The US attorney based in Pittsburgh has started the process to seek the death penalty for the man accused of killing 11 worshippers at a synagogue Saturday, an assault during Shabbat services that reverberated across the country and around the world. On Monday, suspected gunman Robert Bowers was brought into federal court in a wheelchair for his first appearance. Wearing a blue shirt and handcuffs -- which US marshals removed so he could sign paperwork -- he spoke only to answer questions from the judge. The shooting struck the heart of historically Jewish Squirrel Hill and spurred sadness and anger as citizens learned the names of those gunned down by the killer."It's hard to understand how significant these losses are to our community unless you understand the significance and intimacy of Squirrel Hill," said Tree of Life congregant Jesse Rabner said."The community is knit so tight that one life affects thousands. It's a norm to be Jewish in Squirrel Hill, and it's a loving and peaceful community."Rabbi Hazzan Jeffrey Myers with Tree of Life said his synagogue will rebuild and "be back stronger and better than ever.""You can cut of some branches from our tree, but Tree of Life has been in Pittsburgh for 154 years. We're not going anywhere," the rabbi told CNN's "New Day" on Monday. "I will not let hate close down my building."Attorney General Jeff Sessions must ultimately give the OK to pursue the death penalty for the alleged gunman, Robert Bowers, the Justice Department said. The attack was the deadliest against Jews in US history."At this point in our investigation, we're treating it as a hate crime," Scott Brady, the US attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania, said Sunday. When asked if the shooting could be considered an instance of domestic terrorism, Brady said there would need to be evidence the suspect tried to propagate a particular ideology through violence. In an address on Monday in Boston, Sessions labeled the assault a "murderous rampage" and said, "This was not just an attack on the Jewish faith. It was attack on all people of faith, and it was an attack on America's values of protecting those of faith. It cannot, it will not, be tolerated."Sessions said authorities will conduct the case "with vigor and integrity.""He'll be subjected to the death penalty perhaps," the attorney general said of the suspect.Bowers is expected back in court for a preliminary hearing Thursday morning. While two public defenders appeared with him in court Monday, the lawyer or lawyers who will handle his case going forward have yet to be appointed. He is being without bond.Brady will present the case to a federal grand jury within 30 days, he said.  2711

The three-star general is leaving Puerto Rico, ending his mission of providing relief from the devastation of Hurricane Maria.Troops are being pulled out, too, along with helicopters that have flown supplies and equipment to communities cut off by landslides and broken roads.Yet government statistics say power is still not on for more than half of homes and businesses, and water is out for more than 1 in 10.Lieutenant General Jeffrey Buchanan recognizes that Puerto Rico is far from back to normal, but seven weeks after the hurricane hit, he insists the time is right to pass the baton."I think we're in the right place to transition," he tells CNN on the last day of his deployment. 696

The U.S. Postal Service on Tuesday said it could not meet a federal judge’s order to sweep processing centers for undelivered mail-in ballots, arguing that doing so would disrupt its Election Day operations. U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan of Washington, D.C., gave the agency until Tuesday afternoon to search 27 facilities in several battleground areas for outstanding ballots and send out those votes immediately. In its response, the Postal Service said it had already conducted rounds of morning checks at all its processing hubs. Further, the agency said it has been performing daily reviews of all 220 facilities handling election mail and planned another sweep hours before polling places closed Tuesday. 726

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screened the highest number of travelers on Sunday since the start of the pandemic as more than a million Americans traveled home following the Thanksgiving holiday. The TSA screened 1.2 million passengers on Sunday, marking its highest total since March 16 — just days after President Donald Trump delivered a primetime address announcing travel restrictions to Europe as COVID-19 began to spread in the U.S. While TSA screening numbers aren't representative of all travel throughout the U.S., the number gives officials an idea of how many people boarded an airplane in the U.S. in a given timeframe.Despite the uptick in travelers, the amount of Americans traveling following Thanksgiving was nowhere near the amount that traveled on the Sunday following Thanksgiving in 2019 — on that day, TSA screen 2.9 million Americans. The uptick in travel comes despite warnings from the CDC against traveling for Thanksgiving amid a spike in COVID-19 cases. Top ranking health officials are urging anyone who traveled to attend a Thanksgiving gathering to get tested for COVID-19 even if they do not have symptoms. On Sunday, Dr. Deborah Birx — a member of the White House coronavirus task force — said anyone who attended a Thanksgiving gathering over the weekend should "assume" they have COVID-19 and take precautions against spreading the virus in the coming weeks. The U.S. has seen more than 4 million people become infected with the virus in November alone — a number that represents 30% of all cases recorded in the country since the pandemic began.Last week, Dr. Anthony Fauci — the U.S.'s leading infectious disease expert — warned that the U.S. could see a "spike superimposed on a spike" in cases in the weeks after Thanksgiving if Americans continued to travel. 1821
