SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego City Council voted today on their intent to place a police reform measure on the November ballot.The resolution would create an independent commission on police practices in San Diego, if passed.“Today’s action is a big step in the right direction toward real accountability and transparency,” Council President Georgette Gómez said. “The Council's vote demonstrates our commitment to meaningful public-safety reform. In particular, I want to thank Councilmember Monica Montgomery for her leadership on this critical issue. I’m also grateful to Women Occupy San Diego, San Diegans for Justice, the ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties, Mid-City CAN, and the Earl B. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police are reminding families who may care for an at-risk loved one to have a plan if they become lost.Officers said Saturday that a woman named "Lupe" disappeared from her home recently and was lost before a neighbor who noticed her called police.SDPD Southern Division officer McClain responded to the call and stayed with Lupe as other officers searched the area to try and get her back home, according to police. An officer eventually found a residence with an open door, which was Lupe's home.Instead of transporting her back home in a police vehicle, and possibly confusing or scaring the woman, SDPD said McClain, "figured it was time to get his steps in and walked Lupe back to her residence." There, she was reunited with her family.SDPD said the incident highlighted the need for families to make sure loved ones with medical or mental issues have an ID bracelet with their basic information, address, and emergency contact if they become lost.The Alzheimer's Association says families can prevent a loved one from wandering away from home by identifying times they are likely to wander and plan activities, ensure basic meets are met, use devices to signal when a door or window opens, and regularly supervise them. The group says families can plan for the possibility of someone wandering away from home by asking neighbors to call if they see the person alone, know where a person could likely go to if they leave the home alone, and familiarize themselves with the neighborhood and any possible hazards there may be. 1568

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Fire-Rescue Thursday pulled a man to safety who fell 30 feet into a trench on the grounds of a work site at UC San Diego. According to the department, the incident happened just before 3 p.m. on Voit Drive at Matthews Lane. Crews used a pulley system to get the worker, a man in his 20s, out of the trench. He was then taken to UCSD Medical Center for treatment of blunt-force injuries and burns he received when he landed on a steam pipe. His condition is unknown at this time. RELATED: 1 dead, 4 injured in accident at construction site at UC San DiegoNearby workers and an officer were able to climb down and stay with the worker until he could be safely lifted out of the trench.The incident comes after one of five workers injured in a construction site accident died on the UC San Diego campus in July of 2019. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police are looking for a man described as mentally ill or under the influence of drugs.Sunday night at 8:58 p.m. someone called 9-1-1 describing a man acting irrationally. Police responded and found the Honda Accord matching the description of the call and tried to pull the car over.The driver flipped a u-turn and sped up to about 80 miles per hour, running three red lights down Governor Drive.Police slowed down to a safer speed and as they caught up to the driver they found the car crashed into the dead end fence.They say the man, described as Hispanic, in his late 20s, 5' 8" tall, wit ha shaved head, wearing a short sleeved shirt, a hoodie, and gray shorts took off. They believe he ran from the car.They searched the area, known as Rose Canyon Natural Park, and could not find the man.If you see him, police ask that you please not approach him and call 9-1-1. 918

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego city leaders met Monday to look for new ways to tackle homelessness. Several departments and organizations gave presentations to a committee, lead by Councilmember Chris Ward.The Select Committee on Homelessness met to discuss how to create new employment opportunities for homeless and how to get them into the existing rapid-rehousing programs. They also discussed a new program that would house all homeless services in one location.The San Diego Police Department provided an overview of their new Neighborhood Policing division. They say they are working to provide outreach, mental health services, and enforcement when needed.San Diego residents spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting, thanking the committee for their work but asking them to do more.Several other agencies also had presentations, providing updates on the temporary bridge shelters and the homeless storage facilities.The Select Committee on Homelessness meets one to two times a month. 1013
