Amnesty International awarded Colin Kaepernick its Ambassador of Conscience Award on Saturday for his public protest against racial and social injustice."The Ambassador of Conscience award celebrates the spirit of activism and exceptional courage, as embodied by Colin Kaepernick," Salil Shetty, the human rights group's secretary-general, said in a statement. "He is an athlete who is now widely recognized for his activism because of his refusal to ignore or accept racial discrimination."The award is Amnesty International's highest honor, according to its website. Past winners include Nelson Mandela, Malala Yousafzai, U2, Alicia Keys and Ai Weiwei. Kaepernick was presented with the award at a ceremony in Amsterdam, Netherlands.Kaepernick, a former quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, became the subject of controversy when he kneeled during the national anthembefore several 2016 NFL preseason and regular-season games in protest of police shootings of African-American men and other social injustices faced by black people in the United States."To me, this is something that has to change," Kaepernick said in an August 2016 interview. An early analysis of census data shows California and New York may lose a seat in the House, while Florida would gain two. This could mean Florida in the near future would have more electoral votes than New York.The analysis was done by William Frey, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institute, a nonprofit public policy organization, based on population estimates from mid-2020 released by the Census Bureau.Frey said the estimates released by the Census Bureau show that between July 2019 and July 2020, the population in the U.S. grew by .35%. That’s the lowest annual population growth rate since the turn of the last century, and that could mean the decade 2010-2020 may have the lowest decade growth rate in centuries.This low rate of growth and some “educated estimates” from Frey on new state-level data, could mean that seven states gain representatives in Congress and ten states lose some.One result of the Census is calculating the number of seats in the House of Representatives a state should have. Every decade, the Census Bureau adjusts the number of seats each state receives based on changes in population, the process is called reapportionment.Frey estimates that Texas will gain three representatives in the House, Florida wil gain two, and Arizona, Montana, Colorado, North Carolina and Oregon will gain one. Meanwhile, Alabama, California, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Rhode Island could all lose one representative, according to Frey’s estimates.Changing the number of seats in the House also changes how many votes the state gets in the Electoral College; electoral votes are the number of seats a state has in the House plus two senators.California currently has 55 electoral votes, with the next highest as Texas with 38 votes currently. New York and Florida are next, with 29 each; if New York were to lose one and Florida gain two, it would be the first time Florida had more votes than New York and would make Florida the third most represented state in the House.“This reapportionment will also affect the Electoral College in future presidential elections. There are a mix of “red” and “blue” states among those gaining and losing seats. Thus, it is difficult to predict how these changes will benefit future Republican and Democratic presidential candidates,” Frey wrote in his analysis.Frey’s estimates are based on early data shared by the Census Bureau. Both women invested thousands of dollars in the popular clothing company LuLaRoe and now worry they could be out some serious cash.Denver-based KMGH talked to and exchanged messages with at least 15 different women, they all told a similar story about a business they loved and broken promises.The California-based company was slapped with a class-action lawsuit accusing it of running a pyramid scheme. The company fired back saying that the lawsuits are “factually inaccurate and misinformed,” The Associated Press reported.“Plaintiffs and so many other consultants were never able to realize any actual profit and, as a result, they failed,” the Oct. 23 filing says. “They failed even though they were committed and put in the time and effort. They failed because they were doomed from the start.”Keenan said she started selling LuLaRoe about a year ago after she fell in love with the company’s comfy dresses. The mom of two teenage boys works part-time as a massage therapist and wanted a new challenge.“You heard stories. You know, I know one lady -- she was able to buy her house full out, and her husband was able to retire. You know, you hear those stories and I knew her personally,” said Keenan.She spent about ,500 to start up her business and estimates she has bought somewhere around ,000 in clothes. She resigned this summer and the company sent her an email stating she would get a 100-percent refund if she mailed the leftover clothes back.Keenan says she was in the middle of a move and by the time she went to mail the clothes back, the company had cancelled that offer.“It was very disappointing, it just kind of made you sick to your stomach,” said Keenan. She has 15 tote bags full of clothing that she wants to sell, it’s probably worth at least ,000.Keenan is far from alone. KMGH’s Liz Gelardi talked with a woman from Westminster, Colorado who believes she has anywhere from ,000 to ,000 in inventory. A woman from Greeley says she is left with ,000 and a single mom from Ft. Collins has ,000 worth of inventory crammed in a two-bedroom apartment with her kids.The women who talked to KMGH about their experiences all wanted a way to make a little extra money and like the appeal of working from home. Some of the women who were “trainers” -- meaning they had people working under them said they did make money.Kimberly Jarrett said she met lots of friends through LuLaRoe and said it really helped her family have a better life. She decided to part ways because she felt like the company’s values shifted.“They had their policies and they ended this offer and it hurt a lot of people and it hurt two of my personal teammates,” said Jarrett.She has an estimated 500 pieces of clothing sitting in her living room. Ex-retailers feel like they’ve been left with no choice but to discount the items even though they had been told not to.LuLaRoe is offering a 90 percent refund, but several women told KMGH they’ve been waiting months to get their money back. Jarrett said if she sent the clothes back she would have to pay for shipping and all her bonuses would be deducted from the amount she was owed.Many of the same consultants also told KMGH they knew what they were getting into and understood they would be taking on some when they opened a business. They also expressed concern about hurting the other consultants if they sold their merchandise at a discount.“The people that are trying to hold on I wish them all the best and I want them to hold on and I want them to succeed… but I’m just going to have to watch and hope for best for them,” Jarrett said. 3765

That's because of the Federal Reserve's decision to keep interest rates low.Rates that were over 2.5% a year ago are down to under 1% now. But there are some other accounts that can get you a better return.“Something known as a rewards checking account might be a better option,” said Greg McBride, Chief Financial Analyst at Bankrate.com. “These are accounts that typically pay higher yields, higher than even online savings accounts, you might find 1.5, 2, 2.5%, but you have to meet certain qualifications each month to earn that deal.”Rewards checking accounts typically are offered by smaller community banks and credit unions. They usually come with monthly requirements though, like direct deposit, online bill pay, enrolling in e-statements, and using your debit card a certain amount of times. But those are things many people already use.In terms of saving versus paying down debt now, experts say to save.“That's really critical. No one knows what’s going to happen down the road in terms of jobs or income, so having some money put away will help you sleep at night,” said McBride.Just to give you an idea, you could make by saving around ,000 a year at 3% interest rate, which a rewards account might pay.That’s compared to just 60 cents in an average savings account, which only has about a .06% interest rate. 1556
