Plans to build a new 4-acre, .5 million park in National City got a boost this week, thanks to a partnership with the federal government.The Environmental Health Coalition will help the city plan the park and the surrounding area, to make sure people can access the park without having to drive there.National City is one of just 10 communities across the country chosen for the Safe Routes to Parks Initiative.The new park will be near 22nd Street and Harding, where an empty field sits right now. As part of the construction, the EHC will help design safer streets around the park."Kids are trying to get from point a to point b and they have to cross through that main road," explains City Engineer Jose Lopez. "Without enhancements to the road, there's no way a 10-year old or 5-year old can cross the street."The EHC will help the city plan curb extensions, a median refuge island in crosswalks and local trails to let people walk through parks instead of along busy streets.According to a release announcing the partnership, communities chosen for the program had high rates of crime and violence, and also high rates of weight-related chronic diseases. The Safe Routes to Parks program  hopes to increase park use and help communities become healthier and safer.Right now the park is still in the planning stages. PALM CITY, Calif. (KGTV) — An auto theft suspect barricaded himself in an SUV at a South Bay motel, prompting a seven-hour SWAT standoff Thursday.SWAT officers surrounded the SUV in the E-Z 8 Motel on Outer Rd. at around 9 a.m. in the Palm City neighborhood, near Otay Mesa West.About 4 p.m., the suspect surrendered with his hands up.The suspect, identified as a man in his late 20s or early 30s, was the suspect of auto thefts in the South Bay and has a criminal history in the National City area, according to San Diego Police. Police had previously told 10News the man was a hit-and-run suspect.National City Police responded to the motel Thursday morning waiting for the suspect to exit, according to SDPD. The suspect and his girlfriend got into the parked SUV. When police surrounded the pair, the woman surrendered but the suspect did not. She was not arrested, police told 10News.Police initially believed the suspect was armed, they're continuing to search his motel room and vehicle for the gun. 1015

Pennsylvania GOP Rep. Charlie Dent announced Tuesday he is resigning in the "coming weeks," a decision that came after he first said he'd be retiring at the end of his term in Congress.The moderate Republican tweeted the decision came after discussions with his family and "careful reflection.""I am especially proud of the work I have done to give voice to the sensible center in our country that is often overlooked or ignored," he said in the statement. "It is my intention to aggressively advocate for responsible governance and pragmatic solutions in the coming years."In a statement Tuesday, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, a Democrat, thanked Dent for his service."Charlie Dent is a voice of reason and civility that breaks through the chaos and partisanship of Washington and he will be missed," he said.The governor's office also announced that there will be a special election to fill Dent's seat, but no set date yet.The Pennsylvania Supreme Court's February order creating new congressional districts in the commonwealth beginning next term included language that, if there were to be a special congressional election before the new term next January, it would be held under the 2011 congressional district map.Already, 43 House Republicans have announced this cycle they are retiring, running for another office or resigning outright, including Dent and House Speaker Paul Ryan. PALA MESA, CA (KGTV) -- 10News is now digging deeper in the history of violations issued to the company that operated the bus that was involved in this rainy Saturday's deadly crash on I-15 just south of Pala Mesa. “One life lost is too many,” says Chris Turner with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance. We spoke to him over FaceTime on Monday. The bus was operated by Executive Lines Inc., based in El Monte. According to the federal administration that oversees bus inspections, the company's fleet has had no crashes over the past two years, until now. However, they have had 26 maintenance violations, reportedly. After a November 2019 inspection, the same bus that was involved in this weekend's crash was reportedly issued two violations related to windshield wipers and spare fuses. Turner says violations like those should’ve been fixed right away. “Those need to be remedied before the vehicle is dispatched again,” he adds.10News spoke to attorney Nathan Morris about a separate major bus crash that happened last September in Utah, injuring 22 tourists. He's representing seven of the victims. “[I’m representing] three of those who were killed in the crash and their families as well as four others who were injured to various degrees,” he adds.Morris says bus passengers can look online for a snapshot of a company's safety. “They have a right as passengers of that bus to make sure that the driver and the companies and anybody else are held accountable for keeping the rules,” he says.“You enter the company's USDOT number and it will tell you whether or not they’re a safe company,” says Turner of researching bus companies online. A USDOT number is issued by the Department of Transportation. If you can’t find it on a company’s website, Turner says you can make a phone call. He adds, “One of the things they should readily give you when asked is the USDOT number and if not, that's immediately a red flag.
