SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Members of a newly formed Guardian Angels chapter in Pacific Beach went on patrol for the first time Saturday night.Members of the Sacramento Chapter traveled to San Diego to train the new volunteers. Administrator Sarah Bonesteel joined after a neighborhood crime walk, saying "crime is getting out of control, we've lost our parks, and our library and things like that."RELATED: Guardian Angels look to start street patrols in Pacific BeachThe Guardian Angels are a national crime prevention nonprofit organization that started in New York in 1979. The group said it created chapters in over 130 cities in 13 countries.While the group has several programs to prevent crime, the most visible are its street patrols. The Pacific Beach Chapter hopes to provide a safe environment after the bars close.Guardian Angels patrol in groups of at least two while wearing red berets and uniforms, and say the patrols are meant to serve as a visual deterrent and aim to avoid violent confrontations.Angels on patrols are unarmed but trained in self-defense to protect themselves in case a situation becomes physical. They hope they do not have to use their training.The organization conducts background checks on new members to ensure everyone's safety. 1270

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In three weeks San Diego County will elect its next district attorney,  and in a recent poll a large number of voters indicated that they're still undecided. The results of our scientific 10News Union-Tribune poll shows the battle between Summer Stephan and challenger Genevieve Jones-Wright is wide open. If the election were held today, Summer Stephan would get 35 percent of the vote. Genevieve Jones-Wright would get 22 percent and 43 percent of those polled said they are undecided. "Those polls are consistent with what our campaign research shows," Jones-Wright told 10News. "We knew we were up against a political machine and it really is no surprise to me that she's up on the polls."Progressive candidate Jones-Wright says Stephan got a head start, by being appointed to the district attorney job when Bonnie Dumanis left. Jones-Wright said she thinks the poll shows her campaign is gaining steam.Stephan was encouraged by the poll numbers. "This is very encouraging, what you're telling me, because it shows that what we're doing is working," she told 10News. "That San Diegans are enjoying that we're one of the safest urban regions in the country and that they really prefer experience over an experiment."The poll shows that Stephan's voter base is republican, white and over the age of 35. It shows that Wright's voter base is younger, more racially mixed and primarily democratic. On Monday, Summer Stephan pulled out of a community forum, one which both she and Genevieve Jones-Wright accepted to face off. 1581

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — MiraCosta College is expanding upon a state promise to help make community college more affordable.MiraCosta College announced Tuesday plans to offer free tuition for all first-time college students for the first two years of classes at the campus. Part of the MiraCosta Promise, the plan would be available for all first-time students starting in fall 2019 who are enrolled in at least 12 units per semester.Students must also file a free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or a California Dream Act (CADAA) application.RELATED: Cost of college: What parents and students can expect to pay for admissionThe waiver is dependent upon the passage of Assembly Bill 2, which expands the California College Promise program. Former Gov. Jerry Brown signed the promise program into law in 2017, which covers the first year of tuition at the state's 115 community colleges."This program removes a significant hurdle for college-bound students; tuition and mandatory fees," Sunita Cooke, Superintendent/President of MiraCosta College, said in a release. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Jessica Reilly, a Navy Air Traffic Controller currently based out of San Diego, has a high-stress job, but turns to her artistic side as an outlet. She combines her passion for the Navy with creating comics, adding a little bit of Dungeons and Dragons (which she learned from her husband) to create Gobbo the Goblin, a Navy sailor.“I have managed to breed a comic series for the Navy that is also targeted toward Dungeons and Dragons players,” she said, laughing.She said she’s loved art since she was a child, and started drawing her first comics on whiteboards while aboard Navy ships. It’s grown from there. She has a cartoon version of herself that goes on adventures with Gobbo. She said her real-life experiences combined with stories from other sailors motivate the storylines, frequently making fun of the daily woes of Navy life.“There is an outlet and a want for people to see comics kind of tongue and cheek of their own culture,” she said.She said this comedic relief is a good mental break from a tense job.“My job, even though it’s stressful, especially as an Air Traffic Controller, I can take a break, and I can remind everybody else that it’s not so stressful,” she said.Her art has turned into a family business. Her husband, who is a Navy veteran and currently in the Army reserves, writes comic books and she illustrates them. She said the first time they teamed up, they brought the comic books to a show and they sold out on the spot. Their company, Five Realms, was supposed to have a table at Comic-Con, which was canceled this year. To win a spot at the show, they had to submit their comic book, which was reviewed by judges. “It’s a huge accomplishment for me and my husband and unfortunately it didn’t happen,” she said, adding that they hope to be there next year.Jessica’s work has been noticed by the Navy. She’s been selected to do an Instagram takeover of the Navy’s “At the Helm” page during the week of October 25.
