The city is now spending .6 million per month to rent the convention center from its own nonprofit.The Union-Tribune reports that in November, the city spent 0 dollars per person per day for about 900 residents, totaling .7 million.Now with the new outbreak, a group is renewing calls to close the center and place the residents in county-secured hotels subsidized with federal money to stop the spread.“We could have kept several hotels open and the staff employed and put the money back into the local community,” said activist Shane Parmely.The county has secured 806 hotel rooms for people to isolate, about a third of which are currently occupied.In a statement, the city said it will continue to work closely with the county to ensure it is providing the best protection and medical care in accordance with public-health guidelines. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A deer mouse found in Warner Springs tested positive for the potentially deadly hantavirus, San Diego County Vector Control and environmental health officials announced Friday.Vector Control officials said the mouse was found during a routine monitoring operation. Multiple mice collected by Vector Control have tested positive for the virus in areas of north and east county, including Fallbrook, Boulevard, Bonsall, 4S Ranch and Potrero, since January.With each instance, county officials have reminded residents to avoid sweeping or vacuuming rodent droppings, which can kick the virus up into the air.Residents are advised to use so-called "wet cleaning" methods like a diluted bleach spray, disinfectants or a sponge and a mop to clean up wild rodent matter like urine, feces and saliva. Cleaned areas should also be well- ventilated as well to ensure the virus does not linger.Hantavirus is not uncommon in San Diego County's more rural and undeveloped areas, but residents can avoid exposure by keeping rodents out of their homes, sheds and garages, according to Vector Control. Wild mice, in particular, are the virus' main carriers.There is no cure or vaccine for hantavirus, which can cause deadly infections. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 21-year-old man who fatally stabbed a transient in Ocean Beach was sentenced today to 15 years to life in state prison. Noah Mitchell Jackson, 21, was convicted earlier this year of second-degree murder for the June 22, 2017, killing of 65-year-old Walter ``Ras'' Riley, an Ohio native nicknamed ``the Incense Man'' due to his practice of selling aromatic burning sticks at local farmers' markets. Officers sent just before 12:30 a.m. to the 1900 block of Bacon Street found Riley lying on the sidewalk with stab wounds to his upper body. He was pronounced dead at UCSD Medical Center. Deputy District Attorney Michael Reilly said the victim was stabbed five times, with the killing blow entering his back, breaking several ribs and puncturing his heart. RELATED: Police search for man suspected in death of homeless man in Ocean BeachJackson confessed to a friend that he stabbed Riley, according to the prosecutor, who said Jackson told the friend, ``I got that guy. I stabbed that (expletive).'' ``Those are the words of a murderer,'' Reilly told jurors. Reilly said that some time after the killing, Jackson had a friend drive him to Kellogg's Beach, where Jackson threw the murder weapon and his cellphone into the water. Police divers were not able to recover the knife or the phone. Jackson's attorney, Eugene Iredale, alleged the friend was pressured by police to incriminate Jackson and was offered immunity for his testimony in the trial. The prosecutor alleged that Jackson also told the friend that he ``handled'' the victim because Riley had previously spat on Jackson's sister and insulted her. However, Iredale denied this suspected motive, as he said his client had substance abuse problems that led him to make several ``completely random statements'' to friends following the date of the killing. The attorney said the spitting incident involving Jackson's sister never occurred and ``God only knows'' why Jackson said it had. Iredale said police originally had 20 to 30 suspects, but centered on Jackson due to a 911 call made about 90 minutes prior to Riley's stabbing. In that call, a recording of which was played for the jury, the mother of one of Jackson's friends said Jackson was at her home displaying erratic behavior and saying he wanted to commit suicide. He'd just gotten into an argument with his girlfriend, then left the house, she told a dispatcher. Iredale alleged the clothing description she provided police -- a white sweatshirt and jeans -- vaguely resembled the attire of a suspect captured on surveillance footage running through Ocean Beach following the killing. That footage was publicly released shortly after Riley's death. Iredale said the man in the footage was Riley's killer, but looked nothing like his client. SAN CARLOS, Calif. (KGTV) -- A grandmother and several children were forced to run out of a San Carlos home that burst into flames Saturday night. The fire broke out on Park Ridge Boulevard in San Carlos around 10 p.m. Saturday. Fire crews were able to stop the flames from spreading to a nearby canyon. Neighbors say they heard what sounded like explosions before they ran out and saw the home on fire. A woman was home watching her grandchildren when the house caught fire. All those inside were able to make it out safely. San Diego Fire-Rescue says it was initially challenging to battle the flames because the closest hydrants are located hundreds of feet away. “I went across the street and pounded on the door and the window to make sure that nobody was in there. Don’t think they were. There was just a lot of explosions and tires I guess blowing up. It was just In full flames when it happened,” one neighbor said.
