Western Region Detention Facility having tested positive for COVID-19 at any point during the pandemic. Of these, 22 have since recovered. The USMS prisoner population at the facility is 520.”The spokesperson did say data on prisoner health comes to USMS through established reporting mechanisms that may vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction; the data is not real-time and may not reflect the most current information.It’s not just inmates testing positive.According to the Geo Group, the company that runs the facility, 64 GEO employees at the Western Region Detention Facility have tested positive for COVID-19.A spokesperson for GEO said 54 employees who previously tested positive have fully recovered and returned to work.Nine of the employees who tested positive are currently at home on self-quarantine, and one employee is receiving treatment at a local hospital.In a statement a spokesperson wrote in part, “While the COVID-19 pandemic has presented unprecedented challenges, from the very beginning we have taken extensive measures to ensure the health and safety of those in our care and our employees, who are on the front lines making daily sacrifices at the facility.”In October, Team 10 reported on claims that some people who are arrested, accused of federal crimes, and taken to the GEO facility are not getting to court within the required timeframe.At the time, Attorney Ryan Stitt said outbreaks at detention facilities endanger the broader community."The guards that are present, the healthcare professionals that go to the jail and then our hospitals generally that need to treat the inmates once they become ill are all impacted by the rising COVID-19 numbers in custody," Stitt said. 2300
