In the nation’s capital, when it comes to immigration, much of the focus is often on the southern border and undocumented migrants. This month, though, it’s immigrants that have come to the U.S. legally who are about to face new challenges, as they try to become permanent residents or U.S. citizens.Public assistance, like Section 8 housing vouchers or food stamps, could play a big role in the fight over immigration.It is called the “public charge” rule and it is not new; it’s been on the books since the late 1800s. What is new, however, is what defines a public charge.Back in 1882, when immigrants arrived in the U.S., they had to prove they had cash and enough money to get where they were going, once they landed.Fast forward to 1996: that’s when the government decided other factors should be included as part of a green card application – like a person’s finances, health, age, education – and whether a sponsor, such as a family member who is a citizen or already has a green card, could financially vouch for you.Now, the rule will change again. Immigration officials will be able to deny a green card if they think some will “likely” end up needing public assistance, like welfare, food stamps or Medicaid.If that person needed such help in the past, it could count against them. Kroger is tapping Microsoft to help create grocery stores of the future, and keep up with Amazon and Walmart.The two companies announced a partnership on Monday that will bring digital shelves, price tags, and advertisements to two pilot stores in Ohio and Washington State, near each company's headquarters.The stores are designed to make it easier for customers and workers to navigate the stores, saving shoppers time and Kroger money.Kroger has been partnering with companies such as Nuro, Ocado, and Walgreens as it aims to speed up grocery delivery and pickup, and experiment with digital tools to support its network of physical stores.The grocery chain is trying to give shoppers — who are increasingly browsing and buying everything from consumer electronics to breakfast cereal online — more reasons to visit physical stores.Under the latest partnership, customers first build a shopping list using Kroger's Scan, Bag, Go self-checkout app.Then, the app works with cloud-based software and sensors in the store to guide them around as they check off items on their list. For example, if a customer is looking for pasta, the app will direct the customer to the correct aisle. As the customer nears the aisle and approaches the type of pasta they chose, a personal avatar — like a banana or an avocado —will light up that directs them to the right one. As part of JPMorgan Chase's new initiative, the company will no longer ask employees to reveal if they have a criminal past during the application process. The company said this initiative allows for those with criminal backgrounds to receive the same consideration as any other applicant, when their background has no bearing on job requirements.The company said that in 2018, the company hired 2,100 people with criminal backgrounds, which represented 10 percent of all new hires for the year. JPMorgan Chase said those hired generally had been charged with low level offenses such as disorderly conduct, personal drug possession and DUI. These applicants were hired for positions in entry-levels jobs such as transaction processing, and lending and account servicing.“Business has a responsibility to partner with policy, business and community leaders to create an economy that works for more people. In a press conference updating media members on the events of the Aug. 4 mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio, police chief Richard Biehl said the Dayton police department was updating the casualty count of those injured or killed by gunshots to 26.Previously, police had said that nine people were killed and 14 people were injured by gunshot wounds. Police now say 17 suffered gunshot injuries.The count does not include those who suffered injuries while trying to escape the gunman.During Tuesday's press conference Biehl walked media members through an updated timeline of the shooting.
