In the 50th District anchored in San Diego County, Republican former Rep. Darrell Issa padded his lead to more than 16,000 votes. LOCKPORT, N.Y. — Theresa Mellas spent eight weeks on the front lines of the COVID crisis, then decided she needed a different kind of challenge to help her take that experience all in.Mellas booked a one-way flight to Portland, Oregon, bought a bike off of Craigslist that night, and hit the road the next morning.Almost 3,500 miles later she rode right into the ocean at Staten Island last week.But let’s go back to March. Mellas was visiting her twin sister in Germany when she touched back down in Lockport, New York right at the start of the COVID crisis.She’s been a traveling physician assistant for almost ten years and that forced her to have a tough conversation with herself.“What am I doing here? I’m a healthcare provider. Let’s step it up, T. Let’s do this,” she said to herself.She said her parents encouraged her to take up the call from Governor Andrew Cuomo for help at the frontlines. It was a challenging time.“The contract was for 25 days straight. Straight, yeah,” said Mellas. “And then you could renew your contract, so I did.”On top of working in the ICU at a hospital in North Central Bronx overnights, 7 pm to 7 am, Mellas picked up some work in urgent care swabbing COVID patients during the day.“I knew it was going to be hard, and it was hard. Dealing with patients that are suffering, their family members…that was really really tough. But I think we all came out stronger on the other side of it.”Most of Mellas’s patients were on ventilators and she called the experience “grim”, but she said she was also inspired during her time there by all the people that took up the call, as well.“People come together from all over the U.S. Not knowing anything about this illness,” she said.“And then [in] a complete disaster crisis, I mean crisis. It was wild. To see all of these health care providers come together and say, ‘What do we know, let’s pool our knowledge. Let’s try to figure this out. Let’s try to save lives’… that was just awesome. It was awesome.”The last days of May, Mellas’s sister drove her back to their parents’ house in Lockport. She wouldn’t be there long.Mellas, looking for a way to decompress, bought a one-way ticket to Portland.“‘I can’t leave the US, so I’ll just bike across the US. That seems like a really good thing to do,’” she said she told herself. “I really don’t have any other explanation, It was a very impetuous decision.”There wasn’t really a plan. Mellas had some friends she wanted to see and she had never been to Jackson Hole. So, she picked a few locations in the States and connected the dots in-between.“I had google maps, and I would look at the roads and kind of just figure it out the night before is essentially what I would do.”Biking anywhere between 100-130 miles per day, she rode all but seven days on the 40-day trip back to the East Coast.It was her faith she said that got her through her time in New York City and across the United States.“I was on my bike, I was just praying every day. I was like 'I could be in the ICU. I have two healthy lungs, I have a healthy body, healthy mind'… I am so blessed right now. I am so blessed.”And in the end, Mellas maintains she discovered the purpose of the trip as she continued and it really wasn’t about her, but about the people, she’s met in this journey.“I can’t emphasize that the people that I met complete strangers. They offered me food, they offered me showers, you needed a place to stay. I’d knock on people’s doors ‘can I sleep next to your cornfield?’ I met so many incredible people. People came together, people are rallying. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Barron Hilton, the hotelier and philanthropist who led the Hilton hotel chain, has died in Los Angeles at age 91.Hilton, who succeeded his father, Conrad Hilton, as president and chief executive officer of Hilton Hotels Corp. in 1966 and served in that capacity for 30 years, died Thursday at his home, according to an obituary provided by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation.He was invited by his father to join Hilton Hotels Corp. in 1954 as a vice president, the foundation said.After taking over as president and CEO, "he was known for creating shareholder value and expanding through innovative real estate transactions, including franchising and a bold move into the Las Vegas gaming market," the statement said. "From 1966 to 1996, he generated an average annual rate of return to shareholders of 15% with dividends."Hilton was the founding owner of the Los Angeles Chargers of the American Football League."Simply put, the modern NFL would not be what it is today without the vision of Barron Hilton," Chargers owner and Chairman of the Board Dean Spanos said.Under Hilton's leadership, the team, which moved to San Diego in 1961 following its inaugural season, won five divisional titles and one AFL championship during his six years as owner. LONG BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) — Long Beach Police and transit officials are investigating whether a crime was committed this week when a man in a suit dragged an unconscious, partially naked man off a train, leaving him on the platform.[Warning: graphic video] Cell phone video shows the moments when the man dragged the other man off the train at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. The man recording the video says the unconscious man had just suffered a seizure, Los Angeles ABC-affiliate KABC reported.The man in the suit then grabs the unconscious man's belongings and tosses them off the train and returns to his seat.The man recording the video argued with the man in the suit about what he had done. The two of them continued to argue for about five minutes before the man in the suit gets off the train to check on the unconscious man.Medics eventually arrive to help the unconscious man, who was taken to a nearby hospital. His condition is not yet clear.Police and train officials are now investigating if the man in the suit committed a crime by dragging the man off the train."Obviously, this is very disturbing and we never want to see this on our system. We're getting all the facts including reviewing the video from the train and the platform," Los Angeles Metro officials told KABC in part through a statement. 1329

Duncan Hunter want a federal judge to reject an attempt by prosecutors to introduce evidence that the congressman used campaign funds to finance a string of extramarital relationships, a court filing said Friday.Prosecutors are seeking permission "to focus the jury's attention on Mr. Hunter's infidelity" with evidence that isn't necessary for a jury to evaluate the case, they wrote. To allow it would present "substantial risk of unfair prejudice."Allegations about the married Republican congressman's affairs were outlined in a government court filing Monday, connected to charges he and his wife illegally spent more than 0,000 in campaign funds on trips, meals and other personal expenses.Prosecutors are seeking permission to introduce details of the romantic affairs in U.S. District Court in San Diego, which they say are necessary to "demonstrate Hunter's ... intent to break the law and to establish his motive to embezzle from his campaign."Margaret Hunter pleaded guilty this month to one corruption count.
