SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer says the city's Get It Done mobile app has led to thousands of tons of trash being removed. In the app's first three years, more than 7,000 tons of trash, debris, and waste has been removed from public spaces around the city. The city broke that number up into:Illegal dumping/litter removal - 4,440 tons of wasteEncampment debris cleanup - 2,528 tons of wasteThe app was made available in 2017 to encourage residents to report trash and other concerns in their neighborhoods. Since then, city crews have responded to more than 6,500 reports and conducted more than 32,000 proactive cleanups. The average response time has also shrunk from 25 days in 2017 to five days in 2020, the city says.Council members have also been able to use the data received from the app to identify hot spots in their districts. The app is part of the city's "Clean SD" program. The program was born out of a need to clean unsanitary areas in the public, including homeless encampments, according to the city. Since 2017, the city has sanitized and power washed 18,000 city blocks, or about 1,800 miles of sidewalk."Clean SD is all about restoring a sense of pride in our communities and making sure our neighborhoods are clean and safe for everyone. Our cleanup crews have accomplished that and so much more," Faulconer said this week from the site of a frequent illegal dumping site in Paradise Hills. "This has truly been a citywide push to beautify our neighborhoods and we encourage San Diegans to keep using the ‘Get It Done’ app to report issues that we need to address in their community." 1631

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County farmers are finding innovative solutions to problems brought on by climate change."It's getting hotter and drier, and we're in longer, more frequent droughts," says Al Stehly, who manages 15 farms in the North County. "So we have to use the water we do have better."Stehly says water is the biggest concern as temperatures rise."It's just going to get hotter and drier," he says. "So we've got to squeeze everything out of that sponge that we can without depleting the resource."The County Farm Bureau agrees, saying it's up to farmers to get creative when they plant. The farming industry is a .7 billion business in San Diego."We are forced to adapt," says Farm Bureau Executive Director Hannah Gbeh. "Facing global climate change, our farmers come up with the most innovative solutions possible."One solution found in many farms is increasing density in their fields. Stehly has moved some of his trees to just a few feet apart. That lets him water more trees with the same amount of water. It also puts more shade on the ground, which helps control evaporation. He says his grapefruit grove that usually produces 7-800 boxes per acre is now up to 1300 boxes. He's also cutting the trees shorter, which makes harvesting easier. And he's replaced some of his "high-water" crops like avocados with plants that use less water, like grapes and coffee."We have to use as little water as possible and still produce a healthy crop," says Stehly. But the most significant change, says Stehly, has been in technology. He recently added a sensor system to his farms that help him track tree growth, soil moisture, and more. All the information goes into an app, which tells him which areas of the farm need water, and which don't. He says that can help him know what areas to water, when to water and how much water to use."We can skip irrigations. We can skip days," Stehly says. "When you add that up over the course of a year, it's thousands of dollars and hundreds of thousands of gallons of water."The Farm Bureau says the industry can also help solve the climate crisis."The future of ag is the solution to climate change," says Gbeh. "We need to plant more trees. We need to sequester more carbon. Nothing sequesters carbon better than an avocado tree. Here in San Diego, we can be the solution."But, Gbeh says, that can only happen if water costs and regulations are low enough to encourage more planting. 2449

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County is now able to test for novel coronavirus without needing to send samples to the CDC, the Health and Human Services Agency announced Thursday. The County Public Health Lab can now run up to 40 tests at once. The lab is one of dozens certified by the CDC throughout the U.S. “This is great news for San Diego County and will help with our ongoing efforts to contain COVID-19,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “Being able to test locally means that when we have patients under investigation, we can more rapidly remove unneeded restrictions from those without infection. Should someone test positive, we will continue to keep them isolated.”RELATED: First coronavirus case with unknown origin confirmed in Northern CaliforniaPrior to receiving the testing kit, results took several days to return.
