A man charged with murder in the Gary, Indiana area remains at large after he escaped from a prisoner transport vehicle on Monday.According to the Chicago Tribune, Leon Taylor, 22, escaped from a vehicle driven by a private contractor when the driver stopped at a McDonald's drive-thru near Gary.Video released by the Lake County (Indiana) Sheriff's Office shows Taylor open the door of the vehicle while it was stopped in the drive-thru. Taylor ran across a busy street as the driver of the vehicle chased him.Taylor was being extradited from Texas to the Lake County Jail in Crown Point, Indiana, by REDI Transport. Initially, the REDI Transport driver told the Lake County Sheriff's Office that Taylor had escaped from the video."After watching this video, I am highly disturbed and disappointed by the procedures the private transportation driver used during the transfer of this suspect to our jail," Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. said in a news release. "I find it appalling that REDI Transports failed to use appropriate caution and may have put the public at risk."Police initially said that Taylor had been wearing a belly chain, handcuffs and a leg brace at the time of his escape. However, according to WLS-TV in Chicago the sheriff's office says the video now shows that Taylor likely was not handcuffed and that security footage shows him struggling with the leg braces throughout the trip."We believe shackles could have prevented the suspect from getting away," Martinez said.REDI Transport, which is based in Green Bay, Wisconsin, says it has opened an investigation into the incident."REDI Transports continues to cooperate fully with those investigating the prisoner escape that occurred yesterday afternoon in Gary, Indiana," the company said in a statement on Tuesday. "We are also conducting our own internal investigation into what happened and are determining what procedural or process changes may be needed to ensure this does not happen again."Taylor is wanted on murder charges in connection with an East Chicago, Indiana homicide. A gunman opened fire inside of a Cheltenham Township, Pa. Walmart on Tuesday, leaving five people shot and several others with non-gunshot injuries, NBC Philadelphia reported, citing law enforcement officials. The incident took place around 6:15 p.m., and has since been contained. Eyewitnesses told NBC Philadelphia that the shooting took place at a cash register inside of Walmart.A gunman reportedly took the gun out of his waistband and shot five people during an altercation. A pregnant woman, who was not shot, was injured trying to get away. Two police officers were also injured during a fight trying to apprehend the suspect. The gunman reportedly fired 10 gunshots inside of the Walmart before fleeing. All eight victims are expected to survive. Two people were taken into custody after the suspected gunman and a possible accomplice tried to flee.  917

A Catholic priest was beaten while praying at his church in Merrillville, Indiana, and authorities are investigating the attack as a hate crime.The Rev. Basil John Hutsko told police he was attacked Monday morning inside the St. Michaels Byzantine Catholic Church as he was praying in the sacristy.The attacker "grabbed him by the neck, threw him down on the floor and immediately started slamming his head against the floor. Both sides, front and back," Merrillville Police Chief Joseph Petruch told CNN affiliate WBBM.The assailant left Hutsko battered, bruised and unconscious. And during the assault the attacker yelled, "'This is for all the little kids,'" Petruch said.It was an apparent reference to the clergy sex abuse scandal that has rocked the Catholic Church in recent years. A dispute is brewing between city officials in Denton, Texas and the parents of a 10-year-old boy with autism after body cam footage was released last week from an incident in April showing a school resource officer body slamming the boy, WFAA-TV reported.According to an account of events given to WFAA, the boy, Thomas Brown, poked other students and was ignoring his teachers when a school resource officer was called to the special needs classroom. The boy then backed into a cubby as school staff and the officer closed in. Video of the incident shows the officer picking up the boy as the boy began kicking and screaming. Moments later, the boy was brought to the ground, and placed in handcuffs. Thomas' parents said the use of force was "excessive.""I see a little boy hiding," mother Emily Brown told WFAA. "Not doing anything that's an imminent serious harm to someone else."Brown said she realized just how serious the incident was after she got home and noticed bruises on her son's body. Both the Denton school district and city of Denton both disagreed with Thomas' parents."The safety of all of our students is a top priority and we have protocols in place to ensure this," the Denton Independent School District said in a statement. "In this instance, protocol was followed, with the school resource officer making the determination, after all other efforts to deescalate the situation proved ineffective, that the student was a detriment to his own safety and that of the other students and staff."In the city's statement to WFAA, it claimed that Thomas "was posing a serious threat of injury to himself or others."According to ABC News, the Browns plan on suing the school district and city over the incident.  1791

A group of siblings are back together after being separated in foster care.A Texas couple with three biological children officially adopted the five siblings over a Zoom call in May, doubling the size of their family.Andi Bonura says she and her husband, Thomas, had been wanting to adopt after years of pregnancy issues. Their three existing children, Joey, Sadie and Daphne, were born premature. They also lost one child during a pregnancy and another died in the NICU.So, in 2017, the couple got licensed to become foster parents. Their first foster child was Bryson, who is now 2 years old. The couple then began fostering two of Bryson’s older siblings, David and Gabrielle.Eventually, the two final siblings, Thomas and Carter, started visiting the Bonura home and asked if they could also come live with them, according to Bonura.Bonura says that one day, she got a call saying their foster children’s biological parents were terminating their rights to the kids and they were given the option to adopt them. They said yes.Bonura says finally adopting the children was so freeing and felt wonderful.“We had been working so hard for years to get them all together, to bond as a family and it just feels so amazing to all of us, knowing we are a family, finally,” said Bonura.If you’re considering becoming a foster parent or adopting, Bonura says to do it if you can.“It will be the single most important and meaningful thing in your life,” she said. “The struggles to get to the place, your goal, is worth every tear.
