SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Comic-Con Museum plans to open to the public next summer, revealing a new look at the museum space designed to provide a year-round SDCC experience.The former San Diego Hall of Champions is still undergoing work to transform its interior into a dedicated space for art, pop culture, and interactive experiences. When finished, the museum plans to have a 25,000-square-feet of space for exhibits, more than 6,000-square-feet of classroom space for hands-on enrichment, and a 4K video theater and presentation space.The museum says it will also host a year-round schedule of programs and exhibits, like Comic-Con panels, creator meet-and-greets, experiential cinema, watch parties, eSports, cosplay shows, and more.A cafe featuring items themed off of current exhibits and programs is also planned. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Carte Hotel in the heart of Little Italy is not nearly as full as it could be.It had been open just a few months before the pandemic hit, "We had a great start until March and the virus started showing up," said general manager Henri Birmele.Like many other hotels in California, The Carte is only allowed to book rooms for essential workers.But staff is preparing for when the Governor says they can fully reopen. "We have sanitizers on every floor, every piece of equipment that's available we have throughout the building to take care of team members and hotel guests," Birmele said Common areas will be sanitized every hour, the restaurant and rooftop bar will be spaced out to make it easier to social distance, valet service won't be available, there will be at least 12 hours and a deep clean between when one person checks out and another checks in and room service will leave orders at the door instead of bringing them in. The Carte is hoping to ease people back into hotels by encouraging "staycations" and planning to offer locals discounts and deals. "How people react, I don't know. I think time will tell. That's because the extra 0 in weekly unemployment payments from the Federal Government are expiring this month. The loss will reduce the maximum weekly unemployment paymeny to the 0 that comes from the state. City Heights resident Abby Heilbron is about to see her weekly checks go from ,050 to 0. Heilbron, whose husband is still working full time, said a dozen of her friends moved out of San Diego during the pandemic, unable to afford the region's high cost of living."And it is going to be a really scary time for a lot of people here, very quickly," Heilbron said. The extra 0 was part of the Federal stimulus package passed by Congress and the president in late March. The state Employment Development Department says the payments will end July 25. Whether to extend the benefits is now a political issue on Capitol Hill. The loss of the income comes when San Diego County restaurants are not allowed to serve indoors, meaning one of the area's biggest sectors is not hiring. "I've heard the argument that this gives people the incentive not to work, but the problem is that there are fewer alternatives for those people to go work at," said Alan Gin, an economist at the University of San Diego. Rent hikes and slow income growth are making it more difficult for new grads to afford rental homes, according to a HotPads report. A typical college graduate in the U.S. spends 45.3 percent of his or her income on the median rent of ,740, up from 40.5 percent for the Class of 2009. The rent burden has grown by 22 percent as early-career median incomes have dropped 14.5 percent, HotPads analysts say. In San Diego, the median rent is more than the entire income for new graduates with degrees including biology and business management, at ,000 per year, and nearly the entire income for those with degrees in psychology, at roughly ,000 per year, HotPads reports. The top-earning degrees nationwide were primarily in engineering fields, with mining and mineral engineers earning a median ,854 after college. “As rent prices and student debts rise, affordability concerns for recent college graduates have garnered attention on the national stage,” said Joshua Clark, economist at HotPads. “Graduating from college still typically pays off in the long run, but slower wage growth for college graduates and rising costs have dampened the immediate financial benefits associated with a four-year degree. As renters consider their career interests and their short-term costs of living, where and how they live post-graduation can have more of an impact on their finances now than ever before."
