SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A local marijuana testing lab is releasing vape test results that are alarming. Almost 80% of the cannabis vape cartridges were tested and deemed "unfit for consumption."Tucked away in a quiet San Diego business park, Platinum Vape manufacturing company produces high-potency, pesticide-free cannabis products that go through rigorous testing. Co-founder George Sadler is on a mission to spread awareness about the serious potential health risks of using products from unlicensed vape makers and sellers."It's horrible," he tells 10News, adding, "It's doing so much harm to people, versus walking into a licensed store."Platinum Vape recently teamed up with nearby licensed cannabis dispensary Mankind to buy back cartridges that ranged from home-made concentrates to counterfeits of popular legal brands.In exchange, customers got discounted Platinum Vape cartridges that are tested and regulated.Mankind Chief Operating Officer Vera Levitt tells 10News, "We wanted to encourage them to replace something that could make them sick with something that was safe."The cartridges were sent to Infinite Chemical Analysis Labs, or InfiniteCAL. It's a local cannabis testing lab that then analyzed the cartridges for potency, pesticides, and heavy metals.The lab found that 79% of the cartridges were deemed "unfit for consumption". Additionally, 62% of them failed for pesticides. Almost 40% of the cartridges failed for lead."[Were there] toxic levels of lead?" 10News asks InfiniteCAL co-founder David Marelius. "One of the vape pens had almost a hundred times the legal limit," he explains.The lab also discovered that half of the products had less than 50% THC in them. Some of the cartridges were cut with excessive levels of vitamin E acetate; the additive may be linked to numerous vape-related deaths and illnesses. Marelius adds, "20% of them had a significant amount.""It's sad for me. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego County public defense attorney is accused of providing a felon with a firearm, according to local law enforcement.  San Diego Police confirm that Andrea Bayer was arrested on August 1 and booked into Las Colinas women’s jail on charges related to selling, supplying or delivering a firearm to either a convicted felon or someone wanted on a felony warrant. She was released the same day on bond.  On the State Bar of California’s website, it shows that the 37 year-old’s license is still active and that she works as an Alternate Public Defender for San Diego County. The District Attorney’s Office says Bayer has not been charged and the case remains under review. A Group Communications Officer with San Diego County sent us the following statement: “The County of San Diego cannot comment on personnel matters. Ms. Bayer is currently on leave from her position pending the outcome of the investigation. The Public Defender believes in the presumption of innocence and has faith in the judicial process.” 1070

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new option for bike lanes along 30th Street in North Park looks like a compromise between cyclists and business owners.The new proposal, called Option A+, would build dedicated, protected bike lanes along a 2.4 mile stretch of 30th Street, stretching from Juniper to Adams Avenue. That's longer than initially planned.In return, business owners will get to keep some of their parking. That stretch has around 550 parking spots. The original plan removed all of them. The new plan leaves 100 in place, mostly in business areas rather than residential areas.RELATED: Hundreds of parking spaces in North Park could be removed for bike lanesThe plan first came up at a December meeting of the City Mobility Board.Even with the compromise, some business owners worry the loss of 450 spots will impact their customers."North Park is a destination city," says Kelsey Padigos, the owner of Subterranean Coffee. "We get customers who walk, who ride their bikes and who drive. Especially on the weekend, we get a lot of 'destination' customers."RELATED: North Park business owners push back against plan to add bike lanesPadigos says her company offers a discount to people who ride their bikes, and she wants 30th Street to become safer for cyclists. But this may hurt her bottom line."We have a location in Hillcrest, and the parking situation there is troubling," she says. "It turns customers away. