The Music City of Nashville will go silent today for #BlackoutTuesday. It’s all part of an effort to show solidarity in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death. Industry leaders say it’s time to reconnect with the community in the wake of Floyd’s death. Musicians and artists everywhere will not release any music or profit off any business for the day. Event organizers say the music industry has benefited so much from African American culture – that it's only fair that today be a day for listening. Some familiar names participating in this, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, Nashville’s Big Machine Label Group, Black River entertainment and Big Loud Records. The Listening Room Cafe is even canceling all events today to focus on change instead. Founder and president Chris Blair Schoessel posted on his Facebook, saying the decision was important.“I hope, and we hope, that we can begin the lead with love and find unity and justice for all. I love you guys. I love you,” he said. You’ll also notice that this movement is spreading fast on social media. The hashtag #TheShowMustBePaused is going viral. 1127

The NCAA said on Monday that it has approved rules that allows conferences and universities to extend an additional year of eligibility for athletes whose season were cut short due to the spread of COVID-19. Earlier this month, the NCAA announced the cancellation of all spring and remaining winter championships. While most winter sports were just getting into postseason play, spring sports, such as baseball and softball, were just getting underway. Generally, the NCAA allows athletes four years that can be used over a five-year span. The ruling will allow athletes for spring sports to complete their four years of eligibility over six years. Teams will also be permitted to extend additional athletic scholarships to athletes to accommodate players opting to take advantage of an extra year of eligibility. Despite calls to also extend a year of eligibility for college basketball players, the NCAA opted not to add eligibility for those athletes. For many college basketball teams, their seasons had ended when most conferences decided on March 10 to suspend the rest of the season.“The Council’s decision gives individual schools the flexibility to make decisions at a campus level,” said Council chair M. Grace Calhoun, athletics director at Penn. “The Board of Governors encouraged conferences and schools to take action in the best interest of student-athletes and their communities, and now schools have the opportunity to do that.” 1457

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is reviewing about 0,000 it received from foundations controlled by accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, MIT's president said. The school also will donate that amount to a charity benefiting Epstein's victims or other sexual abuse victims, President L. Rafael Reif said in an email. The review will focus on the facts around the donations, made over 20 years, and how the school handles contributions and can improve that process, Reif said.Epstein was awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking involving underage girls when he killed himself by hanging in a New York jail cell this month."I offer a profound and humble apology" to the victims on behalf of the administration, Reif said. "With hindsight, we recognize with shame and distress that we allowed MIT to contribute to the elevation of his reputation, which in turn served to distract from his horrifying acts. No apology can undo that."The donations went to the MIT Media Lab or Seth Lloyd, a professor of mechanical engineering, according to Reif's email. 1078
