On its website, organizers with the American Bar Association (ABA) said the decision to cancel was made "as a result of the large number of speakers and attendees who were compelled to cancel their participation due to travel restrictions put in place by employers." The institute will not be rescheduled, according to ABA. The organization said refunds are being processed to attendees, but any travel reservations made will have to be handled individually.Leaders of the Experimental Biology conference set to take place April 4-7 canceled the massive gathering over COVID-19 as well. The conference expected more than 12,000 attendees at the San Diego Convention Center.The 2020 CIE Summit business technology summit at Marriott Marquis San Diego has been rescheduled from March 18-20 to Aug. 12-14 "out of an abundance of caution," organizers say.Organizers with the Future of Individualized Medicine 2020, scheduled for March 12-13 at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, also canceled their event "based on concern for the health of our registrants, speakers, exhibitors and staff."The American Association for Cancer Research's annual meeting set for April 24-29 has been canceled. A reschedule of the meeting is being planned for later this year.San Diego Opera's several performances of "Aging Magician" at the Balboa Theatre has been canceled after several performers opted not to travel due to the coronavirus. The San Diego Opera remains open though, with performances of "The Barber of Seville" and "The Falling and the Rising" still set for April and May.The 2020 GranFondo San Diego cyclist race, scheduled for April 5, has been postponed out of an abundance of caution for riders. Race organizers are working to determine when best to reschedule the event.The remainder of the San Diego Science and Engineering Festival has been postponed due to COVID-19 concerns. Organizers plan to reschedule the events for Fall 2020.San Diego Loyal soccer has postponed the team's home opener on March 14 until July 29 due to coronavirus concerns and in accordance with USD's decision to limit campus events on the same weekend, the team said.Schools:University of California San Diego will begin to deliver all lecture and discussion courses remotely starting in the spring quarter. All university-sponsored athletic events are scheduled to continue but will be "fan-less." The university also asked students and staff to postponed or cancel all events or meetings expected to have more than 100 people.San Diego State University will move all classes to virtual instruction following spring break, from April 6 through the end of the spring semester, with certain exceptions. SDSU will also suspend all spring break and summer study abroad programs. The university, however, is not suspending third-party partner programs abroad, citing authority. Southwestern College in the South Bay is moving all of its in-person classes to online or distributed instruction from March 16-20. In addition to canceling “large public events” at its main campus and satellite campuses, SWC’s athletic events will go on but will not have fans. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Steele Canyon High School is one of two evacuation sites run by the American Red Cross for people affected by the Valley Fire, but they're not housing people like they normally would. Instead, they're acting as a resource facility for families like the Roberts'."Mine was one of the only houses in the neighborhood that went up," Alana Roberts said. Her weekend was turned upside down when she got word of the Valley Fire, which went from 100 to more than 10,000 acres in less than 48 hours, claimed her home. "I was in Oceanside and we raced to get in and as soon as we were in our truck, cops said 'you need to go now'", Roberts recalled.She was able to gather just a few belongings. "It was me and my husband who went in and grabbed what we could and let animals free. I had chickens and I couldn’t get them all."And now, she's one of the dozens of people seeking relief and a place to sleep at one of American Red Cross' evacuation sites."Someone gave me dog food, food for the kids, and we have the restrooms so we can kind of wash up." These sites typically provide shelter for families seeking relief, this time around, they couldn't."Outdoor sheltering is basically what we’re doing, people are in the lots in their cars and are acquiring hotel vouchers to put people in lodging," said Earl Potts with the American Red Cross. So far, 60 people have received hotel vouchers but last night they ran out, forcing people like Roberts to hunker down in their cars, trailers, and RVs. "We figure the family will stay together, and hunker down together."The Red Cross said as the holiday weekend comes to an end, they're hoping to get at least 200 more rooms available. "We’re able to provide meals at certain times of day and a place to park and sleep which makes it less but more of a priority situation."Alana said she's just thankful her family is safe and is going to return to what's left of her home once they're given the go-ahead."I don’t know if its truly set in. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego will begin building its alternative to San Diego Gas & Electric, which it says could lower bills by about 5 percent. The City Council voted 7-2 Monday to begin creating what's called a Community Choice Aggregator -- an energy company that would help the city reach its goal of reaching 100 percent renewable energy by 2035. San Diego will begin approaching approaching other cities in this county, and Orange County, to create a region-wide provider. The idea is the more cities involved, the more negotiating power the city will have to buy energy to sell to residents. "Community Choice Aggregators can and will save money, but the people will bear the real consequences and reap the benefits of the decisions you're making are their children and grandchildren," John Atcheson, a Rancho Bernardo resident, told the council Monday. In a statement, Mayor Kevin Faulconer said this would give San Diegans a choice when it comes to how they get their power. "For decades San Diegans have only had one option on where they get their electricity," Faulconer said. "Community Choice will change that by injecting healthy competition into the marketplace, allowing customers to benefit from lower energy costs, and pick greener energy sources to power their home or business."The move is not without risks. Councilman Scott Sherman voted against the plan, noting the city's recent trouble with its existing utility, the water department. The department is undergoing major transformation after an audit found thousands were billed incorrectly. Plus, start-up costs could be as much as million, and residents would have to pay exit fees to SDG&E. A spokeswoman for SDG&E said it fully supports the city in creating the alternative. Disney characters create a magical winter wonderland during the "Believe ... in Holiday Magic" fireworks show and "A Christmas Fantasy" parade with Elsa, Mickey, Santa, and others. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Sky10 was there as police and firefighters responded to a car crash in San Carlos Friday evening. The crash, which happened just after 5:30 p.m., happened in the 6200 block of Del Paso Avenue, not far from Patrick Henry High School. The female driver hit the gas pedal instead of the brake when approaching the garage door, police said. She hit the washer and dryer, pushing them through the wall and into the house. The driver and occupants of the home were not injured in the crash. Firefighters helped pull down the garage door and advised the family to have a structural expert check the walls where the washer and dryer pushed through.   700