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local retiree has a warning for Americans headed across the border after says he was shaken down for money during a recent trip to Tijuana, possibly due to COVID-19 restrictions.A few weeks ago, on a Sunday afternoon, Tom and his wife, a Mexican native, decided to visit one of her relatives. It's a trip they've made countless times. They drove across the border into Tijuana in their modified truck, bearing California license plates. Almost immediately, he noticed they had company."Saw a small car with municipal officers get behind me and pulled me over," said Tom, who asked us not to use his real name.He says one of two uniformed officers asked him to get out of the truck and walk over the police car, where the officer checked his driver's license."He explained he was pulling me over for tinted windows," said Tom.Tom says he was asked if he was smuggling drugs. Tom said he wasn't."Then he said, 'Here's the real reason I'm pulling you over. The United States closed the border. People are starving, and I want your money. Don't freak out. Don't say anything, or we'll impound your truck and take you to the courts' ... That was scary. I felt helpless," said Tom.Tom says he handed over the in bills he had in his wallet. He says his wife gave the other officer her ."He gave her back and said, 'I don't want to leave you with nothing,'" said Tom.That officer also left her with more details."My wife said he explained to her that they are just mad at the United States, and they're just going to pull over Americans and take whatever money they have because the people in Tijuana are hurting really bad because the border is closed," said Tom.A ban on non-essential border travel by both governments has been in place since March to limit coronavirus infections. Though cross-border traffic still remains busy, the restrictions have taken an economic toll on both sides of the border."I don't understand why they're blaming Americans. We're struggling too," said Tom.Tom says his police encounter ended when the officers let him go, warning him to stay out of Tijuana to avoid a repeat experience. He plans to take that advice."Myself, I'm not going back down there. It just invites trouble. You don't know who you can trust down there. Americans should be cautious," said Tom.Tom says he didn't report it to Mexican authorities because he feared retaliation. He tells ABC 10News a week after his incident, his brother-in-law experienced a similar shakedown while walking in the same area.ABC 10News reached out to the Mexican consulate in San Diego to find out if there have been any similar reported incidents and are waiting to hear back.In a statement, a spokesperson with the Tijuana government said a formal investigation would be launched "to investigate ... this reprehensible case and to apply the corresponding sanctions ... We cannot let the evil act of an officer demerit the good work that has been done to generate greater confidence in the security authorities." 3030

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A non-profit that drives sick kids and their families to the hospital is celebrating one million miles.Climbing into an Emilio Nares Foundation car, mom Latoya Johnson and her 19-year-old daughter Tay Tay started recalling the memories over the last decade. They were one of ENF's first rides. The non-profit was founded in 2003 and began giving rides in August 2005, according to ENF Vice President of Programs Luz Quiroga. The program expanded from San Diego to Orange County in 2009. Rides started in the Imperial Valley in 2015, and expanded again to San Bernardino, Riverside, and South Los Angeles in 2019.The founders lost their son, Emilio, when he was 6 years old to leukemia. During the exhausting hours of treatment, Emilio's parents realized other families didn't have enough support. When Emilio passed, they turned his loss into a legacy.Johnson said Tay Tay was first diagnosed with a tumor the size of a golf ball in her chest when she was 4-and-a-half years old."It was behind her left lung, it was growing attached to her lung," Johnson said. She found it hard to get to doctor's appointments and treatment. 'It was about three buses, two trolleys and a bus on the other side,' Johnson said. The trip took two and a half hours, then they had to walk up a hill to get to Rady Children's Hospital.In the doctor's office she saw a flier for the Emilio Nares Foundation, and they have been getting picked up ever since, shortening their trip to a half-hour door-to-door.Once they kicked the tumor in Tay Tay's chest, they found out when Tay Tay was 15 that she had a brain tumor. "She's 19 years old now, so she literally is a walking blessing, a walking miracle, and I wouldn't trade her for nothing in the world," Johnson said smiling, pinching her daughter's cheek.Johnson said without the foundation she would have been in tears and they absolutely saved her daughter's life.With the foundation celebrating one million miles, Johnson is working on understanding the impact the foundation had not only on their lives, but on 4,000 children."I wanna cry, because I know I'm crying but the tears won't come out because they're all on the inside, but it's amazing. I'm just happy and blessed for you guys," Johnson said hugging CEO Karen Terra.She hopes telling her story will get more families the help they need.ENF kicked off their "Ride with Emilio" campaign Monday and it continues through the end of the month. The goal is to raise awareness for families who need this service as well as the funds to keep it going (donations are being accepted here.) 2598
