(KGTV) — Disneyland and California Adventure have announced that both theme parks will close starting Saturday through the end of March amid the coronavirus outbreak. While there have been no reported cases at either theme park, both locations were being closed "in the best interest of our guests and employees," following Gov. Gavin Newsom's executive order surrounding large events throughout California.Disney hotels will remain open through Monday to allow guests the ability to make travel arrangements.RELATED: What's been canceled, postponed in San Diego, nationally due to coronavirus"We will monitor the ongoing situation and follow the advice and guidance of federal and state officials and health agencies. Disney will continue to pay cast members during this time," Disney said in a statement. "Disneyland Resort will work with guests who wish to change or cancel their visits, and will provide refunds to those who have hotel bookings during this closure period."Those Disney employees who are able to work from home are being asked to do so, according to the company.Later, Disney said all its US cruise lines and theme parks worldwide would be closed through the end of the month.RELATED: Fact Check: President Trump's coronavirus address"In an abundance of caution and in the best interest of our guests and employees, we are proceeding with the closure of our theme parks at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disneyland Paris Resort, beginning at the close of business on Sunday, March 15, through the end of the month. Disney Cruise Line will suspend all new departures beginning Saturday, March 14, through the end of the month," the company said.Thursday, Gov. Newsom issued an executive order recommending against large events with gatherings of 250 people or more across the state. He added that the mandate excluded casinos, card rooms, theaters and large theme parks, such as Disneyland, Magic Mountain and Universal Studios Hollywood, due to "complexity of their "unique circumstances." Initially, Disneyland said they had taken steps to protect guests and cast members, including "additional hand sanitizers throughout the park, increased the frequency of cleaning and disinfection in high guest-contact areas and are providing information about good hygiene practices and illness prevention to our guests and cast members."RELATED: Coronavirus concerns leave consumers unclear about ticket sale refundsDisneyland is the latest location to cancel events amid the global coronavirus outbreak. Several nationwide sports leagues, and local events and school systems have either canceled or postponed events in response to the virus."These changes will cause real stress -- especially for families and businesses least equipped financially to deal with them," Newsom said. "The state of California is working closely with businesses who will feel the economic shock of these changes, and we are mobilizing every level of government to help families as they persevere through this global health crisis." 3038

(CNN) -- The terrorist behind the 2000 attack on the USS Cole is believed to have been killed in a US airstrike in Yemen on Tuesday, according to a US administration official. Jamel Ahmed Mohammed Ali Al-Badawi was an al Qaeda operative who the US believes helped orchestrate the October 12, 2000, attack on the USS Cole that killed 17 American sailors, including San Diegan Lakiba Palmer. The official said all intelligence indicators show al-Badawi was killed in a strike in Yemen as a result of a joint US military and intelligence operation. RELATED: Community gathers to remember USS Cole bombingUS officials told CNN that the strike took place in Yemen's Ma'rib Governorate. The administration official said that al-Badawi was struck while driving alone in a vehicle and that the US assessed there was not any collateral damage. Al-Badawi was on the FBI's list of most wanted terrorists. The Cole was attacked by suicide bombers in a small boat laden with explosives while in port in Aden, Yemen, for refueling. The attack also wounded 39 sailors. The bombing was attributed to al Qaeda and foreshadowed the attack on the US less than one year later on September 11, 2001. Al-Badawi was arrested by Yemeni authorities in December of 2000 and held in connection with the Cole attack but he escaped from a prison in Yemen in April of 2003. He was recaptured by Yemeni authorities in March of 2004 but again escaped Yemeni custody in February 2006 after he and several other inmates used broomsticks and pieces of a broken fan to dig an escape tunnel that led from the prison to a nearby mosque. The State Department's Rewards for Justice Program had previously offered a reward of up to million for information leading to his arrest. Abd al Rahim al-Nashiri, an al Qaeda militant also seen as a key figure in the bombing, has been in US custody since 2002 and has been held at the detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba since 2006. US military prosecutors have charged al-Nashiri with murder for allegedly planning the attack on the USS Cole. Al-Badawi is also not the first high profile al Qaeda target that the US has killed in Yemen. US officials told CNN in August that a 2017 CIA drone strike in Yemen killed Ibrahim al-Asiri, a master al Qaeda bombmaker. Al-Asiri, a native of Saudi Arabia, was the mastermind behind the "underwear bomb" attempt to detonate on a flight above the skies of Detroit on Christmas Day in 2009. He was widely credited with perfecting miniaturized bombs with little or no metal content that could make it past some airport security screening. That ability made him a direct threat to the US, and some of his plots had come close to reaching their targets in the US. The US has sought to prevent al Qaeda from exploiting the chaos of Yemen's civil war to establish a safe haven and the US military carried out 131 airstrikes in Yemen in 2017 and conducted 36 strikes in 2018, nearly all of them targeting al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, a terror group that both al-Asiri and Al-Badawi have been associated with. The CIA has not revealed how many strikes it has carried out. CIA drone strikes are not publicly acknowledged.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2019 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. (KGTV) — California voters have rejected a measure that would reinstate affirmative action based on race and gender.Proposition 16 would have ended the ban on affirmative action, allowing state and local entities to consider race, sex, color, ethnicity, and national origin in public education, public employment, and public contracting — to the extent allowed under federal and state law.Californians voted against the measure 56% to 44%, with 72% of precincts reporting.Critics of the proposition pointed to a previous prop, Prop 209, as to why Californians should vote against it.“The state shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin, in the operation of public employment, public education, and public contracting,” opposition stated in reference to a passage from Prop 209. 899

(KGTV) — An inmate who escaped from San Quentin State Prison in Northern California the day after Christmas was apprehended Saturday about 200 miles away.Shalom Mendoza, 21, was reported missing just after 9:30 p.m. on Dec. 26 after he had been working outside of the prison perimeter with other inmates, according to the state Corrections and Rehabilitation Department (CDCR).Investigators began searching the surrounding area and say he appeared to have carjacked a Toyota Rav4 from a Home Depot parking lot in the San Rafael area.RELATED: San Quentin State Prison inmate escapes, suspected in carjackingThe Toyota was later found abandoned off the 101 Freeway north of Paso Robles on Friday. That led CDCR officials closer to Mendoza.A civilian saw Mendoza at a Taco Bell location in Paso Robles and called authorities, who placed him in custody without incident at about 12:30 p.m. Saturday.Mendoza now faces escape and carjacking charges. He was serving a five-year sentence for use of a deadly weapon during a carjacking/attempted carjacking and evading or attempting to evade a peace officer while driving recklessly. 1132
